which 1911 to get?

Go to gunbroker.com and type in "Sig 1911"...

I've got a full sized Sig Scorpion 1911, I got it cheap, around $700+ brand new I love all the features (night sights too!) and mine has been 100% from day one. I love it! There are all kinds of good looking Sig 1911s now for reasonable prices.

If you don't like the idea of Sig for one reason or another, which I would understand, I'd say to go for the Springfield or the Ruger. I'd have a hard time deciding between the two. But if I had to chose I'd probably find a good deal on the SR1911 and then call it a day.

The Range Officer has a great reputation among some folks on here I really respect...accuracy, good features, standard fit parts etc. I've not shot one but again, the rep. is there.

But all of that notwithstanding, I'd recommend a Ruger SR1911 or the CMD model, sometimes referred to as the Ruger Commander. Both are superb in the examples I personally own. They'll stand up to any of a dozen Colts I've owned over the past 50 years. Both of mine have been 100% reliable for me with over 5000 rounds now between them with any and all factory ammunition.

Another good choice that I have experience with is Sig's 1911 RCS...a Commander length piece with a grip length like the Officers model. It's an alloy framed gun, and carries like the original Colt Commander...about 26 oz. as I recall. MIne is every bit as accurate as the two Rugers mentioned above...sub 2" gps at 25 yds from rest are no trick with any of them. And this Sig comes with their version of tritium night sights...a big plus for any real carry piece in my opinion.

HTH's Rod

Saw a blued Springfield "Loaded" on a forum for a little over $700. I paid $650 ,several yes ago for a stainless model. If you could find that...

Range officer in 9 mm and Bud's gun shop has them for $704 cash price here at www.budsgunshop.com. I have one ordered and awaiting shipping. I suggest 9 mm because of the cost of ammo. It will be much less expensive to shoot verses the 45 acp model and I also have 3 1911's in 45 acp

my local gun shop wants $35 transfer fee.

Buds doesn't have the lifetime warranty as gallery of guns?

if this is going to be my only 1911, should it be 9mm or 45 acp?

1911 in 9mm or .45 ACP???

Gotta go .45 ACP or the gun gods will be DISPLEASED!!!

Besides, if you get a 1911 wouldn't you want it in the caliber that made it so famous? If you really, really want one in 9mm, well that's a jim dandy reason to get another 1911.

Here is a Range Officer on gun broker for $729 + $35 for shipping + $35 for your transfer fee... would be $799 out the door. I'm sure it comes with all the accessories, holster and such.

If you are really going to end up with just one 1911 for the rest of your life, I'd get it in 45 acp, that's what folks think about when they think 1911, the gun was designed for 45 acp and I personally prefer the feel when firing a 1911 in 45 over one in 9mm.

There is a lot to be said for getting one in 9mm, but if I could only have one it would be a 45!

For range officer, gallery of guns give me the best price $760 all fees included.

I wish it came with the combat sights though.

Looking hard at sr1911 now.

I have four 1911s. Two Colt Series 70, a Remington Rand from 1943 that belonged to a cousin, and a Rem 1911R1. I like them all and all are good shooters. For your price range the 1911R1 would fit right in.

First, shopping....have you checked Bud's and Grabagun. With Bud's make sure you understand the fee structure. It is steep.

Second, Colt 1991, Springfield RO and may I suggest Springfield "loaded" parkerized model as all good choices.

Get a 5" steel gun in 45 ACP to start. This is key.

Now, this gun will likely make you go mad. Once you shoot a fine 1911, you will find other guns "accidentally" getting sold off....for more and better 1911's. It is a never ending cycle! Please don't try to home gunsmith....that is like a crack addiction. You will become a troll that only comes out of the basement to shoot and go to work!

Now, you might want to think about just starting with a Les Baer or Dan Wesson Valor...might save you a few buy/sell/buy iterations!!

The 5" range officer is $689 + $5.99 shipping + transfer fee. Seems like you could have that in your hands for ~$720 + 1 week. Yes, grabagun, despite the name is an excellent gun retailer.

$699 for the loaded parkerized with night sights!!

my local gun shop wants $35 transfer fee.

Buds doesn't have the lifetime warranty as gallery of guns?

if this is going to be my only 1911, should it be 9mm or 45 acp?
My local shop also gets $35 transfer fee.
Springfield will fix it free for life
Caliber is your choice

so, among these three which one is the way to go?

SR1911 - stainless steel, a bit cheaper, but comes in a cardboard box? seriously?
Range Officer - blued. nice fit. match-grade barrel. not a fun of the sight
Loaded - blued or stainless. not so great fit (on par with ruger?). also match-grade barrel. has the sight that i want.

All can be had for under or around $800. Find a good cause to spend tax return money.

:)dljor... Nice job choosing 3 very nice and comparable 1911's!

The two Springfields appear to be pakerized and not blued, if that matters to you.

The way I see it the Loaded would be a little ahead as a "combat" pistol with it's ambi safety and night sights (if you get it get it with night sights!)

The RO might be the best for target shooting, competition and general range use.

The Ruger could be considered the best value because of it slightly lower price point while carrying a good reputation as a durable and reliable option, and it has a unique look... just a good all around 1911.

I suspect the Springfields would be equally reliable and durable.

I can't really choose.

I really like the loaded, especially for that price!

I've always wanted the Ruger and I know I would love it.

The implication seems to be that the RO is assembled with a bit more precision, although I don't know this, just sounds like it from the little bits I'm reading.

There is no loosing this battle!

I think based on what I already own, for myself, today, at this very moment, I would chose the RO, just because it's a bit different. Or maybe the Ruger for the styling.

I think for you, being your first 1911, the loaded with night sights could be the way to go.

Good luck buddy... too bad you can't get all 3 and then tell us all which ones your favorite. Maybe you could convince other people you know to buy the two you don't buy and then take all 3 out for a comparison.

I wish I never read this thread. Now I want one of them, and I honestly still don't know which one. Now I'm leaning toward the loaded for myself... what a mess:D

it's weird that for the loaded, only the park'd version comes with night sights, not the stainless model... anyone know why?

I am gonna get one when i get back from a trip in May.

It'll probably be either a Ruger or a loaded. Not sure, for the loaded, which one to get. I like black pistols, but am worried about scratches. I am super anal about this type of things. But I already have a stainless gun (ruger mark iii)...

was gonna get another 22lr. now i decided to get a 1911 instead.
