Which Handgun For Any Circumstance?

I'd take a Glock 17. The firearm holds 17+1 rounds and a 9mm is an excellent all purpose round for self protection, hunting, and having extra ammo since it is smaller than the magnum rounds mentioned earlier. I trust Glock to my life every day so I don't know why I would do any different in this situation.

a pair of S&W 686 4 inch,a butt load(crates) of the best hard cast ammo,a pair of walker game ears, and me sitting on the beach waiting for help.

I reread your post and changed my answer. Originally I would have said my 10mm Glock, closely followed by a good .357 revolver. Since the island is uninhabited meaning the only thing I would have to get in a gun fight with would be some sort of predatory animal, I am going to say a .22 revolver with around a 6" bbl. It has to have accurate but rugged sights, be stainless steel, have a lanyard and a good chest holster or flap holster to keep it out of the gunk. I won't be doing quick draws...I hope.

No one will argue that 5 pounds of .22 ammo will go much farther that any other commonly available cartridge and no one will argue that a .22 will take most of the available game that be shot and ate. So my worry is to provide food for as long as possible. It will be much easier to kill a bird or what have you with a good .22 shot than with a net or snare or some such. That may be necessary in the long run but not for quite some time with 5 pounds of ammo. That also gives me plenty of time to build shelter, signal, gather, etc. Eventually you will run out of ammo, lose your gun, break it, trade it to monkeys for banana drinks, etc.

Is the island more tropical or temperate, etc? The reason being, you also said we could carry whatever other gear we wanted as long as it was on your person. A good fishing pole, tackle and netting won't take up much space depending on your local. A cold steel spear head can also be used to defend/hunt as a last resort. The tools we have or don't have will contribute much more in the long run just like in Castaway with Tom Hanks.

If I am not the biggest creature in the food chain, I will also count on things like a whistle, torches, bear spray, etc. to protect myself. These don't take up an excessive amount of space. Heck, with a good axe we could build a tree house ala Swiss Family Robinson! lol

Hope this is the type of "thought exercise answer" you were looking for.

The MP5 can fire 800 rounds per second or 13 rounds per second with its SEAR.
First, I think you mean 800 rounds/minute. :p

Second, at about 13 rds/sec (800 rpm) what are you going to do after the first 20 seconds? That's how long it'll take you to burn up about 5-lbs worth of ammo.

The 9mm has neither the range or punch needed to bring down any serious predator.

The OP said you'd have all the gear you think you'll need as long as you can carry it, but arbitrarily limited us to only 5-lbs of ammunition.

If one can 'carry it' and will be politely put ashore (i.e. not dumped 300 yards offshore and told to slug it out from there), then a wheeled basket cart with additional ammo/powder/etc could get you up to around 500 rds.

In retrospect, one idea that might be even better. Something like a .44 Caliber Remington black powder revolver. Consider -- 5 lbs of round ball is your ammo. pack 5 lbs of powder and watertight boxes of percussion caps, and assorted equipment. If you're lucky, you'll find saltpeter on the island (if volcanic) and maybe sulfur. Use charcoal and blend your own BP when you need it.

ETA for those of you taking along a .22LR, you'll have to write of your exploits of using it to defend against a hungry 'gator/croc. Or a band of baboons. Should make amusing reading.

hey, he wants an mp5 on his desert island, let him have it. deserted-island-ninja.

just cause your all alone doesnt mean you still can't be tacticool

If there's a band of baboons,,,

I'll be picking them off (one at a time) at 50 yards from behind a rock,,,
I wonder what they would taste like?

I once saw my Grandfather poac,,, eerrr,,, take an alligator,,,
With a .22 LR hollow point using a rifle,,,
Shot him right in the eye.

Of course my imaginary baboons won't know of me,,,
Until I've thinned them out a bit.

And that 'gator my Pa-paw shot,,,
Wasn't charging him.

But this is a fantasy island anyways,,,
I'll fantasize about being the best shot in the world.

7 baboons, 7 shots, 7 exploded eye sockets,,,
Roy Rogers style, fanned from the hip,,,
Rinse - Lather - Repeat,,,
I see no problem.

A G20 in a "Countryboy" holster by "RGrizzleLeather", loaded with a mix of "Double Tap" ammo (135gr@1600fps / 767 ft.lbs. & 200gr@1300fps/ 750 ft./lbs.)

That's 16 rounds of 41mag power in a reliable accurate platform!

If those "CREATURES" travel in packs I want to be able to rip off lots of rounds without having to reload.

after 30 secs

You can shoot them single shot as a pistol or rifle. And if need be in bursts.
Cover all your bases with one gun .

If there's a band of baboons,,,

Chicken, I heard. Probably tastes better than zombies or werewolves-which just might be on this island. Might want to pack a little salt in your survival gear!

I'm more than a little surprised that nobody's opted for a 1911 yet. Nor have I seen a Hi-Point mentioned. :) But when push comes to shove and ultimate reliability and versatility are prerequisites, it comes as no surprise to me that the out-of-vogue revolver is the hands down favorite-so far. ;)

I'm with greyson. that .22lr Taurus tracker would be prefect.i would be more concerned with having a good hatchet and blade. but hey some of you sure will look cool with them 9mm 357's and 45's. it's a shame no one will be around to  at you...:D.
