Currently Autos have the edge
12 revolvers vs 17 autos. However, 3 of those autos are in "revolver" cartridges!
auto's are every bit as reliable and flexible as the out dated wheel gun.
I dosagree with this statement on two counts. First, revolvers are not outdated. New revolvers (new models and designs) are still coming out of the factories. No longer dominating the handgun market as they once did, but not outdated, nor obsolete.
Second is "flexible". Autopistols will only function reliably within a fairly small range of ammunition parameters. This can be changed by changing parts (most notably recoil springs) but they do not function with loads too light (or too heavy) for the range that they are set up for. The only exception to this is the Wildey, which has an adjustable gas system. And then there is the whole ammo feeding thing.
Revolvers in contrast will fuction with any ammo you can fit in the chambers, no matter the bullet profile, and covering then entire possible power spectrum fro the cartridge, from rounds that just barely exit the barrel up to the maximum pressure/velocity that the design of the gun will allow.
Autopistols, fed good ammo (and good is defined by ammo the pistol is tuned to shoot) are as reliable as revolvers. But they are not as versatile, with the one noted exception.
