Which is the most inherently accurate round ?

Hey Muscles,,,,no kidding.....should I be changing the name to McFubsy or Macfubsy???, actually I know nothing of vulgarities but I do believe the Name fubsy is also in the dictionary......most likely it is not the definition listed in the book "depraved english, Vulgarities..).....email me and let know what it says.........fubsy.

ok you .40 S&W bashers. my K40 will shoot 1.5" groups at 7 yards shooting unsupported!! on the pistol rest i have targets with groups of 1.75" at 25 yards or less. my early model S&W 4006 cuts thoose groups in half at the same distances. my Sig P229 will regulary shoot 1 inch goups at 25 yards off of sand bags or a pistol rest if i do my part. these groups are with handloads taylored to my guns. many of the problems of accuracy with the .40 S&W are due to the wrong twist rate used on many early barrels. in the beginning it was thought that the 180 grain bullet would rule most .40 S&W shooting. we know better now but twist rates are still pretty much the same. after market barrels with twist rates set for lighter bullets are out there. i will go out on a limb here but i do not feel any cartridge has much of an accuracy edge. it is a combo of load and barrel and platform (pistol). i have contender barrels in most of the popular pistol calibers and all of them shoot sub MOA groups at any distance until the bullet starts running out of steam. remember the nut behind the butt is the main factor. oh, to the poor fellow with ten inch groups on a K40. have that barrel cleaned throughly and try it again. heck my sister shoots my K40 in stressfire type rapid drills and groups half that.

The edge that the .22 enjoys is lots more metal around the hole. That translates to more rigidity. Same with the .38's that end up with the bull barrels that bring it almost to the same proportion as the .22 for nearly same accuracy.

All other factors remaining equal, barrel rigidity (and with it more capacity to dissipate heat and resist deformity) will always help accuracy.

That is what always amazes me with the .45. It can be very accurate with a lousy ballistic coefficient stubby little clod of a bullet. And usually out of a thin barrel.

Maybe that would make it the most INHERENTLY accurate.

MusclesMcgee, about the only thing I would change with your list is replace the .40 with the .44(special);I have also had excellent results with the 44-40 although pistol design for this caliber can be somewhat limiting. As to bullet stabilization, barrel vibration and harmonic distortion play key roles with bullets reaching optimum stabilization at different ranges(oftentimes same caliber, different gun).
