Who likes big bore snubbies?

What your missing is medium strength handloads, with larger diameter bullets. Also have a 629 Mt gun. You can betcha am not making it a habit to shoot with full bore hunting loads. It excels with medium loads and lighter bullets. If wishing for full bore hunting loads, am more inclined toward a Ruger Blackhawk or Bisley.

The n-frame 44 specials are perfect for a "little extra loading" over the smaller framed 44 specials.

Have a distinct liking for 3 inch pistols, although a longer and heavier barrel may be more suited for hunting or target shooting.

It's like when Ted Nugent is asked "What do you need a (insert name of any firearm here) for?"..... his answer is....."I don't".

It's about the fun.

All guns are fun. Granted, recoil wussies run home to mama after shooting a magnum snubbie. But a lot of us get a real kick out of it.

Plus, in spite of having a bit less power out of a shorter barrel, they are STILL more powerful than a 357, 40, 45, etc.........out of any barrel.

More power is a good thing.

Throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

But gewher asked "what's not to like?" Um, how about a bunch of wasted powder and unnecessary muzzle blast and recoil (not to mention unnecessary cylinder length), when you're talking .45 colt, .44 mag, .41 mag, or 10mm - same goes for .357 mag even though it's not "big bore". I don't get it

Umm, look at my 696 above. It's a stainless steel L-frame in .44 Special. Aka, .44 Magnum -p-, a relatively ancient chambering for wheelguns. So what wasted powder, muzzle blast, and recoil are we talking about?

Ahem...proper snubbies have two inch barrels. ;)

It's not without it's issues, but at least it's not ported, either. :p

IMHO, porting of handgun barrels is an abomination. Especially snubbies.

I know, I know, a lot of guys love their ported handguns......to each his own

44 special 2" I enjoy.

Does anyone know if 41 magnum snubbies are being made anymoe? Got a chief who would like one.
Thanks

Add me to the "I do!" list...

I DO like my .38 spl. since it's an "easy to shoot" handgun with "decent" stopping power (when loaded with 158-gr. Hornady JHP/XTP).

However, I did once get to shoot my boss' Charter Arms .44 spl. 2 1/2" bbl., and I must say - WOW! Does that thing have one HECK of a Bang! to it!

Not something I'd carry, but I'd definitely consider one for a night-stand HD gun.

FirstFreedom,

Besides, if the issue is concealment, the barrel length is most definitely NOT the limiting factor - the size of that huge frame and cylinder sure is though!

When carrying OWB strongside under a covering garment like a vest or jacket, every inch of barrel length is just one more inch that wants to peek out under the hem of your cover garment.

3" seems good for a .45 acp or .44 spec in a smallish gun, but not beyond those bigbores. What gives - what the heck am I missing? It is just sheer enjoyment of the massive muzzle flash and recoil that serves no useful purpose other than the entertainment value of fireworks and letting you know you're alive by hurting your hands or what?

Chrono .44 Spl and .44 Mag out of a 3" gun sometime and see for yourself that there is still quite a bit of difference in velocity between the two calibers. (BTW, you should, by rights, have lumped .45 Colt in with .45 ACP and .44 Spl, as it's also a low-pressure cartridge that doesn't suffer much or gain much from bbl length variations, at least in its standard SAAMI-spec form.)

...well, let's see...just recently started "playing with" a 325 PD...also have a 696 and a three-inch 629...and BTW, do "Mountain Guns" count???...if so....mikey357

So, has anybody chrono'd this here snubbie? I don't know if a 3" barrel with 1" comp counts as a "snubbie" but it looks the part parked in front of that X-Frame.

I'd be curious as to how much is given up over an 8-3/8" example of the same. My revolver collection is very sparse - consisting, as it does, of only a singular model 29. Granted, "practical" is not a priority in this household...
