Who wants to have FUD for a neighbor?

First there's the hot & humid weather, then alligators walking around in my backyard. Now it appears that I'll soon be experiencing a hurricane with winds in the 100+ MPH range if things go as forecasted. While I love my new found gun freedom and other more-civilized laws here in FL as compared to other places, the environmental conditions are getting hard to adjust to.

I will be eligible ("eligible" -- that doesn't mean that I'll actually get it) for a transfer with my company in about 22 months to one of their other data centers that they have across the country. My options are as follows: AZ, CA, FL, GA, NJ, TX.

Taking into account enviromental issues (reasonable temps, not prone to natural disasters, etc.) as well as legal issues (RKBA -- 'nuff said), here is how I see it ...

I'm originally from NJ and while I like the environmental factors, the RKBA issue is about as bad as it can get and if it gets any worse, it'll happen there first so I'm not gonna go back if I can help it. CA doesn't sound too much better, plus there's the earthquake issue to deal with.

GA is right next door to FL so I'm ASSUMING that the weather is going to be more or less the same. If I'm wrong about that point and the gun laws are decent when compared to FL, then GA is a possibility. The same holds true for TX -- I know the guns laws are pretty good but not too sure about the weather. Is it hot & humid over there like it is in southern FL?

That leaves AZ -- northern AZ to be exact. I know that AZ is hot & dry but what's it like near the CO boarder since CO is known for all of it's snow. I believe that the gun laws are pretty good with both open and concealed (with a permit) carry allowed.

Anyone in AZ (and maybe GA or TX) want to convince me to be your neighbor?

Of course, in 22 months I might adjust to FL and may not want to leave.

Hello FUD, Having lived in NAZ for a _long_ time I can tell you THIS is where you want to live! Gary and Colleen Reeder came here from FLA and started "The Pistol Parlor", one of the most civilized places to hang. Nice guns, too. :)

As far as AZ by CO, mostly desert. Navaho rez, too. Try Flagstaff, there's more work there than The Four Corners. Snow till June on a >12K' Mountain, skiing, boating, fishing, big elk, cooler summers than PHX and warmer winters than CO. And there's Ben Avery in PHX, @ >1600 acres it's the largest private shooting range in the country. About a three hr drive from Flag. I could go on and on...
Best,
anodes.

Oh yeah, NO GATORS!

ME ME I want FUD as neighbor but alas I live in Orlando. But I live in place with little chance of Hurricane hitting us. A gated neighborhood no gators near the houses but lots of deer. And some guy in the develop has a range in his backyard

The gun laws are pretty good here in Texas. But the summers are pretty brutal here in Dallas. The further east in Texas the more humid. The further west the dryer.

No state income tax. You can get a CHL. Four seasons (all one week of winter).

Texas is great.

FUD, Yes, the open carry laws are liberal.

The gun laws are simple.
And the CCW laws are straight forward.
Perhaps C.R. Sam can tell you why Prescott is better than Flag? I can't! :p

Hey, I want FUD to be my neighbor... guaranteed to bring some excitement to the sleepy old west side of C-Springs. :)

Sung to a very familiar tune:

"All his friends said,
Hey FUD! Arizona's the place you ought to be!
So he packed up the truck and moved to Prescott Valleee."

(Where's Dennis when you need him?)

FUD -
Where in Georgia is the key. There's a lot of beautiful country there. And if it's an option, Jacksonville right here in Florida is pretty nice, too - usually the huricanes bounce off the southern part of the state and make a beeline for the Carolinas, bypassing us entirely.

(You can be my neighbor any day.)

Anodes -
Aside from looking very cool, what the dickens is that!?

mk86fcc, our data center in FL is in Boca Raton so Jacksonville would be a bit too long of a drive. The data center in GA is in Alpharetta (spelling might be off there) and I would like to keep the commute to under an hour. What's it like in that area and how are the laws?

FUD, I wouldn't mind having you for a neighbor, and computer types are always in demand here. However, if you don't get along with the weather in south or central Florida, you won't like it here on the Gulf Coast one bit, and Dallas-Fort Worth is actually hotter, but you won't need to worry about hurricanes (but then there's those pesky tornados). If you don't mind dry heat, though, Midland-Odessa and San Angelo are really nice areas. I've never lived in the Panhandle so I can't really say about Amarillo or Wichita Falls.

Fud, fleshing out the TX question answered above, TX has any weather you want. Like the man says, it is humid 'round Dallas, worse on east. Here in the Panhandle, we say it is unliveable in Dallas, and humidity hell east of there. On the other hand, if you go to the west, not even as far as El Paso, you will know what a desert is....Central TX, the hill country, is beautiful, not as humid as where you are (I think) and seems to be the "in" place to go. The Panhandle is rolling plains and ranchland and mesquite turning into very flat land as you go west. I won't even get into the mountains out west or the seashore, neither sounds like your bag. The Panhandle is not usually humid, but it does snow 2-4 times a winter. I spent a week in AZ last year, and didn't want to come home. I love that dry desert around Phoenix.

FUD, Alpharetta is just north of Atlanta, in Fulton Co. Alpharetta is a nice part of town - don't confuse North Fulton Co. with Atlanta. Most people I know that worked in Alpharetta buy houses in Forsyth Co. and take Ga. 400 south to work. It's not a bad drive, but it's slower than it used to be (400 used to be called the "Alpharetta Autobahn").

Weather - it's hot, but not as hot as Fla. It's humid, but not as bad as Fla. There is a risk of tornadoes, but I've lived with them all my life, it ain't no big thing. We don't have hurricanes, but sometimes get lots of rain from them, and you're too far north for alligators in any numbers.

Plus, you'll be 30 miles from Kennesaw (every home has to have a gun - it's the law) & Smyrna (Home of Glock).

Georgia ain't that bad.

I'd vote for Alpharetta, and try to live somewhere on Lake Lanier. I think the weather is a LITTLE more tolerable in the summer.

What Anode said plus.

I am at about 5000 ft, bout ten miles out of Prescott, not hot in summer and not cold in winter....usually just a tad of snow at a time that doesn't stay very long. Prescott itself has become nearly overwhelmed by displaced flatlanders who are trying to bring their big city way of life to the country. Some pretty neat places out of the big village tho. I can be at 7,000 ft in around 15 minutes. Antelope (pronghorn) within pistol range of front porch. Javalina, bear, elk, deer, quail, dove, etc. Five or so species of hummingbirds around or in the house. The air is missing most of the city ingredients, can see the 13,000' hill behind Flag from my place, bout 75 miles.....any day cept when real cloud in the way.

I am a little turned off by Sedona cause of the influx of screaming liberals and new wavers. Flagstaff is a tad high for my taste at 7,000 ft and the snow sometimes gets up to a Gyraff's gonies.

If you want to do a recon, will gladly put you up. Need a weeks warning so the nervous sheep have time to do a Fudevac. Have five car garage with bathroom n other useless rooms. (like bedrooms, puter room, library etc.) Fair shop for makin things that go bang or burn. If excitement doesn't come to you we can go trolling for tickets with my APC. Beemerb only bout ten minutes from me and he has one of the more politicaly incorrect power wagons. No gators but a few centipedes big enough that Bob uses thirty cal to kill em.

I have been accused of getting lost often. Over the years I have found a lot of new trails and neat places while takin shortcuts. Got home three days late and forty acres ahead cause of a shortcut from Seligman to Prescott that didn't work like the map promised. Contrary to general opinion, I don't get lost; I just find more interesting roads/trails than most people. Needless to say, I carry at least three days of food and water even when goin down to the village to get a paper.

Y'all come on over, ya heah?

Sam

I vote for Alpharetta, too. I lived in Forsyth Co for several years and found it a nice place (hook up with Charlie Dingler and learn to be a blacksmith like I did).

Dija know they were talking about renaming Canton to Moanin'? Why? Cause it's soooo close to Cumming!!!! :)

Living on Lake Lanier was nice (lots of pretty bikini-clad schoolgirls in the summertime!!!).

Best part is being close to Dahlonega, Helen and Clarkesville. There is a ton of great hunting in that region, plus you have the Earthskills workshops in Unicoi St. Park ever fall and spring. Gotta love that braintan!

Overall, Alpharetta is close to Atlanta and all the urban wonders it holds; but still close enough to the more rural world where any sane person wants to live. Cumming isn't a bad area and is growing by leaps and bounds (I hardly recognize the place anymore). If you're gonna work in one, you might think about living in the other.

Best of luck in your decision.

I'd vote for Flagstaff or Prescott. Been to both very often, and wish like h*ll I could live in either. Good people with sensible heads on their shoulders. Sedona residents have their noses so high in the air you can see their sinuses.

From the choices, I'd opt for AZ.

Colorado, why famous for the snow, is also famous for having the most sunny days of any state. Any... :) That's what the weather guys and the tourism board keep saying, at least.

Sam gets lost but I can drive.I only make right turns instead of lefts once in a while.
Nice area but getting a little crowded for my taste.Too many libs moveing in.See too many Gore bumper stickers which drives my blood pressure up.
Plenty of places to shoot includeing a taped off 400 yarder.
You will be welcome here.

Given FUD's stories of his mis-adventures, I think he'd be a good neighbor to have. You would never have to worry about lightning striking YOUR house!
