Which of THESE guns for home defense?

Out of the following four guns ...

... which one should I have in my nightstand (actually in a strongbox with a simplex lock mounted under the bed) so that I can grab it first when I need a firearm?

S&W 1006 which offers ten rounds of 10mm - Out of the four guns listed, this one has the most powerful balistics and therefore the best stopping power. The drawback is that it has a significant kick to it and I might not be able to shoot it as accurately as might be required (what is it that they say about a hit with a .25ACP is better than a miss with a ...). Additionally, it holds only 10 rounds (9+1) -- the smallest amount of the four.

Para-Ordnance P14-45 which offers fifteen rounds of .45ACP - Ideally, at least on paper, this would appear to be the best choice as fifteen rounds of .45ACP is hard to beat. However, it has been mmy experience that this gun is not as accurate as the other three -- while I have never had a failure with the others, I have experienced a few failures with this one. Additionally, while I have shot & carried SA 1911-type guns, my training, background and bulk of my expereince has been with traditional DA/SA type firearms.

S&W 4006 which offers twelve rounds of .40S&W - While not as powerful as the 10mm, it gives the .45ACP a good run for the money. However, it only offers twelve rounds when compared to the fifteen offered by the .45 and the sixteen offered by the 9mm.

S&W 659 which offers sixteen rounds of 9mm - Out of the four guns listed here, I can shoot this one the most accurately and it does offer the most amount of ammo. However, while I myself have even posted here that when using the best loads there isn't much difference between the 9mm, .40S&W, and the .45ACP; the bottom line is that out of these four calibers, the 9mm has the least stopping power.
Under these conditions, which one should I elect to rely on as my primary home defense firearm?

FUD,

I believe you have a pretty good grasp on the variables here. I think you would be well-armed with any of them. Ultimately, you need to ask yourself which one is completely reliable and which one do you shoot best. The only one I might shy away from is the 10mm...potent as all get out but follow ups most likely won't come as quickly or accurately as you like.

Are there any other shooters in your domicile? I'd go with the one the least adept shooter shoots best. If all the shooters shoot like J Cirillo, let them pick.

As for mag capacity, HD shootings as a rule do not require more than a round ot two. If it goes past that, you need backup more than a bigger mag.

You still cling to the notion that Slick & Willy"s are good! Haven't you been listening to what the Sith have been telling you all this time?????!!!!! Embrace the Dark Side, and get a Glock!! Resistance is futile!! We will get you in the end!!

Well thought out question given the defined parameters. Based on what you have said my opinion is the S&W 659. If that is also the gun you have most confidence and shot placement with. You can increase stopping power by selecting right defense loads. I also faced similar situation as you, but taking wife's shooting ability into consideration. So we rely on Remington 870 (my hd tool)and Glock 17, night sights, tact light and Remington GOLDEN SABER +P 124 gr jhp or for practice Winchester's 115gr silvertip hp (her hd tools). My two cents.

Fud,

I would eliminate the Para 14-45, due to occasional non-reliability. In addition, if gator control remains a primary function of this handgun, I would also probably eliminate the 659, since I'd be concerned with the anti-dinosaur immediate stopping power of any 9x19 round. Among the remaining Smiths, I would select the most reliable and most accurate semiautomatic FOR YOU. Given your general level of awareness, firearms expertise, and composure under pressure, either the .40 or the 10mm S&Ws should be more than adequate (however, I personally prefer the 10mm round).

Regards.

Rather have a sister in a cat house, then a S&W in my night stand. If you need that many rounds for a bedroom intruder, you live in a bad part of town and your money would be better spent finding a nicer place to live. The neighbors would probably appreciate too. :)

Simple.

The one that YOU'RE most familiar with, and the one that is MOST RELIABLE with your chosen ammo.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

ak9, DOJ data tell us that trianed LEOs hit their target only 10-20% of the time in actual real life encounters. If trained LEO's miss 80-90% of the time, it is unreasonable to expect less trained home owners to do better. Even with 16 rounds, that means only 2-3 bullets will hit their mark -- that might not be enough especially if there is more than one intruder (which is sometimes the case).

Which one do you shoot the best? You pick the one you shoot the best. Your wife keeps the .380(Cool Gun wish I had one) and pick the pistol you have to best score with consistently.

PS cool background idea

FUD most people on TFL are probably more skilled with firearms than average LEO. How many times a week or month do you get to the range? How often do you dry fire? Myself I usually get to the range at least once or twice a month and dry fire 2 to 6 times per week.

Other factors being equal I would say pick the gun you play with the most. And have a 12 gauge, 20 gauge, or 5.56 long arm at hand to back up the swords and handguns.

* & * as it presently stands is not on my list as a "good" source of guns. But, lets be honest, in the past they did make good guns. I expect all of us has at least one and has no desire or reason to get rid of any of them. But, I just won't buy a NEW one at this point in time.

The vote from the boonies.
Drop B...Reliability, plus wife.

I know you be a bigun, probably with paws like Arties bear....BUT...I think nightstand weapon should be wife friendly. Remember the success of ChrisMKIV's wife.

If all operators were handy with em...would much prefer wheelgun. Ambidextrous, pull trigger and it go bang. No "limp wrist" problem.

How many of those autoloaders will fire a SECOND round if fired from other than a firm grip. Think of being on back and assorted odd positions of hand and arm for first shot.

Sam....in my own time zone

I've got a similar dilemna (229, P99, G23, Beretta, and P13.45). I actually keep 2 of them available at all times; one in the nightstand, one at the office. Which do I choose?

I actually rotate! Why, you ask?

First of all, yes, I do know that you should be comfortable with one gun so you'll know where the controls are. I keep them all chamber empty, and the slide and trigger on all of them is in the same place.

Secondly, I like to rotate the magazines. While I do have 6 P13 mags and 7 Beretta mags, I still like rotating them.

Finally, I like the variety. It's the spice of life!
