as your primary defense gun if you couldn't have your autoloader.

Me: S&W Mod. 66 2 1/2"

State your choice but only ONE.

The above list is just as an informal poll.

Hmm, I put this in the Semi-Auto forum because I wanted the input of people who only like to shoot semi-autos.:( (Shrug)

A. I choose revolver for defensive use anyway.
2..If restricted to one....Smith 19, 2½', pre agreement.

Other-
N-Frame Smith 4" Model 29 stoked with the last of my stock of Winchester SuperX stock number X44MP-a 240 gr cast lead SWC pushing the 1050 FPS mark. The X44MP has a very large flat meplat and a very sharp shoulder. It's not a very hard cast and prior test I did 20 years ago with water jugs showed decent expansion for a soft point. The wieght of the big N frame softens the recoil of this load and makes it very shootable. The only drawbak to using full 240gr magnum loads is the tendancy for the cylinder speed to change shot to shot as the weight goes down. I've found this to be more distracting than the recoil.

Barring that load, the Federal Hydra Shok .44 Magnum loaded to approx. the same velocity shows excellent "paper figures". My past experience with Hydra Shoks in .45acp have shown them to be reilable accurate loads.

(FWIW, offensivly I'd go a Smith Model 19 with 6" barrel,, another "Other".)

I would choose what is in my holster right now.

A 4" model 66, lightly customized with a pinned-in black front sight, action job (replacing all MIM parts), round butt with smooth Gonalco Alves stocks. Currently loaded with Federal 125 gr JHP .357 Magnums. If I can't get it done with this package, I had better fall back on my M-4 or call for Tac-Air support.

I'm in the other category.

I'd pick my Dan Wesson 715-2 stainless .357 Magnum.

Gives me an extremely accurate handgun using a potent cartridge along with the ability to tailor the barrel size to the situation at hand.

Since it is for defense and CC was not stated, I'd opt for a 629 in 44mag, loaded with 44spcl 200g Speer Gold Dots or 44mag with 240g XTPs for more power.

Of those listed I'd opt for the 625 in 45acp with moon clips.

revolver choice

s&w mod. 629 classic with 5" barrel and hogue grips.
i have some leftover 280 gr. blacktalons. this set-up will kill ANYTHING native to the north american continent with a well placed shot. the well placed shot thing is a foremost reason for my choice. the revolver i chose allows for and produces very well placed shots.

I confess to carrying a Smith & Wesson Md 60, J frame much of the time but given the choice of the revolvers listed I would have to go with the Smith & Wesson Md 19 with a 4" barrel.

Out of the choices given I had to say "other" because mine is close to some there but not quite.

I would go for my S&W 65LS. It is a K-frame .357 with a 3" barrel and fixed sights. For a carry gun I'd much prefer fixed sights to the adjustable sights of the 66, 19, 586 and 686. The .38spl M10/64 would be a close second since my 65 would usually be loaded with .38+Ps, though I'd prefer the added versatility of the .357 option. However, even in the .38spl I'd still prefer a 3" barrel if I could find one, with a 4" being the fallback.

I hate to tell you this, but I would pick my Model 19 even if I COULD have my autoloader.

While I carry a J-frame most of the time, the 19 is my choice of "go to" for home defense and is carried quite a bit in winter, as well.

The 19s would be the absolute LAST of my handguns to go.
