Why have there been no new handgun designs in almost a hundred years?

The next major step will be ECT (ElectroChemical Thermal) technology. Take a regular case, modify it with an electrode instead of a primer. Fill the case with a chemical which reacts to electricity (although water will do, certain chemicals will do much better) and hit it with a charge. The chemical converts into plasma, which pushes the bullet faster (plasma's expansion velocity is far greater than that of gunpowder)with a constant pressure curve (no spike as with gunpowder). The Navy has actually built this weapon as a cannon but there was talk of using a modified .45 with a power supply you wore on your belt.

ECT allows you to fire a very heavy round at normal velocities or a standard round at extreme velocities. In the case of the .45, it would be possible to fire either 460 grain bullet at 850 fps or a 230 grain round at 1700 fps.

Anyone for a 10 mm 175 gr round at 2300-2400 fps?

There seems to be a problem with this entire thread. A post was added by Gremlin and it didn't show up (Gremlin wasn't the culprit at all, he was the victim in this case. But isn't the name prophetic? ). This was at the same time the entire forum went belly up. It looks like the forum index got messed up at that time by this thread.
