Which of your guns for a long shot wager?

So a freind says "Hey i bet you can't hit this 12" round gong at 100, 150 or 200 yards with a handgun." You say, "Oh yes i can!"

What gun do you reach into your safe and pull out? How often do you expect to hit it? If you pick a single shot, you have to also pick a semi-auto or revolver because most single shot handguns are considerably more accurate. I had to throw in 150 and 200 because 100 yards isn't long distance for some handgunners. Just take your pick.

Out to 100 yards, I'd shoot a Single Six .22LR 6.5" barrel. Past that, i'd probably take my chances with a .357 4" GP100. With either at 100 yards, i'd expect 4 of 6 hits. But 3 of six is more likely. I'd probably be excited for 1 hit of 6 at 200 without any sighting shots.

Whacha'll got? Post pics if ya got 'em!

Isn't this basically the same topic we already have 6 pages on?

Similar, but completely different. I think most shooters would agree there are notable differences between a 50yd shot and a 200yd shot, such as the distance between shooter and target. Just about every shooter here can accurately shoot a .22 at 50 yards, but what about 200? And how many would pick a semi-auto vs the revolvers? Every topic in the world has been discussed on the internet before, but i got some interesting responses on that high road site and thought i'd see what the posters over here had to say. Oh, and that other thread was just carry guns.

I know there are some readers here who might like to read about shooting beyond the normal 7 yard working range of a pistol.

Do stocked pistols count?

Why not post your stocked pick and un-stocked pick? You and your buddy are negotiating the bet.

I reach for the 1911SC, 5". Paper plate at 50 yards? No more than 3 out of eight on the plate; that's with 2 hands, standing up, firing about once every 2 - 3 seconds.

100 yards? Can I borrow your rifle? :D

contender

contender 30-30
And 44 ruger super redhawk for revolver
wouldn't bet on any semi I own except Ruger Mark II.

I've never shot that far with a pistol, not counting my old crossman pellet gun. I would like to see what my P7M8 would do out to 100 yards, though. Last trip to the range, I was able to put together groups at 30 yards, offhand, not much bigger than my friend was making with his AR (about 5"), and I had made with my M1 Carbine. Now, to be fair, he just got it and was learning to shoot it with the EOTech, and my rear sight had worked loose.:(

Past 100, though, I'd probably do better with my old Taurus 607.

6.5 inch barrel .357 Blackhawk. Most accurate gun I own. That's not to say I shoot it better than some of my other guns, I don't practice with it enough but for slow, aimed fire it's the best.

100-200

Either my T/C Contender .30-30 or, in a semi-auto, the FN FiveseveN.
I think that this is a different situation than the 50 yard thread. Fifty yards is not a long shot (IMHO). The precision stage in outdoor conventional bullseye pistol is routinely shot at 50yds. When you get to 100-200 yards, you are in Silhouette territory. A different kettle of fish.

Model 29 w/8-3/8" barrel, nickel and all box stock.

It's already proved the premise at 200 yards by hitting the first rack of rams 3 out of 5, and then the second rack of rams 5 out of 5. All with open sights.

btolliverjr: yes, but longer range and my pick at 100yds plus range has to change cause of eyes. Optics a must so it would have to be scoped SBH 44. Farthest I`ve shot this gun is 150 yds. but not enough to do any betting. I`d stick 100yds. or less.

hmmm... which one ( as a Contender collector, I have many that wear scopes & are already sighted in at 200 yards ) this is my 45-70, but I have several TCU chamberings ( 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm ), & a 7-30 Waters barrel all in the scoped 14" versions as the 45-70 pictured, that are already sighted in at 200 yards... realistically 100% hits on a target that size...

Revolvers... 1st choice would likely be my 8.5" scoped Raging Hornet in 22 Hornet ( currently sighted at 100 yards, but could easily be dialed in for 150-200 yards ) bottom gun in this pic

my 2nd revolver choice would be my scoped 6" barrel Dan Wesson Super Mag, in 357 Remington Maximum currently sighted in for 75 yards, but could easily go longer...

my new S&W 610 would be a good 3rd choice ( if S&W could ever get it right )

as far as Autos... my 1st choice handsdown would be my scoped Automag 4 in 10mm Magnum currently sighted in at 100 yards, but could easily go longer...

2nd choice would be a tough choice between my Automag 3 in 30 Carbine...

my Automag 5 in 50 A.E...

or my Five seveN, it should easily do that kind of range, but it's new enough, that I haven't shot it that far yet ( due to winter getting in the way of my shooting )

Thanks SHORTWAVE... I have my own 300 yard range, & have just started getting back into rifles, & shooting to 300 yards... over the last 5-10 years, I shot mostly handguns, out to 200 yards or so... so I have many more handguns that fit in this thread, than maybe the "average guy" :)

I wish I could take better pics... some of the guys posting here are really artists as far as thier photography goes...:o

pic of that Automag 5 there was not room for in my previous post...
