I was just wondering. After reading the "guns you take to the range" post i couldnt help but notice 99% of you own 22's.

My question is, what type of 22 do you own and whats its purpose?

I'll go 1st !

I just bought a ruger 22/45 pistol after getting rid of my MKII jam-o-matic. The 22/45 is a great shooter. So i took the sights off of it and bought a simmons holo-scope. Ive been practicing for plate shooting competetions. I also own a marlin 22 auto with a bushnell 9 power scope for bullseye shooting.

I really love the 22's because they are fun and i can shoot 1/2 a day for $20.

So, what 22 do "you" shoot and whats its purpose? target, hunting, comp?

Hello. I use my S&W M41 for pure bullseye shooting. It reenforces proper basics that must be built upon. Whenever my groups begin to suffer with other weapons or in other types of handgun shooting, ie "practical", I go back to pure bullseye shooting with several guns and the M41 is always in that "several." Best.

.22s are my favorite. My basic hunting cartridge (for small game) and my basic practice cartridge (with a .22 conversion unit for my .45)

Hunting - Nylon 66 and/or Ruger Mark I bull barrel. If I'm really serious and the shots may be tough I go with a Ruger 77/22 with a Leopold 2X7.

i have a browning buckmark, which serves many purposes. first, it's great to help me keep good habits and form. after shooting it, my groups are always much tighter. second, i enjoy taking my girlfriend to the range and it's perfect for her to shoot (she's more accurate than i am!). third, it's a great gun to teach beginners. the recoil doesn't turn them away and allows them to develop good basic skills. whenever i take someone new to shooting to the range, i always start them off with the .22 and then move them up to larger calibers if they feel they're up to it. if you don't have a .22, it's one of the best investments you can make. i think it's just as fun to shoot as any other gun i've tried, and it costs next to nothing to purchase ammo.

My first firearm was an original Armalite (not ArmaLite) AR7 Explorer. Contrary to the assertions of "From Russia With Love", the AR7 is a .22 LR rifle and is a great little plinker.

I have three .22 LR firearms -- they're great for having fun on the range and teaching newbies!

I too have a 22/45 for target practice. It does help re-enforce the basics. Also I use it to teach newbies with their first time out on the range. Less recoil less fear.

I generally use a Ruger MarkII target and/or a Ruger single six. I shoot at 75 feet or more and find them to be accurate. I have a 9mm hand cannon which is prohibitively expensive to shoot. I originally bought the MarkII because it had the same recoil characteristics as a Beretta 92 because transmission of force through the action movement. I've found both the pistols to be the most enjoyable I've ever had to shoot for people who really like pistols.

I believe you just answered your own question. :)

I own 4 .22 rifles and 3 .22 pistols, they probably get fired more than all my other guns combined. Why? As you said...THEY'RE FUN!

Gun: Ruger MkII Competition Bull Barrel with 2X Tasco Scope and Hogue wraparound rubber grips. My beautiful wife bought it for me last Christmas.

Uses: Practice, practice, practice. Point shooting, weak hand shooting, one-hand shooting, distance shooting, scope/no scope. Plinking, newbies, "amaze your friends."

Ammo: From high-velocity (Winchester) to supersonic (CCI Blazer, Aguila Hyper velocity).

I have been shooting mostly .22s the last few range trips. Cheap, easy on the ears and hands, good for re-learning basic techniques. Smaller holes make it easier to see if I erred in my aim.

I still like .45acp for plinking, but my hands get tired of recoil after 150-200 rounds. With 22, I did burn up about 600 on the last range trip without breaking the bank or tiring my muscles. Got better at trigger control, too. Hope to shoot some with an air gun soon, too...

I bought my wife and myself a pair of blued 22/45's with consecutive serial numbers. (Kind of his and hers). Great shooting, reliable and cheap. Just plain fun. We can go to the range and burn up a lot fo ammo and not have to take out a second mortage.

I also have a 10/22, a super single six in stainless and a marlin 39AS.

We shoot more 22 than anything else. It is fun to shoot and doesn't wear you out like a lot of the big center fire calibers.

I forgot some High Standards (dishonor!) and a couple of Berettas. Some of these are strictly retired 'white glove' pieces, like the NIB Colt Diamondback. Most are shooters, and most of my shooting is done with rimfires.

I started out on a .22 rifle when I was young. My very first firearm was a Ruger 10/22. It helped me develope good shooting skills due to it's low cost, cheap ammo and light recoil. I think that a .22 is a great firearm for anyone starting out in the shooting sports.

Aye, yi, yi, tambien! I think we have a winner!

S_R makes my measly 22 collection look pitiful:
Ruger Mk II 5.5" bull
Ruger 10/22T with Volq. match hammer/sear
Marlin 39AS

Like a lot of folks here, one of those almost always makes it to my range sessions.

I like to shoot my Phoenix HP22 when my shooting begins to suffer with my other handguns. With the 2 1/2 barrel you have to do everything right if you're going to hit anything. Also it's a relief not to have to worry about chasing brass. If I can hit with this pistol I'll have no problems with the others and if I miss I know it's my fault since the HP22 is capable of exceptional accuracy for such a small package. regards, birdman

I shoot several .22 rifles, but my favorite pistol is my Ruger 22/45 bull barrel with adjustable target sights. I've got ten 10 round mags for it, load'em up and then I just have Fun, shoot good, and can still afford to eat on the way home :).
Fun, accurate, cheap!
