Well . . . . I personally do not use WD-40 on guns, although I do have it around as a penetrator for my other rusty junk.

Dad, on the other hand, uses it on everything, and his guns are in great shape. YMMV.

Simple test. Spray a bit of WD-40 into its own cap and let it sit. Check out the yellow goo that is left behind.

Now that's cutting to the chase! And thanks Wuchak for a very informative synopsis of lubricants/protectants uses and methodology.

I checked NO but I have used WD40 as a field expedient cleaner/"blaster" on an AR15 bolt at a match. Not exactly a lube, and I did put a few drops of oil on the bolt after "cleaning". Full clean and lube when I got home.

About says it all!

Someone else made the comment that they've been using the stuff for years and have never had any corrosion. I might mention that I wouldn't dare use it on any gun...even once....and I've never had any corrosion either.

What conclusion are we to draw from that? That if you DON'T use it, all your guns will be protected?

Just a thought.

Thank you,Wuchac,for some digestable info.
A light oil I am familiar with is Texaco Regal. It is rated as a light hydraulic oil and a steam turbine lubricating oil.It is what I an accustomed to using for spindle oil in lathes and grinders.
As I recall from exploring catalogues like Manhattan supply and Graingers, one can get great low temp properties out of synthetic greases, and that is why I have been using a sky blue synthetic grease from Castrol as my gun grease.
Having said that,I just examined a cartridge of OMC Triple Guard grease.I don't know the base, but OMC is Johnson/Evinrude Marine. It may be a reasonable choice. They claim salt water corrosion resistance.
The old standby RIG gun grease (Rust Inhibitive Grease) is formulated for preserving guns.A piece of shearling fleece anointed with some RIG is a trustworthy wipedown, and a rig patch will preserve a clean bore.
Just be sure to wipe it out before shooting.

I use Break Free for internals and Johnson's Paste Wax on outside. Learned lesson the hard way from guns caught in open because of tornado and torrential rains afterwards. CLPd and Waxed guns made it ,others didn't including some that were WD40d. My combination isn't only one that will work, there are lots of good products out there now, WD40 is obsolete and to my mind not effective!
