I admit I love Savage rifles and always will....I'm looking for a 308 cal..I have dies,brass,bullets,etc....
I want it for deer hunting and maybe high power comp. shooting as well as a few varmits, like crows way out there...
Not sure how much I want to spend on one right now...But I know I want one..Maybe it doesn't have to be a savage, but I know their prices are usually pretty good.compared to the other makes and modles...
Does Savage make a middle weight barrel rifle in 08? I am looking...Thanks for any advice or ideas you have.....John

Savage has produced so many models over the years I am sure there is a .308 for you. I like my Remington 788, the queen of the plain rifles, and many were made in .308. A used one will set you back $300-350. They are very accurate. I have a Rem 700 VLS (Varmint-Laminated-Stock) that really won't do much better from the bench. It is too heavy for hunting, however.

Only .308" cal I own is a Dixon-Howa 30-06Springfield.

It's getting turned into a 6XC in a few weeks however.

It's a fine rifle though.

There are lots of good .308 cal rifles out there. I've got a Savage, a Remington, a Handi-Rifle, another Savage in .30-06 and two Winchester .30-30s. Oh, another Handi in .30-30. Lots of good rifles around with the .308 bore. With the .30 cal bore, there's no reason to limit yourself to one cartridge.

you might want to check out the savage light weight hunter, it's got me salivating, mostly because i can get it left handed. the gun nuts did a review on it and they were impressed with it. i've handled one and it's pretty as well as practical. also you could switch barrels at will. one gun many functions.

Modern Savage 110's are outstanding rifles and everyone I see with one is very happy with the trigger and accuracy.

Rem 700's have more accessories and are widely used by target shooters.

I like the M70 and think it is a great rifle.

I own a Ruger M77 T rifle in 308. It is a great rifle for varmits and shooting off a stand. It is heavy and not really suited for carrying in the field.

Two models which I have come to like, though I don't own one, is the Savage 99 and the Remington 600.

I have the Savage model 10 Precision Carbine with the accutrigger and accustock in 308. It is extremely accurate and very consistant.

Remington 700 5R i've yet to see a bad review about one. Mine is pretty amazing for a factory rifle honestly, shoots everything i've fed it so far.

Mossberg 308

Have a mossberg 308 bolt. Great rifle, accurate, easy to clean, and accurate. Older Savages are great, I have several that I like a lot. I also still have the last FV-12 Savage I bought several years back. It is the finest KEYHOLING machine ever made. It will KEYHOLE at 25yds or 100yds, take your pick. Which is why the last rifle I bought was a MOSSBERG. My 2cents worth. Let's all be careful out there:D:D

I know- I'm one of those who always has to be an oddball. But, you might keep your eyes out for a Remington 788. Doesn't everyone deserve to have at least one cult classic rifle in the brood?

Your not a fan of bolt action rifles in .308 but you'd rather shoot it with less performance in a semi auto. Do tell..

i'm pretty impressed with the dpms lr-308 my buddy brought over for me to work on... accurate rifle and it performed as well as my old savage 308 lever

I am far, far from being a rifle expert, but I think McShooty has hit the nail on the head:

A quick search using the Savage website shows ~50 current models chambered in .308. Surely, between those and whatever is out there on the used market, you can find one that meets your needs. I was looking for a .308 a while back, and Savage was one of several brands that seemed to come highly recommended.

There are lots of rifles that catch my eye, but there are two particular Savage rifles that I like: The Model: 11/111 Lightweight Hunter, and the Model: 10 Precision Carbine.

The problem is a rifle that would fit all that roles wouldn't be ideal for any of them.

Not sure what you are referring to with "high power comp. shooting", but across-the-course rifles generally use iron sights with a stripper clip slot for reloads.

If you are referring to long range any/any or F class matches, .308 is certainly capable, but not ideal.

For a long range Varmint rig, .308 is also certainly capable, but again, not ideal.

Long range varmint/competition guns are also normally heavy barreled beasts, and not particularly well suited to to toting around the woods chasing deer.

Are you looking for a heavy barreled rifle?

Savagelover:

The chores that you requre from a rifle requires at least two rifles: a sporter barrel and a heavy barrel. For the hunting I would purchase a Winchester M-70 in a 30/06 class cartridge. Any of the 7 magnums or 30 caliber magnums will do. For varmint I would rebarrel a M-70 with a heavy barreled varmint caliber like the 22-250. For long range targer shoting, 1,000 yard bullseye target, I again would rebarrel a M-70 to one of the modern magnums and have at it. It is with the varmint rifle and the target rifle that you might need the third rifle. The long range target rifle will doubble as a target and a varmint rifle; however, laying in a prairie dog town for an hour or so with a magnum rifle pounding your shoulder is not my idea of fun. In a good dog town it is not uncommod to shoot 100 rounds or more in an hour.
