Which carry pistol?

I own a S&W 686 and an HK USP 45f. I enjoy shooting the 686 and think my HK is a great pistol, but neither is a great in terms of concealed carry. I'm thinking about either an HK USP 9c or HK P7M8 as my carry piece. I would appreciate your thoughts on a great carry pistol. :)

Steve - I too have a USP .45F. I also have a .45C - yes slightly bigger than a 9C - regardless. I also have a Beretta 92C.

However the carry piece that I carry the most (and I carry every day - all day) Glock 27. I am not a Glock fan (it is the only one I own) but they have the market beat on this one.

G26 in 9MM / G27 in 40 - same size

True ankle carry / true tuckable IWB.

Good luck

Great carry pistol?

Sig-Sauer P220A .45ACP; don't leave home
without it. Qualities: Engineered Reliability,
Accurate, Light-weight, Comfortable (although
not a compact), and just damn outright beautiful.

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, Life Member N.R.A.

SIG P229 in the flavor of your choice: 9mm, .40 or .357 SIG (choose what you shoot best). P228 (9mm only) is the same physical size. Both models are of compact design, absolutely reliable, accurate out of the box, have good ergonomics and a comfortable IWB carry pistol ... what more do you need? They look good too!

Welcome to TFL, Captain!:)

There are a lot of things to consider before u decide on what to carry, like how big you are, prevailing weather condition, the level of comfort you're willing to sacrifice when carrying, your preferred carry method, etc. I own a USP9 full size (not ideal for CC!), and i bought an Uncle Mike's left hand IWB (#15) holster for it. I'm not a big person (5'6" 190#), but when i carry it at the small of my back, with rather thick clothing bloused over the gun, it's concealed rather nicely. But i would have to be very deliberate about my movements, because the gun is rather large. One problem is when i have to sit down and slouch, it will print. When driving, i had to adjust it to the 4 o'clock position to allow me to sit with a little comfort.

The best thing to do is to try a lot of combinations b4 deciding on what gun and holster to buy. Also, do a search of the TFL library. It has a lot of topics related to concealed carry.

Welcome aboard! :D

I have (among others) a USPc 9mm and a P7M13. Both are excellent guns in their own right.

The P7, however, is heavy. It also heats up so bad after about 50 rounds that you can't shoot it any more (not a problem for concealed carry unless you carry more than 50 rounds on you). It is beautiful to shoot and very accurate. There's also a certain mystique to the P7.

The USPc is also an excellent gun. My biggest complaint is that 13 round clips are very hard to come by, although they do exist. The USP, however, will hold more rounds than a P7M8 (the same as the P7M13), and is substantially lighter. It also doesn't have the heat problem that the P7 has.

If I had to choose a gun whose primary purpose would be concealed carry, of the two I'd go with the USPc. However, I would also check out the Glock 19/23 and the Walther P99 before I made that choice.

As much as I love my P7M8, it is a bit heavy. Between the USPc 9mm and the P7M8, I'd probably go with the USPc simply for the weight savings. Plus, the similarities between your USP 45 and the USPc will make its use more familiar for you if/when SHTF.

I love my P7s, but in your case, you should probably stick with similiar pistols for duty as well as concealed -so the USP 9MM would make more sense.

In this Brit's opinion, the finest handgun for legal carry (in the USA) is the SIG P239.

Damn shame that here in the UK we can only carry an handful of gravel.

Wm.

Between the two, I'd go with the P7 as it's quick into action, accurate and has a low bore axis. If it's too heavy as mentioned then the choice would be to the thicker 9mm Compact. I personally liked the balance of the P7 when I held it.

I too have a USP .45 and was looking for a CCW. Considered the USP compacts and the P7, ended up going with the Glock 27. I was also not a Glock fan until I met the G27. Great little package.

Take a look at a Kahr K series (9 or 40) or MK series (9 or 40). They also make a P series (9 or 40) that has a polymer frame and is significantly lighter. In my opinion, Kahr make a superior concealed carry gun than any of the aforementioned makes or models. I have a K9 Elite 98 9mm and an MK9 Elite 98 9mm. I love them both and would not trade either for any similar gun on the market. Vist their website at www.kahr.com.

Carry gun

I gotta stay with my stainless steel Ruger Speed Six .357... With a 2-3/4" barrel, a good spring kit, and a spurless hammer, it's perfect. Also I have a new SIG P239 with both .40 and 357Sig barrels, to spell the Ruger if it gets tired...

Great carry pistols

If you are into single stack nines, I would choose (and did) the Walther P5. But that's just me. I prefer Walther over HK. As far as .45's go, the best one I have found for fit, finish, and ease of carry is the Glock 36. If you want a full size nine that you can carry all day, look at the Walther P99.

I own both a P7M8 and a USP Compact 9. The P7 is inarguably the superior concealed weapon for the following reasons:

1. While the specs on both pistols seem to indicate that they have the same dimensions, the P7 feels much slimmer. Hold them both and you will agree.

2. The squeeze-cocker is idiot proof. No safety to fumble with, no accidental discharges when you are holstering/re-holstering.

3. The additional heft of the P7 really tames the recoil.

Don't listen to all the drivel about it "only" having 8 round magazines, or that the 9mm round is too weak, or that learning the squeeze-cocker will upset your muscle memory for other type of pistols. If you can afford the best, buy the P7. You will never regret it.

For CCW I really like the 45 Cal, Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry II. weighing in at 24 ounces with a 3" match barrel, and 10 round Mag. Makes for a nice light weight CCW.

Between the two guns isted I would pick the USP compact. If ou already have a full size USP ,transitioning to the compact shold be a breeze. You are already familiar with the pistol and have built up "muscle memory" for the gun.
If I had to choose something besides the listed guns I would take the Glock 36,an excellent carry gun.

It is truly awesome to live in the United States of America where first, we are having this discussion, and second, there are so many choices. I love my Smith & Wesson 3913 TSW.

AMEN bernie! I`d go with the USP 9C if I were in your shoes, for the reasons PW mentioned. Plus it`s just a good gun for the job. Marcus

My picks:
Small carry guns:
1) Khar MK-9

2) German made (not USA) PPK in .32 or .380

3) Kill/kell Tec p-32 ( seems many need factory work but their great).

Mid size:

1) Walther p-5 ( Sweet! super controlable and accurate 9mm)

2) Military surplus Makorov's * BEST BUY*(either e.german, Bulgarian, chinese, or even russian commercial....Bulgarian commercial is not as good-speaking from experiance).

3) Hk-p7

Big on's:

1) HK USP

2) Colt 1991a1 .45 acp

3) Glock 17

4) For bed side duty... Ruger Rehawk .45Lc

Over all I think if price is an issue go with a military surplus Makorov...if not for day to day carry a MK-9 is best.
