Because benchrests are dangerous? Why ask why? Is this not the land of the free? Might as well ask why people throw darts, why people play pool, why people drive in races, why people have hot dog eating contests, why do people participate in debates, etc, etc. Because we can. Because we like it.

Looking For A Budget .223

I would prefer that it can use both 5.56 and .223 and that optics can be mounted.

I wonder why he wants to mount optics? Seems he would think that was cheating too.

Well, shucks, if you really want to smugly look down your nose at even offhand rifle shooters, engage in that sport where you not only shoot offhand, but also at flying targets that only give you about a quarter second window of opportunity to get on target, judge how much you need to lead the target to account for the shot's travel time, and you only have a bead on the barrel for a sight.
