Which 7.62x54R rifle?

Stop by and visited the local Big 5 Sporting Goods and found myself a nice Hungarian M44 carbine dated 1953. It's in decent shape, bore's kinda dark but can't beat the price. This little sucker's gonna have some kick to it! Honey, grab the Tylenol :D

About 30-40 years ago there was a large amount of Russian? surplus Winchester model 1895 lever action 7.62x44R rifles available at low prices. I found them in almost every shop I visited. Where are they now?

That should be 7.62X54R Win 1895, not 44R. They shouldn't have put the 4 key so close to the 5 key on the keyboard!

Congrats on the M44 purchase

Glock racer, I'm sure you'll be happy with that rifle. I opted for the Polish one primarily due to heritage and partly because of their reputation. The Hungarian you've purchased, however, will perform very well. You'll have a good time with it, too. Just don't shoot in your tee-shirt!

Just joined the M44 club today. Picked up a perfect, looks to be unfired (not for long :D ) 1948 dated Russian rifle. Wood is sound, matching and clean. Blueing is even, dark and beautiful. The bore sharp and shinny. The price $93 with tax. Ammo is going for less than $.09 a round for 1987 surplus and new S&B for $7.95/20. Can't wait to give it a try indoors Monday. Will have it outdoors the following Sunday, weather permitting.

Anyone know of any do's or don'ts will these rifles? I've heard that they shoot the best with the bayonet fixed, true? Any good links to web sites? Thanks for the help and watch for a range report coming soon. :)

Hey 3gun. Your in for a wild ride shootin a M44 indoors :). If you got that at the Summit Co show, you probably bought yours from the same dealer I did. (the price was the same) I was shooting mine today at a piece of 6" well pipe at 250 yards, and it was no problem hitting it from a bench. Get a medium slip on rubber recoil pad if your going to shoot from a bench and you want to do a hundred rounds or so. I get the best accuracy from my gun with the bayonet removed. I have friends that shoot with the bayo on but they dont get the same groups as I do with it off. I think you'll find that gun is a real joy to own. BTW, it really floors those plates.

To bayo or not to Bayo.....l

I've got a thread running here:

www.milsurpshooter.com

Go to Mosin Nagant forum and look for the Bayo question. There, you'll find a number of answers to your Bayonet question.
