Who has bought a Bulldog .44 recently?

Deputy276, if you aren't aware, the fellow that answered your e-mail also just happens to own the company. If you ever have to call them you'll likely speak to Dee, his wife.

That was also a factor when I decided to go with a Charter.

Vegas Plinker-:)
Those two make a great pair of "Bacon-Makers" ! The thumbhole Mini-30 is one sweet shooter, and the Charter is a real fine "Finish'em" revolver.

Timely thread. Gun Tests July issue has a heads up comparison of the CA Bulldog, and the 2" barreled Taurus 44 Spcl revolver. they gave both pretty good ratings with the Charter receiving an A-, and due to it being as they said "A small gun with huge grips" the Taurus got a B-
The thing that they found negative was that with factory rounds both had somewhat anemic performance with velocities in the 675 fps range. However, hot handloads brought the performance up a couple hundred fps. They did advise against a steady diet of hot loads in either gun.

Gun Tests was off with that statement about velocities. The .44 Special was NEVER meant to be a high velocity round. It was always meant to be slow and big...like a .45 Colt. Trying to push it to higher velocities is a waste of effort and just makes for excessive and premature wear on the gun. A Speer Gold Dot 200 grain HP is more than adequate to get the job done.
If you want hyper velocity, then you go with the .44 Magnum. Trying to make a magnum out of a Special is counter productive. The Bulldog would be VERY uncomfortable to shoot and follow-up shots would be nearly impossible.

Yep, big and slow, is the way to go just like the .45 Colt. What bullet you pick is a personal thing. I like my 240g SWCs in mine with a standard load of Unique under them.

Speaking of cartridge choice, anyone have any experience with the Winchester Silvertip for .44 Special? I tend to use Speed God Dots exclusively, but wondered if the Silvertip offered any type of performance gain.

I finished a 300 pound hog with a head shot with a Silver Tip and it did not perforate the head but it did come very close. When we slaughtered the hog out the bullet had passed through the skull, through the brain and slammed into the other side of the skull breaking it and the recovered slug was .82diameter. It is a accurate round. It has more blast and report then the Speer 200's though. I like the Silver Tip though and it was my favorite .44 Special load followed close by the Hornady XTP.

Thanks for the feedback Will!

fortkevin2: Please post pictures and let us know how you like it. I know when I hold mine it instantly produces a SEG. :D

Will do. It's a FTF sale(legal with CHP of course) and meeting him in about an hour.

Anyone know of a good IWB holster for these? What about a nice pair of wood/boot style grips?

Sent from an HTC mobile device....

Eagle makes wooden boot grips.

I use a Universal Clip Draw on mine.

Here it is. Got it with the holster and the two boxes of ammo pictured for $330. Not bad I don't think. Have a die set on the way and already casted some bullets up for it. Should be sub 10 cents a shot for reloads. :D

Kevin: Looks AWESOME! I suggest you take it out and shoot it before buying any grips. I shot my Bulldog and Pitbull and decided the grips were too thin and the rubber too hard for me. Especially in the Pitbull with the hotter .40 S&W ammo. I bought two pair of Pachmayr gripper grips. They have softer rubber and feel much better compared to the factory rubber grips. I hope to get out to the range this weekend to test out the Pitbull with 180 grain ammo.

willmc33: Reading my mind concerning getting another one. But Charter is bringing the Pitbull out in 9MM and .45ACP this year. I will wait (impatiently) for their arrival.:)

A .44 Special and .45acp are pretty close. The advantage of being able to steadily find ammo for it and to load up some HST's in the .45acp snubbie will be tempting though. There is a pawn shop here with a Chater Arms Bulldog with the bobbed hammer and CT laser grips in good condition for $300.00 O.T.D so I might grab that and give one of the .45acp varieties a squeeze too.

Bulldog

I just ordered myself a new one and love it. It fits my hand well and is very light. I have had to use Charter's customer service one time on a gun I ordered for a customer and it was fixed promptly.
