which 22 semi-auto target pistol do you like?

I love my Ruger 5.5" bull barrel MKII! I had a trigger job done on it for bullseye shooting. It is built like a tank, will outlast you!

Put another vote down for Ruger's MkII Target with its excellent accuracy and reliability. Case in point - took a rabbit with it last weekend @ 25ish yards. If I may gloat a bit, I was very impressed with myself!

Picked up mine used about ten years ago and it's still shooting with no hang-ups. It shoots whether it is clean or dirty, but maybe I'll add the toothbrush to the range bag just in case.

* Saw an interesting version at the gunstore today: NIB factory blued Ruger with VERY short 3ish" bbl and wood grips, not a Volq gun. Anyone know if it's a custom run from Ruger or just a regular Ruger production pistol?

Well, here's a lone voice for the Browning Buck Mark line. I had a Ruger MKII, and really enjoyed it, but after trying the Browning out... I couldn't look back. What a great gun.

Shot for shot, my experience has been that the browning is a little bit more accurate but the ruger is much more reliable.
Ruger ships two mags with their pistols while browning ships one mag. Browning mags are much higher.
Anybody have any experience with the s&w 22a?

Depends on the money you want to spend....The guns suggested so far are great guns..if you want just 22lr plinking..take a look at a Phoenix HP22 or the Firestorm 22..both can be had new for about $200 or less I believe. Oh, and don't forget the USED smiths the 422, 622 and 2206.

IMHO I would advise against the Buckmark. I am the armorer for a rifle and pistol group and we shoot about 300 rds/week out of our pistols. We have a coupla Buckmarks and they have nice trigger and are fairly accurate...BUT: The rear sight base (which holds the gun together) ALWAYS works loose during practices. This causes nearly complete malfunction. I'll be shooting and someone will tap me on the shoulder, "My Buckmark isn't working Dan, can you fix it?" All I have to do is screw the sight base down. Sure I could Loctite it, but I don't think you should have to Loctite a gun just for the dang thing to stay assembled!!!

You want a true target pistol?

Either the Walther GSP or Hammerli 208S(discontinued) would be the first choices. They are both excellent, but my preference is to the Walther. They are both excellent and a pleasure to shoot.

No US manufacturer currently makes a true target grade pistol. The SW 41 is close. I have the bull and long slides for mine

The Rugers and others are plinkers. I have a Ruger. It is a gun that I don't mind the dog using as a chew toy. It works.

I shot a HiStandard Supermatic Citation for years & sold it to buy a MkII 51/2" Bull. The Ruger got different front & rear sights, a top notch trigger job, & served me very well. But, every time I shot it I would say; I wish I had my Citation back! Eventually I puchased another 51/2" Citation at a gun show & had the chance to shoot it & the Ruger side by side, and was surprised that the Ruger(with it's modifications) held it's own very well! But I'm still surprised that no one on this post has cast their vote for the HiStandard? So if you get the chance, try one. Good barrels, awesome sights, & a trigger that everybody wishes they had on every gun they own! Sometimes the past ain't so bad, or should I say, them was the good ol' days. ;)

The Hammerli SP20 Target Pistol, .22lr would be my first choice just look at this olyimpic Medal winner.

'Wanting to look into a 22 target pistol for plinking. '

This is a good clue as to what you want. Sure any Hammerli (I have the 208S), the Walther GSP (hope to get one), Sako Triace (I have the kit), there is a Russian TOZ(?), are all world class target pistols, but are expensive and not suitable for plinking as they are not sprung for the cheap high velocity ammo. The Ruger or Buckmark are not true target pistols, just plinkers. Keep in mind that a target pistol is generally capable of putting all of its' shots in a hole that can be covered by a dime at 25 meters. That still leaves a number of good choices. I have seen many of the SIG Trailsides that can do this. My S&W mod 41 and Hamden High Standard Victors are capable of this as well. The High Standard Supermatic series would be a good choice as well, just make sure it was made in Ct., Hamden preferred. Walther has a new pistol coming out, I think it is called the KP200. The frame is made in Russia, but the whole top, barrel, is made and assembled in Germany. A friend of mine just bought the Benelli Atlanta and it should be a good choice as well. Keep you eyes open for a Unique, Beeman, or Pardini as well.

.22 pistol

I've shot plenty of Bullseye matches with my MKII Target 67/8" Bbl and my S&W Model 41 Bull barrel and I couldn't honestly say which is better. M41 IS cooler and prettier tho. Most Ruger targets in my experience have more than adequate target accuracy; in fact, I think what makes "match" pistols "match", assuming decent basic quality, is ergonomics, trigger, and sights.

The Ruger has been one of my smartest investments. The 'smith at my club in OH did a trigger job and installed a trigger stop and a screw for adjusting sear engagement externally. With Pachmayr grips, it is a match pistol when I'm at a match, and a plinker when pointed at a can.
