Why I like 10mm, Pictures included...

A "hot .40" is NOT in the same power class as a " hot 10MM "

Think of it as .38Spl and .357Mag ------ with a "hot .38 " who would need a .357Mag

I believe the Holy Grail of SD ballistics is a 200 gr. JHP traveling at 1,000-1,100.

The 45+P can do it, the .44 Mag & Sp. can do it, the 10mm and now the .40 Double Tap can do it too (DoubleTap Ammunition 40 S&W 200 Grain Hornady XTP) with a 5 inch barrel handgun (Beretta 90-2 & Glock 35 come to mind).

The versatility of the 10mm is undeniable but limiting the controversy to SD scenarios, there are better choices for me. The 10mm will keep living in it's niche: versatility.

Since when were jugs filled with water the same as a human chest cavity?

Put some bone, clothing, cartilage, meat in there and try again.

Don't get me wrong, the 10mm is an awesome round, but tests on plastic water jugs do not represent/simulate human tissue/bone.

Well, it always turns into my round vs your round type of thing. The great caliber debate rages on.

Shoot what you are comfortable with and let the other guy shoot what he wants.

I am impressed with the Double Tap ammos, but I don't use them in my Delta Elite because I don't feel like swapping springs. I just use factory Winchester Silvertip for now, but will start reloading my own soon.'

In my 610, I use the 180gr Double Tap, it works like a champ. And I am impressed with the expansion shown here. Would you get that real world, probably not, but I am not going to be the one to offer up my chest cavity for a "real world" test. Will you?

So has anybody heard a release date yet from Glock on a G20SF?

I'm glad the .45 people like the 21SF but I've been waiting and waiting for the SF version of the G20! Come on Glock! I've already got a couple of G20SF mags put away. You can't make the mags and not make the gun!

You know, I was thinking the same thing, but the last time I was trying to do this sort of thing everybody got all up in arms over what I wanted to use as a test medium. I thought that the state made them register their location so that it was easy to volunteer their services for science experiments. Apparently that's capitol murder though, so I've been sticking with water jugs. :(

Seriously though, I know they're just milk jugs. Really all they're definitely good for is comparing one cartridge vs. another (though I can make further guesses, see below) in a similar environment. I can tell you how brand X's 147g offering compares to brand Y's 147g offering when fired into a liquid medium.

Does it tell me what they'd do to a person? No. But it does give me an idea of how one performs against the other.

the 10mm has been the only one I've tested so far that has offered extreme rapidity of expansion coupled with weight retention and adequate penetration. Do I know exactly what it would do in an actual person? Of course not. Through observation however I can tell you that it's doing most of it's expansion in the first 6"-12" of water, and penetrates 24" of water in total, while maintaining most of it's weight. Depending on what conversion rate you use/believe in that equates to expansion in the first 3-4" through 6-8" of bare gelatin with total penetration somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-16" in bare gelatin.

These numbers seem to be backed up by the manufactures results of 14.25" / 1.02" in clothed gelatin.

Yes I have too much time on my hands sometimes.

They're available now depending on your local dealer. Gunbroker.com has several up for auction, if you're ok buying online.

Well crap! Thank you kind sir! I've been complaining about the lack of a 20SF for so long that Glock went and introduced the model without properly notifying me! I'm thrilled to see it. Now it goes from a "why can't this make this model of gun" type of problem to a "how do I afford to buy it" type!

Thanks,

Gregg

I have a Glock 20 10MM I plan on really shooting it a lot this spring& summer . To make my mind up on "Thining the herd" I kinda hate to sell it as its my only 10MM maybe one of the 9MM will go frist.

Sparks 2112, where did you find those Double Tap gelatin tests? I've looked for them before, but I've never been able to find them.

Flight954,
I had a S&W 1006 and didn't care much for it. Could've just been me, but I couldn't shoot it accuratley. I sold it a few years back. I've always wanted a Colt Delta Elite 10mm but don't know if it would shoot any better than the Smith did. I'd try shooting some with the Smith before buying one.

I have a Witness full size steel model in 10mm on order - 15 rounds of whoop butt!

A 200 grain .400" bullet at 1200 fps is a "hot" .357 Mag. The 10mm just beats the .357 with heavy bullets.

Gets a little over 700 ft. pounds kinetic which is nipping on the 41 Mag's heals.

It's a great "do it all" cartridge. Controllable enough for personal protection and gives enough penetration to hunt whitetail out to about 75 yards and is an adequate bear protection peice. Especially if its a 15+1 round capacity model....

There are those who don't understand the need for the 10MM and that's fine. The fact of the matter is, it has as much punch as the .357 and can actually touch the lower end of .41 magnum. It has less felt recoil than either because the action soaks up some. And it can offer a magazine capacity as high as 15.

It would be a great backup caliber in the woods and I intend to carry mine when hiking for black bear and cougar defense. Two legged varmints could and have been a problem hiking around here too.

I hope to have the money in a month or two but I'll probably be looking at the Witness Elite Match rather than Glock.

The only problem I see is finding brass for reloading.
