Which shotgun do you suggest and why?

Out of a benelli Nova tactical, an 870, or a 500. It's purpose is home defense, and home defense only. I already have a shotgun for bird/trap. I like the Nova, but don't k ow if the price difference would be worth it. Suggestions?

i think all 3 are rock solid, you arent going to have a likely failure out of any of them, so for me id go with what i could get for the least dough. I have a 500 with the sidesaddle and light and lazer and extension......it sits in my closet and ive shot it maybe 100 times. Why tie money up in something you arent going to shoot that much.

I have had an 870 Express combo for 25 years and it has been a great shotgun, it has easily digested 20K rounds hunting and skeet shooting, with another couple hundred rounds of buckshot and slugs through the rifle sighted smooth bore 20" barrel.

I purchased a Mossberg 500 "Persuader" with an 18" barrel a few years ago, for HD duty, it has a couple hundred slug and buckshot rounds fired through it, and it has been 100% reliable as well.

For the money, either are hard to beat, but I am sure that the Nova is also an outstanding pump shotgun as well.

I have an 870 Express combo (a 28" barrel for trap and an 18" for home), but if it is only for HD buy the least expensive with a short barrel.

I have had problems with both 500's I have had. On one, the pump would not pump even if the trigger was pulled, and the other the pump came off the rail every 10 or 15 shots and had to be re-threaded and glued back on.

I would go with the Nova. How much is the safety of you and your family worth? A home defense gun has to work 100% of the time. You can't have any malfunctions, not so in my experience with the Mossberg 500.

This is just my experience though, only 2 out of how many made. I don't think I will buy another, especially for home defense. You will be buying the gun though, not me.

Good Luck, Antique Shooter

The 870 has the proven track record and would be my choice. The Mossberg's are much more problematic in my experience. The Nova may prove to be the best of the 3, but has not been around long enough to say for sure.

I've been depending on 870s for 40 years, so you can guess what my own preference is. For you, however, I'd suggest handling them all, shooting examples of each if you can manage it, and picking what you like best based on your own experience with the different shotguns in question.

What kind of shotgun is your bird gun, by the way? If you're already familiar with one of the listed designs, I'd suggest sticking with the same make/model if you can. I'm a believer in keeping it simple, and waking up with heart pounding at ohdarkthirty is a bad time to have to sort out the chops on a different shotgun IMO.

For $350.00 I use the Remington 870 express tactical, 12 ga. pump, with the Surefire forearm and light. It will do the job, and if confiscated because of evidence in a home invasion, I'm not out as much as my over / unders.

Love to see the 870 devotees saying the 500 has "issues." Now that is ironic. As stated, they all work real good. I've had a 590 with GRS and it is a really nice gun. Next HD shotgun is probably a Plain Jane 930. If I get a pump it will be an 870 from AIP Tactical.

+1 on Rem 870 Express Tactical

It has the right set up for HD and th proven track record of one of the best shotguns ever made. The 6+1 capacity is not bad either :D

Have Fun Shopping!

In my opinion, get a Remington 1100. They are light, good price, easy to maintain...etc.... Good Luck!
