Which one should I get?

This will be my very first gun, and I've narrowed down my search to these 4 finalists:

1. SIG P226 in 9mm (stamped slide).

2. SIG P226 in 9mm (milled slide).

3. SIG P228 in 9mm.

4. SIG P229 in 9mm.

This will be for home defense, and range shooting only. Assuming that I like the "feel" of all 4 of these equally and I shoot all 4 equally well, which one should I get?

My vote is for the 229. I have both (228 & 229) and for me the 229 just "feels" better. Subjective, I know. :)

Well, i would say that there is not enough of a difference in them to really recommend one over the other. Pick them up, play with them, 'shoot' the lights in the ceiling of the gun store, and see what fits.

The stamped 228 would make a nicer sometimes carry gun for most people, but since you say it is for range/HD only, go with the milled 226 for more grip and more weight for faster recoil recovery. I like the feel/balance of the milled 226 better than the other 3. Whichever you end up buying look for some MecGar 20rnd mags for HD use, they are very reliable.

P228.

The P229 was originally designed for .40cal/.357Sig. You don't need the larger frame for 9MM.

The regular German made P226 is my favorite. P228 second choice. If concealed carry is your primary objective the P228 is first choice. I have owned many Sigs. They are great guns. Watch-Six

P226 (stamped) = 1 vote

P226 (milled) = 1 vote

P228 = 2 votes

P229 = 1 vote

CZ_ I didn't get your vote because you didn't say stamped or milled 226.

Why not the .229, in.40 S&W? Then, by changing only the barrel, you have 3 different calibers! It's a superb gun, in every respect!

Hey Doug. In that case it would be an aftermarket non-factory barrel. Maybe you can validate this, but I have heard from several people that the aftermarket 9mm barrel for the 229 is not as reliable as the factory SIG 9mm barrel. Plus, since this will be my first gun, I am really only interested in training with the 9mm caliber because I am recoil sensitive and also it's cheaper to practice alot with the 9mm. So it really comes down to the 4 choices that I already listed. Which one do you think I should get?

The milled slides are much better. I like the 226 as a full size gun if you want something a tad smaller get the 229.

P226 (stamped) was my first choice and the P228 was my second. I have four SIGs, but I'm not biased! (Really I'm not.):D

I feel the rolled slide Sigs are better balanced than the milled slide. The rolled slide Sigs are plenty strong enough for 9mm. The biggest advantage with milled is rust protection but rusting Sigs is not as common as some people will lead you to believe. I have 8 personally owned Sigs and I am my department armorer and I have yet seen a rusted Sig slide.

P226 stamped slide. Reason for the P226 is that the full cap mags are cheaper than full caps for a P228 and easier to find. The 9mm does not require the milled slide so why pay for it? There are used P226's available right now for $419, can't find a milled one for that. If you do later need to carry concealed you then GET to go out and buy a new P225 or P239. Oh darn, I have to go buy another gun.

Just found a better price on the P226. $389 at K-Y Imports

Hey ump45,

Of the choice's you listed, I cast my vote for
the Sig P228; but I much prefer the .45 caliber
Sig P220A. The P228 seems to be better balanced
than the P229; and I don't care for the European
style grip of the P226.:eek: :D

What climate do you live in. Here in Alaska I had a 226 show signes of rust after getting condensation from going from hot to cold. Sigs seem to rust easily. The only thing worse believe it or not is my new Para limited stainless p14 its rusting in the safe after being oiled. Para's stainless sucks. I am going to get it finished in something like NP3

355sigfan,
I live on the coast in California.

I actually did see one Sig with some signs of rust. It was a demo gun that was sitting on a dealers shelf.

I am not saying that Sigs do not rust, all guns will rust. I just think that the Sig rust think is overstated, just like the Kb thing in Glocks. Will they both happen? Yes, but not as much as one would believe from reading gun boards.

I think that since I live and work on the coast that our guns would rust easily due to the marine air if Sigs were "prone" to rust. It has not happened. We use breakfree CLP to clean and lub our guns. I have instructed our officers to wipe a thin coat on the exterior of the gun after cleaning. There is no other maintenance being done to the guns. I think with the most basic maintenance a Sig will give problem free service.
