Which of THESE guns for home defense?

Scratch the 1006, as you're not as comfortable with it. Scratch the P14 because of its failures and you're lack of experience with it. Go with either the 4006 or the 659. Either will do just fine. Carefully select your JHP ammo for each, however.

I'd go with the 659 in the house BECAUSE it has the least penetration; meaning that if you miss it is less likely to destroy something you wanted to keep intact... also because it has the largest capacity and if you grab it from the nightstand in a sleepy haze, you'll have more ammo should the haze cause you to miss the bad guy (or Mexican illegals who just happen to use your bedroom and their regular escape route... you'll find them out soon, I'm sure. :))

I'd go with the Para-Ordnance because it's not a $&#!!!

Even before they sold their souls, the only $&# autos I ever even kinda like were the TSW line. I've been to quite a few range trips where somebody hauled along a non TSW one, and they always had feed problems, or something similar, and each and every owner liked shooting either my HK or one of the many Glocks in the bunch better.

Now, if your quiz had been:

Glock - 20, 21, 22, 17, I'd definitely go 22 (.40).

Sorry FUD... I still have the utmost respect for your opinions, and your ability to be a well armed, dangerous SOB! :)

Fud, I would definitely go with the 9mm if that is the one you shoot the best. You've got all the advantages in the home. You know the layout while the perp doesn't. You are defending your property, family, life while the perp just wants a quick score. You've got every reason to be on your best.

Most home defense shootings won't be a major shootout where you are having to switch mags, etc. If it comes to that then none of the above and all of the above together will not help you much.

Best bet is to get a shotgun.

No to the 10mm. If you shoot the intruder and the power from the 10mm doesn't turn him inside out, you need a quick follow-up shot. Also, lets think of the noise when firearms are fired indoors. Not a primary concern, but a concern still.

No to the .45. Reliability is important. Use a gun you are familiar with and one where you don't need to think about the manual of arms at oh-dark-hundred. Reliability is important. I wouldn't want to be flicking the safety up when it should be flipped down. Did I mention reliability?

With the .40 and 9mm, it is a close call, but I would pick the 9mm because you shoot it better. My firing range groups are ( I'm assuming ) MUCH smaller than my "oh-crap-intruder-in-house-get-gun-fast" groups. By the time you use up 16 9mm rounds on a thug, either he will have accomplished his mission or you will have accomplished yours.

As an aside, politics of which gunmaker has sold out and which one hasn't doesn't mean a thing to the thug who wants your life.

FUD, you answered your own question brother.

If you're the most comfortable and acurate with the 9mm use it!

you know you can have it both ways, keep the 9mm in the nightstand now and practice like hell to get comfortable and capable with the .40, forget ANY gun that wont do what you want when you want and the 10 is too much for your house. you must remember that your walls probably wont stop a 9mm and Definitely wont stop a 10!

Pick the weapon you're willing to get comfortable with and shoot regularly. Do you reload? 45acp and 10mm are more expensive, then 40S&W, then 9mm. Also night sights are are must IMHO.

A very good idea mentioned above is to take into consideration what your wife shoots best.

I'd do some serious reliability testing with the P-14 and the chosen house load before I ruled it out. If it were flawless, it'd be my first choice. Train the family on the condition-one manual-of-arms. If it hiccups take the 9mm Smith. DA/SA right? You can leave it in the box DA off-safe. No levers to worry about, any family member can grab it and pull the trigger with the expected result.

Assuming you have fired all of them extensively and they all are reliable, I would take them in the following order...

1. S&W 1006 loaded with Federal 155-grain Hi-Shok JHPs

2. P-O P14 loaded with Federal 230-grain Hydra-Shoks

3. S&W 4006 loaded with Federal 155-grain Hydra-Shoks

4. S&W 5906 loaded with Federal 115-grain Hi-Shoks

Enjoy...

FUD,
Depends on what kind of building that you live in. Is your house/apartment level with your neighbors? Do other people occupy the other bedrooms in the house/apartment?
What you have to worry about is overpenetration.
I think if you are far from your neighbors and you don't have too many occupants in your building, I might choose the 10mm....the only hesistancy I might have is...how fast are you on the follow up shot?
Otherwise, I'd be happy with a .45ACP...I'm partial to 1911 pattern .45's.
Good luck, you lucky purchaser you...
:D :D :D :D

Hello FUD and All- My favorite home defense
handgun does not appear on your short list?
You, and all of the "senior members" here
at TFL know what my choice would be!!! Of
course, the world famous Sig-Sauer P220A
in .45ACP. You have seen my paper target's
shot with my 95' model P220; and I feel as
though I could do the same; from my night
stand drawer. As you know, the perp would
NO LONGER require air conditioning; if he
choose's to take that option. My back-up
home defense weapon is a Glock 27 .40S&W;
it to is always available, at the blink of
an eye.

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

Hey Dan, long time no hear. I'm actually saving up for a SIG (either the 226 or the 229 in .357SIG) but due to some unexpected money problems it looks like I won't be making that purchase until next year. So, for the time being, I have to go with what I actually have at home.

Dan, by the way, I don't know if you've noticed but I'm in last place during this round of competition. FUD.

I would choose the 659, if you're the most accurate with it. My 669 sits beside me each night (along with a 12 guage under the bed.) Why, because I am accurate with it, and I am comfortable relying on it to save my life.

Seems like a lot of people on this forum are blaming the gun for the gun makers actions. Where have I heard that argument used (unsucessfully) before...

Peace...
Keith

  •
S&W 1006 10mm - 10 rounds (9+1)

Para-Ordnance P14-45 .45ACP - (14+1) However, it has been mmy experience that this gun is not as accurate as the other three -- while I have never had a failure with the others, I have experienced a few failures with this one.

S&W 4006 .40S&W - (11+1)

S&W 659 9mm - "Out of the four guns listed here, I can shoot this one the most accurately..."

FUD, I believe you have answered your own question. You state you are most accurate with the 659. That is just as important as reliability. If you must fire a shot in anger in your own home, your highest priority is not endangering your loved ones anymore than they already are. You shoot best with the 659, this is your home defense gun. JMHO.
