Which Sig is the perfect platform for the .357 SIG?

If I'm going to buy a .357 Sig caliber weapon, I'm going to buy a Sig pistol. Is the Sig 226, 229, or the SigPro the better platform? Or did I miss one?

I've got three nice compacts-- HK USP40c, 9mm Walther P99, and a Beretta Cougar .45-- and a Walther PPK for light concealment, so size isn't really an issue here. I've got a plenty of full size pistols as well--I just want to have the weapon that shoots the .357Sig cartridge most accurately, reliably, and is the most enjoyable to shoot. Which Sig would it be? (And don't say a Glock... This one's going to be a Sig.)

Thanks for your ideas!

the best platform for 357SIG is the P229 Sport. It is factory tuned, target sights, target trigger, All stainless construction and nice compensator.

Hmm, funny, most of the guys that shoot them seem to like the SIG Pro's. Of course, I don't hear all good things about TJ's, so I am not inclined to take his word as gospel. Basically, the SIG Pro will shoot along sige the classics for less dough. Whine about the design if you must. . .

Gremlin,
One bad thing about Sigs, it is indeed difficult to choose which model.
I have a P229 & P239 in .357 Sig caliber. Both are of high quality and reliability. Never had a FTF with either using factory ammo or my reloads. I would give the nod to the P229 for accuracy and tighter groups. The trade off is a higher price tag.
The P239 makes a nice carry piece if you are comforable with 7 round mags. It does shoot well but has a bit more kick than the P229. If the choice is a P239 install a set of Houge Monogrips. They help with control and felt recoil.
No doubt whichever model you choose you will be pleased. Enjoy the seach.

I agree with the quickad, the P229 Sport. You say you already have full size and compact pistols, this isn't really for concealed carry, but for shooting. The Sport is the way to go. It is a little heavy and a little long for my taste as a CCW, but it is a tack driver on the range. You can even get replacement barrels from BarSto and convert it to .40 S&W or 9mm with the purchase of P228 9mm mags. That sweet trigger is standard as well. I don't know what is different, but I am going to have my smith dig into my Sport in the spring to see if he can make my other SIG's triggers like the Sport's.

What good/bad things have you heard about TJ's. I'm planning on having him do a trigger job on my P226 9mm.

An interesting note is that well-known SIG custom-smith, TJ Custom Gunworks, hates the new polymer SIGs:

"the SigPro = JUNK (some brain storm engineer thought it was smarter to complicate the mechanism like the HK USP rather than stay with the excellent design of the other Sig line.)"

Name any gun, you will find at least one expert or another who says it's junk. Besides, why is emulating the HK USP a bad thing? They're supposed to be excellent guns.

For the most part, I hear good things about TJ's. However, I have also heard from a couple of guys who had their guns switched to full auto. So, lots of happy customers, 2 that had problems that I know of. TJ is probably not too bad as far as smiths, but no one is perfect.

I own both guns. The SIG P226 on one end, and the SigPro 2340 on the other. Both are very reliable and accurate. And both have good feel and triggers, but the durablity edge "might" favor the SigPro. SigPro setbacks, not much. Breakdown is a tad more complex the FIRST FEW TIMES, and no preban mags available if that matters to you. I agree the ultimate SIG 357 would be the P229-Sport. Even Massad said the 357 Pro was MORE accurate than the 357 P229 when he compared them. Say what you want about the Pro, but "IMO" it's as good as my P226. I'm not saying the SigPro is "better" than the comparable standard P229, but for $200 less the SigPro's hard to fault. Bob.

Let me further the 229 sport recommendation. Great gun, exceptional trigger and very, very accurate. This is all I can add other then this is one of my really "fun" guns!

I'm looking long and hard at the P226 in .357 Sig. It's not going to be my carry gun, it's going to be my .357 semi-auto range gun. I've owned .357 Smith, Ruger, and Rossi revolvers and have never been a big fan of the muzzle blast and recoil of the magnum loads--my ported Rossi snubbie used to look like the Space Shuttle taking off.

I'm thinking that given the 40,000 pressure rating of the .357 Sig ammo, the extra barrel length and weight of the P226 might make the round more enjoyable to fire. I've noticed that my little P225 9mm recoils quite a bit more than my full size CZ 75 or my Walther P99 when I'm shooting hot loads, so I'm thinking that the P229 would probably be more of a hand full than the full size P226.

Am I missing something here? Is there an inherent accuracy difference or a design flaw or trigger pull or whatever between the P226 and the P229?

Thanks for all the replies...

I'd really like to see the 225 chambered in .357 Sig.

I HATE the feel of the 239. All boxy, blocky, and pretty much wrong for me.

The .357 Sig in a package the size of the 232 would be very nice, as well, but would be a handful to shoot.

All in all, though, if I get a .357 Sig, I'm probably going to get it in a Kahr.

Buy the SIG P229...

There isn't a finer out-of-the-box combat pistol available; and it was specifically designed for higher pressure cartridges like the .40 Liberty and the .357 SIG.

You don't need the extra weight and expense of the P229S [although it is a *nice* pistol]...my P229 is comfortable to shoot with either cartridge.

What I really like about the P229/.357 SIG combo is the inherent accuracy...it is outstanding.

The full auto thing came from Actions by T (Teddy Jacobson). Both Teddy and TJ are outrageously priced. They're both conceited, and they both talk crap about other smiths. I'd send the gun off to Mark Graham at Arizona Response Systems and save a whole bunch of money.

Kahr in .357? Do they make such a thing? I haven't heard of one before, and I just checked their website and it was not listed there.

Slojim,

The .357 Sig Kahr uses the K40 with a replacement barrel. I THINK that the barrels is available from Bar-Sto, but I'm not 100% certain about that. The magazines are the same.

It's not a factory offering from Kahr, but it should be.
