Which do you prefer?

The 17 is a wise choice. When I look at 9x19mm pistols, capacity is one of my biggest deciding factors.

etron,

I'm 6'5, 185lbs. I carry a G21 everywhere I go. Go with the G17, It's not hard to conceal, trust me on this one ;).

Hellfire.45

Make mine a mid-size too!

When I was a 1911-a-holic, my favorites were the Commanders.

Once I shed that awful affliction and played with the DA/SA options, I went for the S&W 6906 and 3913, Sig 228 & 229, USP Compact, etc.

Once struck by Glock Perfection, the 19 quickly became a favorite and the one I'd keep over the other three in my collection (34, 17, 26), if forced to liquidate.

FWIW

I like the G19 a little bit better. I have larger hands and I feel that the gun is really filling all of my hand out, sitting in it everytime the same way on a fast draw.

Technically there is no difference and I have one 19 that is more accurate than my other 19 and 17 - but then I have this old G17 that is every bit as accurate as the "good" 19 or 34.

I'd think this would be the easiest of choices. Just go down to your gun store and if your hands are small enough that the grooves on the 19 fit your fingers comfortably buy it, if they ride on the ridges you need a 17 to properly fit your hand. If neither fit you may want to try the G-30.

Good luck whatever you decide.

17c

Yea the 17 fits me better. I'm going to get that.

I might get the 17c because I'm a beginning shooter and I think it'll help me train better.

Plus I want to get my wife into shooting right now she doesn't even know i'm going to buy a gun :).

I think the 17c will be easier for her to shoot.

And then later on I can always get the 17 barrel.

Comparisons:

The G17 and G19 are essentially the same gun. I have them both. The grips are the same thickness. The G19 is just .5 inches shorter than the G17. The G19 is .5 inches less in length than the G17. Everything else is the same except capacity. In hi-caps mags the G17 holds 17 the G19 15. They both hold 10 in non hi-cap mags. Not a big diff in that department.

I use the G17 for fun and I use the G19 for carry. I use both for home defense.

There is little difference in muzzle velocity, accuaracy, recoil, or realiability. They are both great guns. I could not choose one over the other so I just bought them both, but if I had to choose, I would go with the G19 because it is a better all around gun sizewise.

I prefer G19. Slightly better grip, and for me a little more accurate and reliable than the G17.

Ok I've made up my mind. It's going to be the 17. I'm a relatively big guy (6'2" 185lbs) and I won't be carrying everyday, just occasionally depending on where I'm going.

The *only* remaining consideration is the 17c. I'm a beginning shooter, and I've never owned a gun before so I am considering the 17c because I've heard that it reduces muzzle flip and I'm thinking this could help me train to get better accuracy.

If you think you might have recoil problems then get a 17c. I really doubt that you will have any recoil problem with just the plain 17. You're a big guy you should be able to handle the recoil without any problem.

Might I suggest after getting the 17, you might want to buy another handgun in .22lr. If you want to shoot a lot the .22lr is the way to go. It is a great way to start learning.

Decisions, decisions....man, I love them both....I suppose the G19...it feels good in my hand, and is easy to shoot...can't go wrong with either one

Unless your wife has hands the same size as yours, the 19 would be the better gun. My Lady doesn't like the way the 17 sits in her hands, but she shoots the 19 like it was built just for her. There is a slight, but significant, difference between the 17 and 19 grip area.

I'd take the 19 over any other Glock, including the 18. The size vs. capacity make this the best defensive pistol I've ever had. Also, I can shoot it more accurately than the 17, for some reason.

Is it going to be difficult for you to hide a G17? Concealment isn't a big issue with me (and I'm not huge or overweight). If you can carry the 17 without a problem, go for it. I'm able to carry my monster-sized HK USP .45 in a Galco OWB holster under a T-shirt or polo shirt without printing. No, my shirts aren't 20 sizes too big either.;)

The 17C is nice. The 9mm doesn't really have too much recoil to begin with, but the ports reduce muzzle flip a lot. I'd say it brings the recoil level down to that of my Beretta 92FS, which is very light. Double taps will be no problem with the 17C. As I understand, the only down side to the "C" model is a loss of about 50 FPS with the 9mm round.

19 or 17

I'd go with the 19 for the following reasons:

1. Controllability. The difference in practical accuracy and controllability between the 17 and 19 is extremely small (for me). I actually prefer the 19 because it seems to balance better in my hand, as opposed to the 17, which balances slightly further forward. Because of the 17's longer slide, it should give you faster recovery on follow-up shots in double-tap and other rapid fire drills. In practice, however, I've found that the compact is just as fast as the full-size model. As far as accuracy goes, I've never noticed a substantial difference despite the 17's slightly longer sight radius -- I actually shoot the compact models better because of their balance.

2. Concealability. The 19 wins because of its slightly shorter grip. You will probably carry IWB, so muzzle length between the 17 and 19 is less important. (If you carry outside the waistband, the 17's muzzle may peak out under your covering garments, so the 19 wins.) Back to the grip ....... it tends to be the hardest part of a firearm to conceal. I'd opt for the 19 because of it's slightly smaller grip. Also, if you carry on your strong-side hip the 17's extra grip length will make a difference when it keeps rubbing against the back of your seat and putting pressure on your belt and side. Uncomfortable.

3. Capacity. Everything's a compromise. I wouldn't worry about giving up the two rounds. 15 is plenty. If you carry spare mags, carry full length 17 mags.

4. Storage. Even if you carry your Glock with you, you may have to remove it occasionally at banks, hospitals, court buildings, etc. The 19 is smaller and easier to tuck away than a 17. For example, I have no space under my seat 'cause it's filled with car gadgets .......... the 19 will go places where the 17 won't. Maybe not a concern for you.

I carried a 23 for a number of years and selected it instead of the 22 for the above reasons ..........
