Who else is a Left-handed... and what do you shoot?

I was wondering what other Southpaws like me are shooting in Semi-auto these days.

While I sure like 1911's, I found that any not rigged for total ambidex mode are pretty much useless for a leftie. I picked up a Ruger KP95 DC (.9 mm) when they first came out, and it's worked well since there's no 'right-thumb' safety to fuss with and the de-cocker is ambi from the factory. Like any other leftie however, I still have to work around the slide release that's set up for the right handed shooter.

I'm thinking about picking up another semi-auto down the road (perhaps in a .40 S&W) and wondered what are other left-handers are happy with and that work well.

Thanks for any input.
John

1911's and a Glock. Toss an ambi thumb saftey on the 1911 and just yank that Glock from the holster.

I'm a southpaw as well but shoot mainly right; but I have no problems with Kimber, Glock (27, 22c, 20), Walther P99 or Sigs 229,239 in left hand mode. Ejection is not an issue and I use the rack-the-slide method for clearing malfunctions or after putting in a new magazine. My Kimber is a Ultra CDP and is ambidextrous, the others have only deckocking levers and no safety that needs to be released prior to firing.

I also shoot mostly 1911s and with an ambi safety, I find I'm really not hindered at all compared to a righty. In fact there are some who will tell you the mag release on the 1911 is faster for a lefty's index finger than a righty's thumb, me being one of those some;)

Hk P7M8,Glock, Walther P99 all left friendly. Have ambi-safeties on my 1911's, struggle owning a Sig. I haven't shot one but the CZ 85b is ambidexterous. I find the trigger finger much faster than the thumb for mag release, probably from starting on a 1911.

4 non-ambi 1911's, an ambi P-35, and Kahr MK-40. The 1911's are easy to disengage safety with thumb before moving it to opposite side of backstrap. I also carry right side and shoot left eye. MK-40 is point and shoot simplicity.

As you can see from my siganture, I've had several guns, all ambi (except, for the most part, the USP9). The P7 is probably the best for lefties as long as your hand is strong enough to hold the cocking lever down. The P99 isn't bad, the only thing that I can't reach with my left is the decocker - not a big deal.

To release the slide, I just pull back on it and let it go. For a lefty, the Euro mag releases do work fairly well - my Sig P230 has it, and it's not bad to use - but not as well as the American type. Just hold the gun in your left and release the mag with your right.

To release the slide after the last round lock-open: I insert the fresh mag and just pull back on the slide with my right and let it go.

These guns are all lefty-friendly.

So sorry for the quadruple post.:o My DSL is running really bad tonight.

I keep trying to delete them but I get an error message telling me that I'm not logged in, but the rest of the site tells me that I am logged in.

At least my post count went up a little. :)

You should do a search on lefty posts as I recall there have been quite a few with good advice.

I personally shoot everything lefty.
Been mastering the SIG way recently, and find that SIGs are pretty well suited once you get some practice decocking with the side of your left trigger finger. I personally carry a Kahr K9 on a regular basis and feel it's the most ambidextrous pistol I own. Also the HK USP series set up with an ambi safety and 1911s with the ambi feature work really well. I hear the CZ85 is good too.

Hope you find something that 'fits'.

I'm a southpaw, but learned to shoot originally on right handed guns. Ambidextrous controls were virtually non-existent when I first started 30+ years ago. Sooo...

Almost everything I own and shoot is right handed. The exception is my BHP and Walther P88. The BHP has an ambi-safety and the Walther P88 is totally ambidextrous.

My regular CCW's are: Browning HP in winter months and in dress clothes; Star Firestar Plus in casual clothes and Glock 26 in summer.

My Glock has been modified with a an extended mag release and extended slide release. Both mods my make it easier to operate with my left hand.

As I said earlier, my BHP has and ambi safety.

My Star is unmodified and totally stock.

I favor the Beretta 92 Elite 2 and any Glock. I'm not a big fan of the USP, haven't tried the p7 (yet), Walther p99 are good but too thin for my taste. Personally I dislike the 1911. Same thing goes for Sigs.

I learned to shoot SIG's before other handguns (hence the name), and adapted to the right-handed (left side) decocker and slide release. However, I wouldn't recommend a newbie lefty picking SIG. There are many other guns that are either left friendly or even made for a lefty.

Depending on budget, you may want to consider a H&K USP or USPc in Variant 2 or 4 (w or w/o manual safety). The gun is MADE for left-handed shooters. I have a USPc 9mm in Variant 2 and really like it. I would like it even more if I hadn't learned to do everything bass ackwards with the SIG's so many years before. All-in-all, it's the best left-handers gun I've found so far (I own 17 handguns).

Farther down the food chain, Glocks are pretty much either hand, the Beretta 92 is easy for us lefties too.

The 1911 is a great lefty design - better for lefties, than righties. Get one with an ambi, or get an ambi for the one you have. The only person I know with an ambi mag release is right-handed; they want the same advantage that lefties have. Same with the slide stop - try to reach it with your right thumb, then try to reach it with your left trigger finger. Also, reduced chance of AD if your trigger finger is on the mag release and/or slide stop during reloads.

Over the past 5 years I have carried a Beretta 92 FS, a Glock 26, Glock 19, a Sig 229, and a Taurus 605. For the semi-autos, the Glock is by far the most lefty-friendly, but the Sig is a close second. Since the 92, I have avoided any pistols with a manual safety.

Southpaw

I'm a lefty and I shoot a CZ 85 Combat. I find it easier to use my left forefinger for the slide release, my left middle finger for the mag release (on the right side of the gun) and my left thumb for the safety. I don't use the ambidextrous mag release, even though I bought the gun with that in mind.

Thought you'd like to know.

Ta,
