Which Autos Do You Have "reasonable faith" in?

If you gave me an unaltered military 1911 and ball ammo, I'd trust it immediately. But if you gave me a new commercial 1911 however, I wouldn't trust it at all until I had time to give it a "fluff n' buff" job.

Sad, isn't it?

You asked about reliability. Well I have cranked over 80,000 rounds thru one of my Glock 21's, and allmost 40,000 thru a G17, but I don't believe any Glock is realiable until you go over 100,000 rounds. What do you think?

Hi, 9 x 45,

If you are serious, I think you either have a rich "uncle" or a lot more money and shooting time than I do. I don't know whether to envy you or not.

I own many autoloaders of differing makers and models. They are all really really nice guns, but the only one I allow to protect my life and love ones is my Beretta. It's never further than arms lenghts away at any given time.(and yes that means even when I'm in the shower,it's sitting on the sink, within arms reach!)

My probem is the emergency situation isn't a good form to discuss firearm reliability. If I'm unarmed & about to get shot. I get a pistol I'm not use to. It's going to be shoot or get shot. Now any thing can happen. Operrator error causes the weapon not to fire. I could fire & miss. Neither of which has any thing to do with firearm reliability. Now if you want to know other than my carry Glock 17 which pistol I would feel most comfortable with from the list. I would say a 1911 I already know I shoot a 1911 better than my Glock 17.

Mil Spec 1911

Not a race gun, not a "tuned" gun, but a regular, plain vanilla Mil Spec 1911, with the original crappy fixed sights. Springfield seems to have the one closest to the original. Looser slide to frame fit, takes McCormick ten round mags and will shoot almost totally dry, in a pinch.

If all else fails I can always club them to death with out breaking the frame and getting plastic shards in my hand.

Any full size Sig, Glock, Beretta, Walther or HK, and perhaps a BHP. (although I detest single action pistols) Under no circumstances any 1911.

I think a list of the usual big European names would cover it along with the Ruger's.

The ones I would avoid would be a weapon that people tend to modify, like a 1911 (either because it has been changed, or needs it).

It always seems best to go with a gun model that is manufactored successfully by only one company-that seems to keep the quality up.

On top of that, 9mm's are generally a little more reliable than any other loading, so I would grab the Beretta 92 before the G23.

Given the parallel thread on problematic weapons, a never shot before 1911 seems like a particulary foolhardy choice. Stamping "mil-spec" on the slide doesn't guard the weapon against modification or poor manufactoring. Auto Ordanance, anyone?

Has anyone ever heard of a Walther P5 or P88 that jammed?

I would trust any of these in this order Glock, Sig, H&K. A Glock outta the box would be my number one choice because they aren't as thirsty for oil as a lot of other brands. Sig is a thirsty beast but great on reliability. H&K USP is another tried and true blue firearm and I have faith in them as well just not as much experience with them as I have with Glock and Sig.
But if I had to go from the box to the range w/ no time inbetween I would have to say Glock.

Re HK USP

I would take the HK USP .45 off the list.

I love the gun. With the trigger upgrade it shoots very accurately.

But... in 3000 rounds I have had two firing pins break.

One time the firing pin sheared in half. The rear part ejected out the back of the gun and hit me in the face.

Pre-mature firing pin breakage is a known problem with the gun.

I don't trust it anymore as a carry weapon.

Give me a Sig or Glock for that.

Actually, I really don't think there is any better defensive handgun than a Sig 226 with a full-cap mag. I like my Glocks, but the Sig is much more ergonomic, and points better. In stress-fire situation, that may make the difference between a hit and a miss.

Like DonP, I'd want a box-stock mil-spec 1911.
Then any of the Sigs.
Then any Glock.

I'd prefer a weapon that I was familiar with, and had actually fired, alot.

In a pinch, beggars can't be choosers. I'd take what was offered, and be happy and grateful (in the specified situation), to have someone around who'd be willing to part with his/her 'other' gun.

Reasonable Faith.

Any of the auto's that I own I have reasonable faith in or I wouldn't buy them in the first place and if they don't perform the way I want them to I would "Fix" them or let them go. One of the most reliable autos ever made has to be a Ruger 22 handgun, I have several that are perfect in the reliabilty areas. Most others autos are pretty reliable right out of the box if fed good ammo from a good magazine. I like the 1911's and Ruger autos and even a few others that are not really big name handguns, but they ALL work they way they should or I don't keep them. And I keep almost every thing I buy. :D

I have both a Glock-21 and a Glock-30 and do you know what? I don't really care for either. Polymer and I just don't seem to get along. That being said, others have picked up both pistols and have had lots of luck.
However in answering your question I would pick the Berreta 92F. I know the drill and I also know from experience that I can hit what I am aiming at and it will put up with any abuse I might give it.
But if truth be told, the only handguns I would feel 99.9% comfortable of functioning out of the box would be a revolver.
Notably a pre-S&W or Colt.

Just my view from the cheap seats!
