Which one?

For nightstand - no 18" barrel shotguns - they are still too unwieldy for close quarters, IMHO.

- S&W 5906TSW (9mm zero low recoil)
- Glock 31 (good punch quick follow-up)
- S&W 327 (357 mag w 5" barrel - well...what can I say...) :)

All with a 2nd gen Streamlight TLR-2.

Well, since you asked, I'd go with the .357 mag. If it's for HD, have some umph behind the bullet...;)

I am a fool for semi-autos, but my dad has a Colt Python .357 and there is no question that if I had one shot that needed to count, that gun would be the one I'd want.

I was leaning toward the S&W 327 in 357 mag myself. You guys pushed me over the fence. Now I just have to convince the wife that *we* need a new nightstand pistol. Gotta find a good deal! :D

I am concerned about overpenetration for my night stand guns. The perp most likely will be between me and my house and/or family members. Collateral damage can defeat the purpose of "home protection". And I can say from personal experience that .357 flash can be blinding at night as well as deafening. My two gun nightstand combo is an old Colt Official Police .38 supported by a holstered Glock 17.

Agreed - I'm planning on .38 Special +P loads. I just like to have the extra 2 rounds and the rail for the TLR-2.

That's really the beauty of the .357, though, isn't it? .38 Special +P is a controllable, accurate, proven manstopper, AND you get the added .357 punch if you carry or travel.

unlike other rounds where you might suffer temporary hearling loss and damage, firing a full power .357 round inside a bedroom will give you permanent hearing damage, if not deafness.

I love my revolvers. I often carry a j-frame as my CCW. However, I am a realist. If I need a nightstand gun it will probably be because I'm awakened by something in the middle of the night when it's dark and my reflexes/skills are not 100% up to par. Add the fact that there is a good chance of running into more than one intruder and I will pick a high cap semi-auto.

Well, I'm gonna break with the majority also and say Glock 31. I'm actually surprised everyone has gone with the wheelgun. For me, I prefer higher capacity. And I feel pretty good about the 357 sig too. And for that matter, I feel good about Glock. I'd definitely be making mine the G31.

Well, that's only because of the limited choices the OP gave us. If he had opened it up for all options, I'd have voted for a 1911 in .45 acp.

I actually have a box of Remington ammo in .357 that is two big balls of lead, one sitting on top of the other, as the load. It is two .38 sized pieces of lead ready to be launched at an intruder. I keep this loaded in my .357 sitting by my bed. This is factory ammo!!!

I know you struck down the shotgun idea but I'd like to know why not. Unless your living in a closet or under the bed you probably have more than enough room to use it. It's not like your going to be diving over the furniture like a B-western hero.

I've no experience with any of the pistol models but I imagine that any of them will be just fine as long as they function properly.
