I just want to expand a bit on what I said about the gun hurting the mindset.
My gunny gave 3 marines and myself a little talk on how we as men and marines have lost a lot of our primal instincts. Now, hes a bit of a hardchargin ass kicking name taking kind of guy. So naturally as he's telling us that its kind of a bad thing wars are fought the way they are, that the other marines and I were kind of like 'ok, just keep listening and nodding to keep him happy.' He was telling us that when it comes down to it, yes we know a good deal how to fight. Be it a fist fight, or a gun fight we can probably hold our own. But what about when we get caught 'off guard,' or what most people would consider off guard? What he was getting at is that once upon a time man never was caught off guard. He was always ready, even if all he had was a rock.
Now, with my Gunnys speeches comes little demos. We took a 9 mil, cleared it obviously, and each of us holstered it. Now keep in mind this is one of those 'tacticool' quick release holsters. We would stand there and act like we were shooting the sh*t, when another marine would come from a stop to a all out charge at about 10-15 yards away with a stick in his hand. We would all try to unholster and get a shot off, and myself and one other guy managed too. However, they were in our face by then and could of easily sidestepped.
So then our gunny holstered the weapon, and my buddy charged him. As soon as he was about 5 feet away my gunny charged back, took him by the throat, and put him down. No special ju jitsu, no special tae kwon do, just a quick reaction with a little bit of muscle. And why wouldn't he? All the other guy had was a stick.
Whats my point? That was a scenario where even trained Marines, all 0311 rifleman chose to use a gun, when 'primal instinct' would of worked better. My gunny never once said to draw on them. It made me realize that had I not had a gun, I would've used some sort of hand to hand combat. But we did have it, and it weakened our natural instincts. So though we had a gun and thought we were ready for anything, we were not..unlike the caveman who only had a rock. Relying on a gun and a gun only is about as smart as picking up a log out of a fire with your bare hands. Even if you have a gun and know you can properly employ it in a certain situation, it doesnt mean you should. It's in my personal opinion that any able bodied CCW holder should also take SOME sort of self defense class. Hell, woman are doing it these days and kicking guys butts all over the place. Am I saying become the next chuck liddel? HECK no. But it could always help to know a little hip throw or armbar. Also, my other point. Momentum and surprise will get you through a lot. If someone draws a gun and says 'back up,' yes Im going to be a bit scared. But if I'm going to jump someone, and they react in a way my gunny did I would be shocked as hell and probably retreat.

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.
