Out of your list, I prefer the Springfield. To me it has the best trigger and ergonomics. That said, other than the Nano, all of those are fine guns and it really boils down to what feels and points best for you.

Walther PPS in 40SW, thin, accurate and a great shooter.

+1.

If I were buying one myself however.... The Walther PPS would be my choice too.

I might also ask if you've shot a .40 in a subcompact before? If you haven't, I'd suggest renting one if you can before you buy. Recoil is pretty snappy.

Varies by make/model. Walther PPS and HK P2000SK aren't bad. Kahrs and Glocks are snappy for sure. Also one man's meat is another man's poison so good point, rent and prevent an expensive mistake.

I was asking this question for a relative who was asking for my advice and I told I could ask here for him.
So is this a list of what your relative has an interest in? Have they indicated the preference in size, weight, and capacity? Is one or two features markedly more important than others? How are they planning to carry?

None of the above.

A buddy has a Shield in 40 that has trouble with higher performance ammunition, even though it works fine with cheaper target ammo.
His Shield jams about every other round when using the Critical Defense offering from Hornady, and he also had trouble with a few different brands of JHP's.

My PPS will run any thing i throw at it. No failures yet.
But it does make your hand sore after about 50 rounds.

I have not tried any of the other ones on your list, so i can not give an opinion about them.

I know it isn't a .40 but I concealed carry an XDs in .45 and to be honest weight and bulk are not an issue. It seems to disappear on my hip. I believe the .40 XDs is the same size, the only difference is magazine capacity.

I wasn't a big Glock fan either. I picked up a G27 4gen because a friend of mine had one and I liked it. I added the mag extension and it has quickly become my favorite carry gun. Feels great in my hand and is very accurate. If your friend gets a chance, he should take a look at one and see how it feels in his hand.

You should look at and try a Springfield EMP in .40 if a 1911 style pistol interests you. It's small and easily carried concealed. It's heavier than it's sister 9mm EMP because of a heavier slide/frame but accurate and I love mine.

I'm making the same decision myself right now. Leaning toward the S+W right now because it fits my hand the best.
I'll be hitting the rental range to make the final decision

Yes, this is the list my relative dictated to me as I typed. He wants a compact gun but not a subcompact gun. He didn't know that some of the models he listed were subcompact, and is now looking at the compact versions. He wants thin, but not real short. I haven't asked about weight, capacity, or features, but he is aware of the specs and features of each gun. He was more worried about if these were all of comparable build quality, reliability, feel, etc. And if they were, he'd make a decision from there based on personal preference.

I shot many of the compact in 40, I settled on the kahr k40. Handled the 40 better for me than all the rest!! Highly recommend it!! Second is sig p239!!

"He wants thin but not real short"

Sounds like, as someone else mentioned, he should reconsider caliber and look at the XDs 4.0, available in 9mm or 45ACP.
