Why can't there be more Tamaras

I went into a local gunshop the other day mostly because it was across the street form where I was waiting for a co-worker on a job and I was bored, so I thought I'd go over and see what they had. I looked at a few guns for me, SIGs and Berettas, then I saw some Beretta Tomcats in the next case and asked if I could look at one because I was thinking of getting the wife , whos 5ft tall w/ small weak hands, a smaller gun easier for her to manipulate. His reply was "you shoot me with that it's just gonna piss me off", now while I agree the .32 is no man stopper I thought his comment was a tad riduculous. I considered arguing the point with him but after past experiences with guys in shops who start off with semi-ridiculous statements I decided it wasn't worth the time. Then he points to a 12ga pump and says "this right here is what you need, best home defense weapon there is" without asking about my situation and HELLO I just said the wife was small I doubt she could operate the slider w/o lots of practice and the rooms in our little "Love nest" are sorta small, so if she hesitated a sec. well I'd rather not think about that. And contrary to what some (not the well informed in here) think, nothing is a sure thing manstopper, I had a classmate in drafting who tried to commit suicide w/a 12ga slipped missed and blew his arm off, while on duty in DC one night a call came out for shots fired, on the scene a man stubled out of the alley about 1/3 of his head gone and stood there a few seconds before collapsing yet a secret service agent and press secretary to the united states were both put on the ground by lucky shots from the small calliber (was it a .22 or .32?) handgun of a lunatic.
Sorry about the rant folks I just feel like if you sell cars, learn a little about the cars, if you sell guns "LEARN" about guns, don't just pass on popular myth. The guy only barely redemed himself by also showing me a .38 (I was going to ask about it after the Tomcat, but it was in another case at the other end of the one I was at) but then he blew it again by going back to the 12ga.

sorry forgot to put in there the guy from the alley was shot with a 12GA SHOTGUN!!!! at close range!!!

First, let me say I am no big fan of the 32, and I also think that for home defense, most people, even small framed ones, could handle a 38 or 9mm and be better armed.

That being said, the 32 still has its place, and can certainly do more than just P.O. a bad guy.

Sounds to me like yet another gunstore commando missed a sale. Too bad for him!
 
There may have been a hint of sarcasm in the statement the guy behind the counter made.

That said I think you would be doing your loved one a dis-service by equipping her with something less than most people consider effective.

Lonegunman pretty much nailed it on the head. get her a nice and inexpensive Ruger sp101 or similar "J" frame or "K" frame revolver (please get a pre agreement one) something stainless that should hold up well being trated like my wife treats hers.

It usually sits in a half unzipped rug under the bed collecting dust.

I take it out once a month and blow the dust off of it.

A carbon steel gun might develope a bit of suface rust if it's left unattended or neglected like that.

Having offered up my $.02 enjoy the Tomcat or whatever you should decide to get.
 
I live in Louisville too....and I bet I know exactly which gun shop he's talking about. Don't worry about it their prices are high too!
 
I went through purchasing a pistol for my bride recently.

I took her with me of course and went to three different shops here in Houston. What I notice is that the first guy we spoke with hurried a bit and handed her a semi auto just to prove she could not work the slide. This was for cc and he pushed her towards a J frame .38.

Well, fine, but an Airweight .38 is not a good choice for a woman or child's FIRST SHOOTING experience, and no fun to take to the range.

She shot it okay, but it hurt her hand. We went to two other shops with patient guys and found her a p95 that has a slide that is very easy to rack. She loves it and scored very well with it in her chl class.

She or I will carry the .38 and it's light and concealable and with Hydrashoks I think it will at least ruin the bad guy's day.

I think it's important to find the patient guy and it helps to take the bride with you

Nothing wrong with him trying too provide his cutomer with information that he believed would help you make a better decision (just that he was wrong). But when you told him what you wanted he should have dropped it immediatly and started selling on the good points of the .32.

To your question I don't know why 98% of Gun Shops seem to try as hard as they can to make as little profit as possible and go out of business. If you find out please let me know:(

It's a real shame, too. The owner is nice, but is rarely there. The manager/counter guy is a real...what can I say here, Rich..."sphincter muscle"?

Well like I said I was bored and waiting I won't buy anything from there because they scratched the slide of a stainless gun I took there to have the rear sight changed on, actually there are a couple of shops in town I don't like, but the nicest guy I have dealt with is (I forget his name) Oakwood Guns on Shelbyville rd. Nice guy courteous, lets you look and helps you when you need it, seems knowledgeable. I haven't been to all the shops in the area but , theres also the one on Fern Valley they were nice the one time I went browsing in there. And the people at Biffs have always been nice when I was in there.

Just a few of my experiences, I like shooting at Rays, and it seems the realy stupid guy who used to be there is gone or I'm lucky enough to miss him every time now.:D

And if anyone in Lexington is looking go check out my friend John at Diamondmasters Pawn on third st. he's a realy nice guy (that is if the regulars haven't been driving him crazy all day) Tell him Jack told you about the place (I used to work there).

...I hope that Gonzo_308 doesn't find out that I frequently carry my .25 Jetfire instead of the mighty .32 Tomcat, since it fits better in some pockets than its' bigger brother. Ninety-something percent of the time, it's pulling back-up duty, but there are some occasions where it is the only gun I can tote.

With mouseguns, my plan differs somewhat from the usual: Produce pistol, empty into bad guy and then turn and run, hoping that he is now unwilling or unable to follow. If he does, reload and repeat. Practice frequently with mousegun to ensure competence; the Berettas both have good accuracy for their type of firearm, which makes practice with them enjoyable. As Kleck pointed out, the mousegun frequently has the same effect as any other gun; deterrence. When it is obvious that you have a gun, any gun, and are about to use it on them, all but the craziest tend to seek life elsewhere. Most folks aren't real keen on the idea of being shot with anything. Whether by incapacitating the bad guy enough for me to win a footrace, killing him, or just having him decide to go seek easier prey, I accomplish my mission: Keeping myself an active oxygen consumer.
 
Ask if he'll let you screw the muzzle into his ear and let you touch off a 70-gr. Winchester FMJ.

Then ask him if he thinks he'd be pissed off, or just pissing on himself...

Tamara your a big girl now and entitled to carry whatever you wish, I won't lose sleep over it.

However I think you stated eloquently the confidence you have in a .25 to stop an attacker.

I agree, MOST people will seek easier prey when confronted with any gun.

However, If I feel the NEED to carry, I'm gonna CARRY! I'd hate to think that I was putting myself in a situation where I felt I needed a gun but only had a toy.

I don't carry all the time, I don't want to carry all the time so if and when I do choose to carry I carry somthing that's likely to end a fight quick.

Further along those lines, I don't dress in such a manner that the only thing that would fit on me was a .25, I think I could manage to sneak an Ultra CDP somewhere on my 250lb frame. even in a golf shirt and khaki shorts.
 
Gonzo_308, I think the difference between you and Tamara is probably about 140 pounds or so! :) I suspect what works for you might not work for her... :D

Ah, but see, I don't wait until I think I "need to carry" to do so, anymore than I'd wait until I think I "need my seatbelt" to buckle up.

I always carry. And face it, there are some social occasions where an untucked shirt, a jacket, or a photographer's vest just look out of place. F'rinstance, they clash horribly with a little black dress.

Only marginally less faith than I have in most handgun calibers. My .25 or .32 are usually backing up a .357, 10mm, .44 or .45, and I don't expect any of those to be the Hammer of Thor, either.

Having never received advance notice on any of the occasions when I have needed to draw a gun to protect myself, I do carry all the time. It's the only way to be sure I'll have it when I need it. ;)
