which handgun / what caliber

Prof-

I got the impression you weren't from the US from parts of your post. And knowing how bad the laws are in certain parts of the US i can only imagine how oppressive they are in other parts of the world regarding self defense and firearms.

I would just hate for you to use lethal force in you living room with a open window and go to prison for life, versus

in your bedroom with the door kicked down and that is sufficient to prove legal innocence.

Little things like this can mean the difference between protecting you family and ending up in prison and being away from them for a very long time, unable to protect them in the meantime, and protecting them and being within the law.

Im just using the above as a rough example, if youre going to arm yourself you need to know How Where When and Why you can use lethal force in your country and even very locally.

I know youre just thinking about whats best for your family, but if you get hauled off theyre not going to be very well off and neither will you. Americans have this problem in many, many parts of our country. In my opinion it's inhumane and unjust to deny a person the right to defend their life. But that doesnt mean the court in your area wont put you in a cage for it.

My short version point being;
Unfortunately you need to consider the legal consequences as well as the physical threat of violence when protecting yourself. Its unfair and everyone in this community is going to disagree with it, but you cant "take one for the team" and lose your freedom and not be there for your family in general.

I have the CZ, it's been stellar. Too bad you can't afford 'practice' ammo, it's quite the shooter.

Viking sounds good too, or the Stoeger.

I guess nobody can ship you some ammo...

@SHNOMIDO: Ok, now I understand you better and you are pointing me to the right direction. I should get to know "little things" in law that you mentioned. I will certainly try to find out if such details exist over here.

@chris in va: No, ammo can't come in mail legally.

Why not the Bersa .22 and .380? They basically have the same feel and you can get both for about $550-600. This way you can maximize your practice opportunities and develop the apporpiate muscle memory with basically identical, reliable handguns. Just an idea. GL.

Quote from plouffedaddy:

Of the options you listed, I'd go with the Cougar. They're heavy and reliable 9mm's. I've shot my friends for about 200-300 rounds and never had a issue.

You've shot your friends 2-300 times? I'd hate to be on your bad side :p

The fact that you are willing to invest such a substantial portion of your income to protect your family is very commendable, downright courageous. I can't help but wonder how many of us would have handguns if a single handgun and ammunition represented such a large portion of our income.

My thoughts on selection parallel MLeake's: 9 mm is substantially better than .22 for defensive purposes, and the Cougar may well be your best value among the 9's you listed. Also echoing MLeake, the opportunity to apply the saving on the pistol to the purchase of ammo must be very valuable to you when these purchases are taking such a substantial part of your income.

Wishing you and your family safety and good health and prosperity.

if you are planning to use it just for home defense, i like the CZ85 but the Cougar is good. If you have the opportunity to do some plinking (Armscor)or small game hunting go with the Browning Buckmark. It is far from being an incapable defense weapon (CCI HP's). It won't take you long before you can put 10 rounds out of that buckmark into a pieplate at 10-15 yds. as fast as you can pull the trigger.

CZ and Buckmark of the choices listed.

Or you could save your money and move to the US. I can't imagine having to live with those restrictions.

I don't usually respond to threads like this one, but here are my opinions.

If self defence is a primary concern then the .22 might not be the best choice. If i had to use a .22 for protection i would want the highest quality revolver out there .In my opinion only a Smith & Wesson, Colt, or Ruger.

The CZ-85 is a good choice, so is the Cougar. I would choose the Cougar. The CZ offers nothing over the Stoeger in quality or reliability.
