there was a nice "blurb" on Castle yesterday

Castle: they have gun call the police
Beckett: for what? guns on their own property? that is their constitutional right

At first I didn't get why the Wire wasn't on the list. best cop show ever IMO

but than I read the trivia that apart from one cop with a negligent discharge(actually 3 different ones) the police officers never actually fire their guns, very seldom even draw them.

I for one atleast hope that that is the case for most policeofficers, and the reality? so realistic by default?

Wasn't it Barney Fife who only was allowed to carry one bullet?

My all-time favorite crime show is The Wire. The focus, of course, was not shootouts. It may not follow police procedure accurately -- I'm not an officer, so I wouldn't know -- but it was well-acted.

A cable station has been rerunning Miami Vice and while nothing they do could remotely follow real police procedure, it sure is a trip in the WABAC machine. Watching the two female officers heading to a crime or chasing bad guys in long skirts and heels is hilarious, as are the clothes Crockett wears and the sawed-off shotgun Tubbs carries, in violation, I'm sure, of the rules of every police department in the country.

In one of the episodes I watched last week, one of the secondary characters is chasing a baddie into a building. He fires one round and the gun goes to slide lock while he continues firing. Kudos to the sound effects tech ...

My thought too when I first saw the list.

I think you nail it with your closing sentence: if we are talking about realism related to guns, then it should feature as, based on what people here have written or what I have read/heard from actual LEOs, most have very seldom had to draw, let alone fire, their weapons.
