why do you HATE laser sites

I like sites devoted to lasers and their applications. I do like laser sights as well and have had both LaserMax and Crimson Trace sights on handguns. Laser sights on shotguns and derringers seem rather pointless since shot spreads out and derringers are "belly guns."

"they show everyone on the range how much my hands shake

Now there is an honest man! I would guess that this has turned many a shooter against lasers on handguns. I have three CT-equipped handguns, and their red dots do wander. But then I am eighty, and have these weapons strictly for sd/hd. Without my glasses, I cannot even SEE the iron sights. With CT laser grips (and no glasses) I can put shot after shot into the nine ring of a silhouette target at ten yards. I'm good.

Why do you belive folks hate them? Some have no use for them but as an inanimate object with no feelings or intelligence, how can a person hate it?

I got no use for them. Big deal.

The only reason I can think to hate a laser site is that the laser draws a line to the user for somebody with night vision goggles on.

They ain't one Megawatt lasers so what's the big deal?

Actually I use a laser pistol to practice hip shooting. Made it out of a softair gun.

But I know lasers can fail like anything else so I prefer to just keep my skill levels up and not need any lasers to help me aim.

I don't hate them. I've owned two sets and sold them both. I just found them too distracting. Plus, my 642 looks much better with fancy wood grips.

I hate 'em because my cat won't stop chasing them long enough to let me shoot!!

Actually, I have nothing against lasers. I see no purpose to them beyond target practice (or as feline entertainment) but to each their own. I actually like them for practice and am planning to get some CT grips for that purpose.

I just do not see myself looking for a laser on something that I could shoot just as well without.

Then again, I'm not a fan of rail mounted flashlights either

Everybody gets to pick for themselves. There is no 'Right', or 'Best' anything.

Personally I don't hate laser sights. Do you ? I cannot figure why it even matters to you if anyone hates anything.

I like laser sights to practice at the range. When I leave the range, I put regular grips on my J-Frame revolver.

"The guys with the lasers toasted everyone else in attendance with time to first shot on target and overall accuracy. Night sights were second and not a close second. Plain sights were last by a wide margin."

Regarding the Tactics and Training Thread on Mob Riots, a laser sight would be most useful if ever confronted with an angry crazed mob due to time to acquire / reacquire targets.

For all the pooh-poohing of SHTF discussions, the reality is that this is a very real threat that can strike in very unexpected places. Who would have imagined that sitting in an outdoor restaurant in Philadelphia on a quiet night could get you killed? That IS a SHTF situtation!

It is no longer unreasonable to prepare for such cases.

- If completely cornered and your/your family's lives are threatened and there is no other option, then draw.

As concealed carry goes, nothing beats a Sig Sauer P229 with 4-18 round magazines and one in the chamber. Well ok, maybe add a BUG. But a laser is certainly a help in such situations.

I carried with a Streamlight TLR-2 for a while and am currently evaluating a Viridian C5L. My eyesight isn't what it used to be and I find a laser helps, particularly at distances past 15-20 yards.

I zero my lasers parallel to the bore to keep them within 1.5-2 inches of poi out as far as I can practice. This means I don't see the laser unless I look over my sights. It doesn't clutter my sight picture, nor take away from the fundamentals, but it's there if I need it.

They may work great on the range at a stationary target.

My suggestion is the same for any new concept: mount it on a gas blow-back Airsoft gun and try it in some force-on-force scenarios and drills.

See how often you actually can use/see the laser when moving in a dynamic fluid encounter with an actual human, not a cardboard silhouette. This will give a great picture of how it will (or won't) work in real life.

I put the laser sights in the same category as the Taurus Judge: brilliantly marketed to the minimally knowledgeable masses, but of little real use in a defensive situation.

Who hates them?

I think the are a great training aid - whether it's a dry fire exercise or shooting watching that little dot dance over the target gives you an excellent idea of what you are doing right and wrong.

And lasers and laser/light combos can prove very useful in the right conditions.

Laser "Sights"....

I consider them unnecessary "fluff" technology on a defensive pistol...

It's one more thing to rely on that can fail.

Buy a quality gun, buy quality ammo, train, maintain your equipment, remember "front sight", breath properly, and squeeze; is all you need.

Tried one out on my Glock 22..Crimson Trace...Sold it the next day for $20 less. Wasn't for me. No need for one on a handgun.

Almost the same story for me. I tried a friend's pistol that had 'em and didn't see the need. The laser was distracting and not centered.

I bought a used Taurus 85 that had a crimson trace grip with LS but I didn't like the hard plastic grip (bad choice for an ultralight .38 spl. especially when firing +P) and realized the dot was way off center. Didn't feel like trying to center the laser when I didn't even like the feel of the grips so I just got Hogue grips and have been using iron sights on all my pistols and rifles since.

I certainly don't hate them but I really don't see the use for them. More of a tacty-cool thing than a real use item for civilian carry.

"blinded by the light" they sure look real kewl on tv tho.....

My friend has one on his ruger 22 handgun, he shoots apples out of the trees very easy. Its kinda fun but Idont want one.

Kale said, I love lasers. I just hate batteries.

How do you feel about springs, Kale? Personally, I see very little difference between batteries and springs. They are both expendable components, and cheap ones at that.

Jack, when you put it that way... Actually, I have thought of that! And it is a good point. But MTBF (mean time between failure) "should" be far greater for springs than batteries, however I do believe you should stock up on both... That is if you are going to use a laser at all.

Personally, my electronics end up as dead battery holders more often than not. Probably more an issue with my habits than on the usefulness of the tool.

lasers

I have Crimson Trace lasers grips on three handguns and they work great, you can use either the iron sights or the laser and as long as the red dot of the laser is on the target can fire no matter what your head or body position is.

However I was trained to try to never give your position away at night, as civilians however not in a free fire zone with nothing but the enemy outside of our perimeter we have to identify the target using nightvision or white light.

Unfortunately lasers or white light on your handgun or rifle gives away your position and are bullet magnets bringing in incoming rounds, even smoking at night can get your head blown off.
