Which .454...Ruger or Taurus?

Sub MOA

New member
Am kicking around the idea of a .454 Casull. While I like the look and the reputation of the Freedom Arms, they're a little out of my price range. So...Taurus Raging Bull or Ruger SuperRedhawk? Strengths, weakness, pros, cons. Would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Sub

Good Grief, I'm the only one?

Hiho! I've shot more than several of all the 454s mentioned Sub but IME I like the Ruger, it;s stronger than the Bull, more accurate and holds six rounds instead of five like the Bull. The comp. on the Bull works well but is a pain to clean and is ear piercing as it increases an already very noisy gun. I highly suggest the optional Burris rings over the factory Rugers for better fit with the heavy recoiling loads. Roy

I have a 6.5 inch SS Bull and like it very much. The ports are a little tough to clean, but I got a small brush that cured that problem. The extra round in the Ruger was not a big enough difference for me. I like the ported barrel and vents to keep the heat down as well as the price. I got mine for 577.00 NIB from YOungs Guns and Archery. I am very happy with my Bull and am sure that the Ruger is also a fine gun. But the Taurus deffinitely looks better and I find it very accurate.

I am planning to buy a Ruger as soon as a buddy let's me fire his so I can get a feel for it.

A friend has a 8 3/8" Bull and likes it. It developed a crack in the barrel throat and he gave it to his dealer to fix. Now he is looking at a Ruger.

I have fired a ruger 454 and a taurus 454, I would go with the ruger as I hate the ports due to about a 200% increase in heard sound and not much help on recoil.

The SRH .454 is a six-shooter, but it uses much better steel than the Taurus. It may be the strongest weapon sold.

My SRH in .454 is the most accurate revolver I've ever fired. If a round hits outside the group, I know I flinched.

srh 454 ?

will the trigger get better as i shoot it more it is very accurate but i hate the heavy trigger.i have heard you can change the springs unlike the rh it will not cause lite primer strikes.i have not had mine apart yet. im shooting my redhawk so much i have not had time to shoot the srh very much yet ,thanks, keith

Regarding the trigger, I replaced the trigger return spring and the hammer spring on mine. After test firinging, I had one misfire (out of 100 or so) so I put the original hammer spring back in the gun. This lightened the trigger enough for me.

If there is still some trigger creep, have a 'smith who is familiar with Rugers stone the appropriate parts.

As another comment, my Redhawk has a reduced spring, and is 100% reliable, including magnum primers.

my redhawk is to but with fed not cci.i have had some cci not go off with the factory spring it must be one heck of a tuff primer is all i can say.

Hey, Kobra! Just curious: what was the deal with the crack in the barrel throat of the Bull? What types of loads was he using? My guess, and this is just a guess, is some of the 240 grain at 1900-2000fps stuff. Just wondering....

Mobias,

My buddy is an older man with one hell of a gun collection so he is quite meticulous about his weapons and when he discovered the crack he sent it back to Taurus through the dealer and they fixed it. Apparently it had a crack in the barrel throat. Also he had been only shooting "target loads" thru it. Another buddy here at work is a big time reloader and he came up with a more mellow 454 load to shoot. I have no idea about the fps on this load or really what it was composed of.

He is sense looking at a Ruger now.

Easy one...RUGER. One of my shooting buddies got one for X'mas '00. 6 months later, the trigger is smooth as glass, accuracy is unbelievable, finish is unique & durable and FUN to shoot the hotter loads with.
I am not a Taurus fan. Have owned one of their older revolvers and semi autos. Couldn't get rid of the semi-auto soon enough and the revolver is just not right. Heavy trigger, poor finish. Plus, I believe the Raging bull has a ported barrel and for whatever reason, I'm not a ported/compensated barrel fan.

At a local gun store they have both the Ruger & the Taurus 454's and there is only a $10 difference in the price at this store.

The Ruger is $650 and the Taurus is $640, if I were in the market for one I know which one it would be, not the Taurus.

How do these prices compare to what everyone else has seen in your area?

I have a RB and I agree that the Ruger is stronger, BUT, how many times do you plan to shoot a year? Its fun to shoot but very expensive. I use mine as a hunter and I'm a good enough hunter and shot that I don't have to worry about like 75 yard shots. If you plan to shoot a lot I would go for the Ruger, but if you just shoot a few hundred rounds a year, the RB will work.

Oh and for prices, I paid $375 used and it was in good shape. Some kid (my gun store is in a college town) bought it and shot it a few times and sold it.

If I HAD to choose between Ruger and Tarus, then Ruger. However, the loads I shoot out of my FA would split a Ruger like a ripe banana.

350grLBT, 31gr H110/W296, 75000cup, 1700fps from a 6"

About 2200 ftlbs ME. :D
