my daily clothing consists of jeans and a t-shirt. my daily ccw consists of a full size 1911. sometimes the shirt bunches up on the mag well when i stand up, and obviously when i bend over, the mag well protrudes from under my shirt. as long as my gun isn't visible who cares about printing? i'm not breaking any laws. i don't announce that i'm carrying but i'm not ashamed of it either.

In some states it is considered brandishing,,,

In Oklahoma concealed means just that,,,
Your weapon must remain concealed at all times.

It depends on the DA of your particular county as to how rigidly that is enforced.

I live in Payne County and the DA here is not too strict,,,
But go 15 miles east over in Creek County,,,
He has instructed the sheriffs to cite.

My question to you is how inna heck did you get a permit in Oceanside, CA?,,,
You must have one of the rear sheriffs who are reasonable,,,
Riverside was impossible when I lived there.

Some consider a bulge in their clothing that hides only the chambering of the gun to be "concealed", as if the word means "there's a cover over the 5" 1911 that guy has on his hip in a Summer Special". I take concealed to mean nobody can tell, even if looking, that I have a gun.

Its not a big deal if your state is okay with open carry. However, some states permit concealed carry only. Its not concealed if its showing now is it?

Printing can be seen as brandishing, and could be illegal in some areas with some LEOs. It comes down to the officer usually.

It really comes down to tactics. You may not care, but how about the bad guy who is looking for challenges to his plan. Without concealment, you become the first target. Are you really ready for a possible sneak attack from behind?

I am a confirmed believer that " concealed means concealed". Surprise is 99% of self defence when using a firearm. JMHO

I am concerned with printing for two reasons.

One, if I am ever need to use or even pull it, I want it to be a complete surprise. If someone is going to assault me knowing I have a gun, they will probably just shoot me to begin with.

Two, even though I have a CCW permit and I can legally carry, I am in certain situations that I can not afford to have it known that I am carrying.

why all the fuss over "printing"?
Because I can't get the computer to see it, and I've got a presentation due in the morning :)

As others have pointed out, there are areas where the gun must be concealed. Printing can be seen as a violation of that.

Additionally, there have been a few places where I don't want anyone to know I have a gun. Most of those are places where I may very well need a gun. If I'm in a suburban WalMart, printing isn't that much of a concern to me. If I'm in certain parts of downtown, I want to be as inconspicuous as possible. It varies.

It's also worth mentioning that legal concealed-carry is still a relatively new phenomenon in many parts of the country. I remember when only a handful of states were shall-issue.

While I am not advocating this in any way, I did know people who chose to risk the legal consequences in favor of being protected. Under those circumstances, it was advisable to keep the weapon as concealed as possible. Some people with valid permits carry in workplaces that forbid it, and again, printing could lead an to unpleasant outcome.

Concealed is Concealed. "Printing" isn't concealed.

And here I am in a state that if your shirt tail covers up PART of your open carry gun, it's legally concealed and you go to the pokey!

Oh, they don't allow any form of concealed carry, have no castle doctrine, don't allow accessible weapons in a vehicle, by statute disqualify storing in a locked glove compartment even! Yet, the "right to own and bear arms" is in our state constitution. But the state supreme court specifically ruled that "to bear arms" does NOT include the right to travel with a loaded or accessible weapon. (duh?)

"Startle the horses.", 9-11-2001, CC licenses-permits...

This subject has been posted here and on other well known firearms/tactics sites. I, for one agree with sworn LEO-tactics instructor, gunwriter Massad Ayoob; "Don't startle the horses."
He based that quote on a early 20th century social norm in New York City. A upper class woman wrote a newspaper column about how & why it's important not to draw attention to yourself or create a scene that could lead to conflict.
"Printing" or being careless with concealed weapons(NOT open carry places) is the sign of a gun owner with poor judgement and/or a reckless mindset.
If I sat on a grand jury or were on a criminal/civil jury, I'd question a gun owner's actions or conduct based on the fact that they can't or won't follow the issue agency's laws or policy. Concealed means you conceal the weapons from view and do not expose or display anything that could clearly show your firearm(s). Sworn LEOs, federal agents, PIs, and EP agents-protection specialsts sometimes print sidearms or holsters too. It's not hard or complex, it just takes awareness & being alert while carrying a loaded firearm.
I'd add that in the post 9-11-2001 world, the "see something, say something" atmosphere could cause a CWP or license holder a lot of problems too.

ps: Some gunwriters and permit holders say showing things like pistol mags, lights, handcuffs, etc isn't a problem either. I'd prefer to conceal those items too. I'd rather keep a violent criminal or terrorist off guard and unprepared to deal with me in a real critical incident. ;)

coug, did you know that you can vote with your feet?

Yeah,:( but I've found it's hard to pack up nearly 300 acres and head off into the sunset.;)

Maybe when the economy picks up, the kid is out of school, etc etc etc.

Some crazy states mandate that the gun remain concealed.

I carry a full sized pistol in a strong side, outside the waistband holster. If I'm in the store or out and about, I'm usually printing pretty bad.

Other than the self appointed PRINT PATROL tards on the interweb, people just don't notice 99.9% of the time. I'm only concern myself with printing when carrying in a prohibited place.

A lot of pros and cons here, but in my humble opinion, if you live in a state that says "Concealed" then it better be concealed. This is the situation in my state. So, I'm very concerned how I look in public, if I am printing or not, etc. Haven't ever challenged the LEO to find out if printing, or possible a mear showing of a weapon would be cause to get a free trip to the hooscow.

Wait for the ethanol fad to pass and the land values out here will collapse again ..... you can trade your 300 acres for a lot more than that.....

I agree with the majority, but instead of bending over, why not simply bend your knees. Best, Lyle
