Which Autos Do You Have "reasonable faith" in?

Which ones would you feel comfortable or even happy with (reliability wise) if someone gave one to you in an emergency situation since you didn't have one. (oh yes, God forbid) ;)

Glock 17/19/26/22/23/27/21/30/20/34/35

Sig Sauer P228/P229/P220/P226/P225 (9mm/.357/.40/.45)

HK USP/f .45

Beretta 92 fs (9mm)

S&W 4506 (.45) yes, the "boat anchor"

*Sad to say I wouldn't feel as comfortable with a strange 1911/1991A1 or P35/BHP unless I function tested it beforehand. I've run into a lot of well worn and abused ones.

I don't get the question. Your talking about a situation where your unarmed & you get handed a pistol prior to a gun fight. Then you give a list. Then you say you would like to test a 1911/BHP first. In the emergency situaton you don't get to test the pistol. It will fire or not. All the pistol you list should fire. Even if the pistol does fire, because you never fired the pistol, you might not hit what your firing at. Also if this is a pistol you haven't handled you might not operate the controls correctly on the first try. Then you have to define reliable. To me reliability means the pistol will fire, eject spent shell, & load a new rd. Again the pistol might be reliable, but a strange pistol might not be shot accuratelly. I'm use to a Glock 17 with a 3.5# trigger. You hand me a DA/SA pistol. I'm not use to the 12# DA trigger pull, I shoot & miss. now was that pistol reliable yes, no, maybe?

Oh, &%^%$^%$&!

I guess I was vague. Late night blah, blah.

I guess a better way of phrasing it would be which pistols that you've had experience with would you trust "out of the box".

There.:barf:

out of the box...

None. I have to put at least 500 jam free rounds before I start to trust an autoloader. I have had failures with all makes.

Being somewhat of a riverboat gambler-

give me the Sig P220 in .45 ACP. But, I really don't see a
bad weapon on your list. :D :)

I think some people are missing the point of the thread.

I think what Ian is trying to ask is a theoretical question.

Lets say you are about to enter a dangerous situation, where a gunfight may ensue. You have no gun with you. The gun fairy comes down with a sack full of guns. Being a gun enthusiast, you are familiar with the manual of arms for all the guns the fairy has. You are not allowed to test fire any of them, you just have to pick one out of the sack (your choice), and go to the fight. You need to pick the one you think would likely be most reliable.

What would you pick?

As far as Ian's 1911 reference, he is saying he would not pick a 1911 because he could not test fire it for reliablity first. I would agree with that. 1911's can be great, but I would not want one that I hadnt proved to be reliable.

Personally, I would pick a Glock. If not a Glock, then I would go with a Sig, preferably a 220 as well.

I have reasonable faith in all you mentioned, but would be very ready for the tap/rack/bang drill just in case.

Never fired the SxW, so not too sure about that one.

Oh and if I had the opportunity to pick, it would be the USP .45.

Kinda far-fetched, but it DOES happen - - -

Well, maybe not the Gun Fairy bit, but . . . .

It could happen that you arrive at the immediate aftermath of a fight in which a couple of handguns had been dropped. Which one to pick? Is that a realistic summation of the question?

Anyway, the ONE time I had such an opportunity, I rounded the corner of a house into the front yard where a uniformed officer was in a battle-royal wrasslin' match with a local thug who was known to go armed. A Ruger Security-Six was on the grass, along with radio, handcuffs, and assorted plunder. I picked up the revolver, stuffed it in my belt and grabbed an arm. The cop, not recognizing me, ordered me to back off. Another officer was pulling up, and I complied.

I felt that, if the thug's running mates arrived to join in, I could do better with the .357 than with my own PPK. I collected some eyeglasses and TWO radios before the melee ended. I told the original officer, "Here's some of your gear," and offered him the Ruger, butt first. It took him two grabs at his empty holster to realize that this was HIS sidearm, and for the other cop to tell me thanks. :p

I had glanced at the revolver and seen it was loaded and not clogged with foreign matter. It never occurred to me that I couldn't use it effectively, at least at short range.

Best,
Johnny

I would trust any large frame Glock. The others would be hard to trust out of the box. I have put 1,000s of rounds through my G17 with not one jam. I have tried every brand of ammo and even a large amount of reloads with no problems. This Glock is a keeper!

Sounds like the Army. You use what they give you. If it works whenever you use it, you begin to trust it. "Emergency situations" don't usually last that long....

One year ago, in another country, I was 'lent' a S&W stainless 9mm (no idea what model), and because it was the only pistol available to me, I eeded one and it was an honor to have it lent, I had "reasonable faith" in it.

On the other hand, I wouldn't buy a S&W semi here in the USA.

Everything has to be taken in context.

most definitely the Beretta 92FS. i've got an M9 (same as 92FS), and it feeds like a beast. no hangs, jams, misfires... just pure reliability. awesome firearm.

Any Glock except the 36 and possibly the 29.
Any major-brand, new-manufacture 1911.
Beretta 92.
SIG 220, 226, 228 or 229.
HK P7, USP full size 9mm or 40 and Compact 9mm or 40.

"Out of the box" meaning "no modifications"? Any of the above listed guns would be fine with me. If I had to pick one? Any of the Sigs, or the 4506.

Ok, that's not picking one. I'll try again.

Any of the Sigs, or the 4506.

There are things about em' I detest but I will go on record as saying the Glock is one the few "just add water" handguns out there. They work out of the box.
