Who can explain S & W's model numbering system?

I know there has to be some form of system to make their number system explainable, but I can't figure it out.

Did somebody at Smith & Wesson tell you there is an explanation for their system?:p :D

re: the guys 'Supica and Nahas', that Mr. Irwin mentioned, wrote a book titled the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson".
It includes lists of their numbering systems as well as explanations of their lettering systems. I have their book open before me now...just happened to have picked it up at the local library today.
Although I couldn't find the prefix for my S&W
Model 38  , perhaps you'll have better luck.

Steelworker,

The Smith & Wesson Model 38 is a revolver, the Bodyguard Airweight.

If you have a semi-auto marked 38, it's a mismarking.

Hi Mike,
I was referring to my Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight .38 Spec.
The serial range prefix stamped on mine is "BSP" followed by four numbers. Because it is not marked "Airweight" on the barrel, I believe it must have been produced in 1993, when that marking was deleted.
I'm not sure what I mentioned in my earlier post that made you think I was referring to a semi-auto pistol...
It's a fine carry weapon.

Steelworker,

"I'm not sure what in my earlier post..."

Well, you posted in a thread talking about interpreting the model numbers on S&W's semi-autos, and in a thread on the semi-auto board.

That's usually a pretty good indication that someone has a semi-auto.

I'm thinking your 38 was made sometime late 1994, but I'm not certain about that.

You and I both have the 1st edition, the recently released 2nd edition of "The Standard Catalog" has serial number information for the bulk of the 1990s.

hey mike , your the first person who I actually saw figuring this S&W numbering system out , now anything on figuring out women??? :D

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the heads-up on the 2nd edition... I'll check it out to see if there's more info on my mod 38.
And you're absolutely right, I do have a semi-auto! But it's a Para:)

mike me too , hmmm i think we both spent too much time figuring out number systems ... :D and if you did figure them out you'd be a millionare !!
