For me it's been one persuasion or the other of the Ruger Security Six series ever since 1981; stainless or blued, fixed or adj. sights--they're all stone reliable and once I get the proper grips on them I shoot them well enough.

Easy second choice is any K frame S&W, preferably a M19 or 66 in 4" barrel.

If I had gotten smarter sooner my gun safe could probably be smaller.
 
I woned and shot a 686 S&W 4" in 357 mag before any of my semi-autos and I'll likely still own and shoot it long after all my current semi-autos have left my possession...

(But I'll likely never willingly give up all semi-autos!)
