Who carries a sidearm while hunting?

the .44 mag is min for out in the wilderness. those carrying .9mm, 45acp, 40s&w are living a lie. keep those for the mall or wal mart. fact.

for the pansies who think a .44 mag is too heavy, common sense says suspenders. get some....common sense and suspenders.

i carry my manly s&w model 29 .44 mag while hunting/boating for defense from bear, cougar, ect and for when im walking to and from the deer stand with my scoped 30-06 on my back and i jump a deer or hog.

leave the pansy handguns at home with the wife guys.

Cajun, got lots of grizzlys and cougers over there in Louisiana? The only cougers I've ever heard of anywhere near LA are the 2 legged ones that hang out on Burbon St. :D

actually yes. i have heard a cougar at night at a camp in the swamp. i have seen a cougar on a game reserve(higher land) while frogging. also, the game reserve check in warns that a big hog and black bear look the same when on four feet. and to my surprise a large black bear was hit and killed by a car near my home. a week later another large black bear was hit by a car then killed by a state trooper. not far from where i live and hunt, patterson, la and franklin, la are full of black bears. residents out there have problems with them eating their garbage.

A 357 mag would be plenty for all of the animals you named, imo a 44mag would be for places that have moose or grizzly, so carry what you want but all that "pansie" talk sounds like someone is overcompensating to me!

I just bought a PT145 yesterday with the plan to carry it while hunting. I also bowhunt and muzzleloader hunt so it's comfort knowing I'll have something handy just in case.

I don't know but I just don't trust coyotes, they're not like foxes I get nervous when one crosses my path while bowhunting. We also have plenty of rabid raccoons and stray dogs running around.

And then you have the two legged predators....Ever come out of the woods to find people milling close to your vehicle? For me it's always been a little uncomfortable.

I had a big problem with Black Bears eating my garbage, as well (near Pensacola Florida).

Instead of a big, manly ".44 mag", I got a few cases of beer and a snapping turtle. Have you ever seen how angry a bear gets, when it gets its nose bitten by a snapping turtle? Have you seen how fast it runs away, when it gets bitten a second time? I never stopped drinking beer on my porch. The turtle got a light snack. And the bear will be missing two chunks of its nose for the rest of its life.

The other bears didn't seem to enjoy the hamburger and Fire Oil concoction I left for them in the trash. ("Fire Oil" being the oil extracted from Red Habanero chilis - and containing almost all of the capsaicin in the chili.) Watching a bear try to "sneeze" that burning sensation out of its mouth is about as funny as it gets.

There was no reason to kill the bears. I gave them a very good reason to not want to come back, instead of killing them out of boredom or wanting to make myself feel superior. Even if I had a reason to kill them... I would have done it with a .380 Auto. They're black bears, not zombies.

I carry a pistol, while hunting, for the reasons listed in my previous post. While camping, I tailor my needs to two-legged predators.

I carry at all times, hunting or not. Main reason for hunting mainly squirrel or coon I carry a bolt action single shot .22 and after coming across a couple pot fields/meth labs that one shot just isn't enough. The only critters I have to worry about is the occasional snake, wild dog or bobcat. However there have been a few mountain lion sighting around here.

When I hunt I carry a side arm. Usualy a large bore revolver. A few times when bow huntiing I was treed by a hog. I would have traded my expensive archery gear for a cheap .357 mag at that moment. Nothing helps you climb a tree faster than knowing if the pig knocks you down it will leteraly tear your living guts out.
Also as some one else mentioned about pot fields, and drug labs. Also in this area 2 men murdered an animal control officer becasue they thought he saw them picking up a tank of anhydrous amonia, that some one had dropped there for them.
