Which U.S. Policies irk you?

I'm trying to gather ideas for a research paper I am writing for one of my classes. Basically I'm trying to find out if certain policies dissapoint, enrage, or baffle different groups of people and why.
Now these can be domestic or foreign policies that our Governmnet adheres too, but they must be current.
This is not meant to be inflamatory in any way, I'm just looking for some thoughts and ideas from peers who's opinions i respect, mostly :p

Thanks

this is a joke right?
there are so many, why not start with our stance towards Saudi Arabia. You could probably right a freaking book on this subject. As a bonus numerous administrations have failed in regards to Saudi Arabia(well in my eyes).

Are you making a distinction between policies, laws, agendas, etc.? Or is this simply, "the government engages in activity X, and that irks me."

If so, I'm not too thrilled with the Iraq war, the Patriot Act, or the cronyism endemic to the Bush administration, but those are pretty broad, and I'm not sure that the latter is a policy, more just an annoying, irksome activity.

Also, are you limiting this to specific political administrations (Bush administration, Clinton administration, etc.), or general policies undertaken over time by government agencies, i.e., the IRS? I'm assuming that you mean the Federal government, of course.

Current policies enacted or under way by any branch of the federal government domestic or foreign.

Thanks for the replies so far :)

The inconstancy of most policies...

i.e., this is my enemy so he is my friend????

Arabia, China, Columbia, France...

Murder in the "bag" is different from murder in the night????

Abortion vs. a knifing in the alley...

Anti-gun vs. early release of convicts...

5 years to life for child molesting vs. 7 years average for murder...

"When guns are outlawed... only outlaws will have guns."

Inconsistancy is a "civilized" term for dishonesty. :(

Here are a few.

Drug war - Just look at how many people are in jail for pot. A drug that is less harmfull than tobacco. I don't know the right solution, but the way wea re doing it is just stupid.

NFA act of 1934

Full auto ban of 1986.

Not investing more money toward renewable energy sources.

Illegal Immigration

/hope this helps

The constant attempts to establish a nanny state.

Over regulation of business.

Gun control being touted as "crime control."

The jury selection process in general.

The Judiciary legislating from the bench.

No line item veto for the President.

The US tax code. (Get Congress out of the tax writing biz if you want to get the money out of politics)

The fact that though many elderly and disabled citizens struggle to survive. Even though they have worked and been productive for many years.
Many of these will never regain even a small part of the many thosands they have paid in taxes over their working lives.
However their counterparts who have NEVER contributed to our economy or paid any taxes fare very well.

I think I have some sentiments similar to mtn. man's. I dislike government welfare programs which encourage fraudulent disability claims at the expense of the truly disabled. I dislike the government having abandoned the chronic severely mentally ill population through deinstitutionalization under the guise of patient rights. I dislike the gutting of the public health system which has occurred in the 20+/- years since lobbyists blocked efforts to contain the HIV/AIDS epidemic until it was out of control.

I also dislike programs which disenfranchise small farmers, small business and small industry in favor of the interests of multinational conglomerate corporations.

That is a pretty good start.

Edited to add that I really dislike the 'free trade' agreements which have allowed all our industry to go overseas. I read today that next year US chemical manufacturers will build 1 new plant but the Chinese will build 50.

I am a little irked at the idea that even with the law passed last year giving the LEO carrying right in all 50 states, which is a good law, don't get me wrong. There is no procedure/legal protection for a member of the military transfering to a different state. I am transferring from VA to NY, and there is no federal protection for my legally owned firearms. I have to try to get a permit in NY. Which isn't as hard for me as some, since I am a resident of NY. But I have to do stuff like interviews with the judge from my home county, through which I applied for the permit, while I am still in VA. I can't have the guns in NY without the permit. It just all seems backwards.

Overuse of the Commerce Clause.

Patriot Act (worst name ever for that kind of legislation, BTW)

Negative stance towards the Minutemen while doing nothing else to stop the problem (yet they support Neighborhood Watch, which is the exact same thing).

Congressional pork.

Opposition to expanding military which would lessen impact on Reserves.

Emphasis of technology over boots on the ground at DOD.

Election 'reform' that silences opposition prior to elections when it needs to be heard.

Over-reliance on oil vs. nuclear/renewable resource power for powering commmunities.

Lack of standards at BATFE.

Decline in domestic industrial capacity for national defense goods.

Import ban on 'non-sporting' firearms.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. There are plenty more, but some are state issues and some I need to be reminded of to remember.

There are a lot of policies I don't like. Here are a few:

1) The inability of the Federal Government to balance a budget and reduce our national debt.

2) The lack of authority on the part of states to regulate their own abortion laws.

3) Our lax illegal immigrant policies.

4) The over-complicated tax system.

The goverment really doesnt allow you to do what you want with your child when it comes to education. Especially with how schools are now a days (drugs, sex and other things).

Regardless of how good of a parent you are your child can and will most likley still do the above if he hangs out with the wrong crowd.

Another thing that sorta ticks me off is the gun laws. I believe there shoot be just FEDERAL laws and not State Laws. This would make things easier and more mainstream.

What else ......

Illegal Immigration (I wont start with this because sensop always closes them). I can list many more but they dont tick me off nearly as bad.
