Which base/rings to mount Vortex Viper PST on Remington 700 sps

Hey guys,

Im looking for suggestions for 20 moa base and ring combo to mount a new scope on my long range shooting rifle.

I recently picked up a Remington 700 sps in .308, unfortunately it came with a crappy BSA scope from the last owner...the BSA scope has already failed me which isnt surprising.

I have decided that I will be buying a vortex viper pst 4-16x50 ffp scope for my shooting needs ( planing on shooting out to 600, maybe 1000 sometime and occasional deer hunting in near future ).

Can anyone recommend specific 20 MOA bases and rings that would fit the 700 sps with this scope? Im also not sure what rings I need (low or medium) in order to accommodate for a 50mm objective.... Im worried about buying the wrong base or rings that may not fit the rifle so your help is greatly appreciated.

Also if you have suggestions for a variable power ffp mil dot scope other than the vortex for under $1000 please feel to post those as well!

I keep ruger and standard leupold rings of all the various heights in stock, select the height I need, and then re-order and replace the set I use. However, after understanding what you want to do, I see now why you're asking the question. A Leupold 15MOA picatinny base costs about 120$ and the Leupold mark 4, 30 or 34 mm, picatinny rings cost about 165$, plus shipping expense and your donation to the NRA. So this is something that you want to get right and buy only once.

You're probably looking at high or super high rings, but I don't know any sure way to do this other than buying the base and the scope, mounting the base, positioning the scope where it needs to be to clear the barrel and bolt handle, and then measuring the vertical distance. Then match that distance to the ring height, and order the rings.

While searching for rings and bases, I did see a Burris, 4-15X, 34mm tube, mil-dot scope that looked nice. 999$ at midway (catalog #449068).

EGW 1 piece or Nightforce 2 piece bases.
If you call Vortex and tell them you plan to use their scope with Vortex tactical rings, they can probably tell you whether you need low or medium.
 
My cousin has a 700 AAC (20" Heavy Barrel) and he used Vortex Precision Matched rings in Medium height for his Vortex 6-24X50 on a 20 MOA picatinny base.
 
One of my M700s had Vortex Precision Matched rings in Medium height for a Vortex 6-24X50 on a 20 MOA picatinny base. Was fine out to 1000.

I pulled it off and put on a Burris XTRII 4-20 the day after a hunt I had finally gotten so frustrated with it. No more frustration, lots more smiles.
 
The haze and blurry edges at the higher magnifications was a big one for me. The coatings did not work well over snow, concrete or water. The eye relief was also sensitive in that I had to re-focus between prone and spine verticle (bench, bi-pods, etc.) to get clarity. I also found that there was a slight anomaly when dialing based on temperature. I chased that for almost 300 rounds before I found that hot and cold, past about 600 yards, a slight error crept in. It was not until I swapped optics that I figured it out.

In general Vortex makes quality stuff. I guess I was just pushing beyond what that scope could do for what I wanted to use it for.

Here is my setup if you choose to go the Vortex route, Remington 700 SPS tactical AAC-SD with Vortex 6-24x50 ffP and I use the NightForce Direct Mount -Remington 700 Short Action .885 Low - 20 MOA -30mm for $185.00 at Optics Planet. It is a combo mount and my scope sits about 1/8th of an inch above the barrel.

Here's my Remington Model 700 SPS with 30mm Burris Medium Signatures Rings and a Badger Ordnance 20 MOA Base.

With the factory .308 Winchester Barrel and a Nikon Monarch X 2.5-10x44.

Later when it was rebarreled to .260 Remington and scoped with a Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x 50mm .

One thing to consider is that as you get larger optics, and higher rings, your head position/cheek weld change. Can be fixed of course, but just be prepared for it.

Doublea A...so far I really like your suggestion with regard to the night force shirt action direct mount! Did you have to get the mount bedded or were you able to simply use locktite? The night force direct seems like a great option that would allow me to avoid spending over 100 bucks on rings and then another 100+ for a base
From what your saying I should be able to get away with the "low" mount since I would also have a 50mm obj.

Also out of curiosity did you get the mil or MOA vortex and how do you like it ?

Or you could spend $29 for the mount I linked, and another $45 for the rings.

They aren't "Tacticool", but I have had them on my LR rig for 10 years, including a few flights, and my zero has never shifted.
 
emcon5 what sort of rings are you using on your rig with that base? my other worry is that without a 20moa base the scope which has a 50mm obj will sit too low interfering with the barrel
 
Standard Leupold rings, I am 99% sure they are "high", but unfortunately the rifle is at my buddies house, and I can't measure them.

According to Leupold, their 30mm rings, the difference between the "high" and "super high" are only .1" (High: .400" Super-High: .500"). The medium are only .175", so no way are they that, and looking at the clearance under the scope in the photos, I really don't think that would work.

The measured sight height I use for ballistics programs is 1.9". Even with "only" 15 MOA in the base, I have plenty of elevation at 1000 yards, and even had enough to get to 1400. Didn't hit a damn thing, but had the elevation to get there with a 6.5-06.

And I was mistaken, it hasn't been on there for 10 years, it has been almost 14 (where the heck do the years go?).

I use Warne bases and rings. If you call them their engineer/designer is very friendly and will tell you exactly what you need. And if Warne doesn't make it he will tell you who does.

The mount was not bedded as I simply used locktite and the fit is great. You will be able to get away with the "low" mount like mine. I have the MOA vortex and I really like it a lot. It tracks very well, has good clarity and I have never had any issue with it so far. I am thinking of buying another one for my AR15.
