I had to sell off a bunch of my firearms a while back for personal reasons however I'm to the point again that I can slowly start building a new collection. Next purchase will be either a SR22 or SP101 in .22lr but not sure which one.

SR22: I've owned a couple different Walther P22s through out the years and really liked them. This SR22 seems to me like and improvement on the P22. I like that it's suppossed to be reliable with standard pressure rounds. I've always been more of an auto guy.

SP101: I don't own any revolvers at all right now. I like that I'd be able to shoot shorts and rat shot out of it. I like the looks better than the SR22. Wish it was offered with a blued finish.

It will be used for plinking is all. I like most of what I've been reading on both.

Ruger also makes a LCR 22 in blue. Have you looked at it? I also have a Walters P22 that is about worn out and was looking at the SR22 yesterday at $329. I think I paid $305 for the Walters several years ago.

just bought one of the new Ruger Single 10's nice stainless 10 shot single action revolver, 4" barrel, & Williams fiber optic sights

seems pretty nice, so far

MWM.....I looked at the new single ten and gave them some thought but I'd just rather have a DA. All Ruger shows on their site is a 5.5" barrel, I'd be more interested if it was 4".

if you want a plinker only, the LCR-22 might not be the best - it is a snubnose and so not really designed to be a target pistol (although personally I would like one). So the SP-101 with a longer barrel would be a better choice for a plinker if you would like a revolver. It sounds like you'd kind of like to have both since you would like something like the P22 but also would like to try a revolver. The revolver with rimfire ammo would seem to be more reliable but if you are used to a P22 maybe this isn't an issue for you. As plinkers they are both okay and won't break the bank. The real difference is how you like to load up - filling a magazine, racking the slide, etc. or loading a cylinder. With a revolver you miss all those moving parts - the slide, the shells flying around, etc. Little things but they do effect the overall experience.

I bought a SR22 last Friday and have already put about 600 rounds through it. It doesn't like Winchester bulk ammo much (I've had 1-2 malfunctions per magazine with Winchester), but it does fine with Remington and Federal Bulk Packs. My rear sight needed adjustment out of the box, but once I adjusted it, it's been very accurate. I highly recommend this pistol!

I imagine it might be the strongest da 22 ever made

I don't know about the strongest ever, but it sure is built like a tank!

In Rugers I have both an LCR 357 and the LCR 22. The LCR 22's main mission is as a Practice/Training J Frame size handgun. Not your specified purpose.

I have had a S&W 617 for years. It is a great plinker. For your purpose as a plinker the SP101 should fit your requirements fine. It should last you ever also.

I answered neither. Don't like the double action trigger pull on either. The best 22 LR double action revolver I have ever used is the S&W model 17 or 18. I also like the 617 but its a overkill on a L frame.
Regards.

Trouble is once you have one, you want them all. First, get the semi auto, then the 101 then a single six, then a bearcat, then one of those 22/45 threadeds with the rails so you can put toys on it.

Just bought an sr22 yesterday and LOVE IT! I've got a p22 and a beretta neos and I may sell them both I like it so much. I would highly recommend the auto

sr22= pot metal junk

sp101= stainless steel heirloom

There is a market for pot metal junk, apparently, judging by the plethora of examples out there......

My opinion
Neither one is particularly easy to shoot accurately, which is how I usually define a plinker.
My centerfire SP101 is a manageable carry gun, but even with trigger mods, it's a difficult gun to shoot well with a 2.25" barrel. Maybe with a 3-4" barrel it's adequate,providing one of those is available.

The SR22 is a nice choice if you want to carry an SR9 at some point, but it's yet another DA auto with an abominable long,creepy trigger just like the Walther P22 and other centerfire clones that have come out over the past few years. Not the sort of thing that I will be able to hit a 3" disk at 25yds with as consistently as I'd like.

For me, the Browning Buckmark and Ruger Mk I/II/III in all of it's iterations are the best currently made pistols for .22lr plinking. They're inexpensive, available used, incredibly accurate, and have great triggers (even stock) that can be modified to be incredible triggers.
You get so much more accuracy for the money with those guns. A revolver of similar accuracy and reliability would likely cost 50-100% more.
For revolvers, I'd either go Ruger Single 6/10 (both accurate) or skip all of the way up to a nice S&W such as the K-22 if you want a DA revolver. Experiences with Taurus 94 revolvers have soured me greatly on their triggers,accuracy, and reliability. The cheaper .22 SA revolvers like the Heritage Arms, are fun, but accuracy is hit and miss from what I've seen.

Is it just me or is the frame-mounted safety of the SR22 bass ackwards compared to all other safeties, including the ones on all of Ruger's models with safeties? It's just plain wrong.
