Which 1911 in 9MM

Between the Colt govt. 9mm and the Springfield Range Officer 9mm, which would be your pick and why. This will be used at the range only, not for carry purposes. Any other guns in this price range you like, feel free to comment on please. Thanks

It is a one horse race and the race isn't close. The Range Officer 9mm beats anyone that comes anywhere near the price.

It's a no lose proposition. Ihave a Colt govt 9mm and I have a springfield emp champion. Love them both. I could probably replace them both with a range officer and be happy. The range officer probably has better sights than the government.

I've always liked Colt 1911s. But I recently got the emp and have been totally impressed. Thinking about a range officer compact myself.

They're both decent guns....shop locally test triggers and pick the one with the best trigger in it.

They both lack features I want in a 1911....checkered front and back strap and a mag well.....but in that price range you won't find better guns for the money in my view.

I've handled some of the ROs and they seem to be very solid guns for the money to me. Before I learned of the Colt Competition 9MM, I would have said RO. I've not handled, and only seen photos and specs for the new Colt Competition 9MM. Since the Colt comes with good sights now, I think I'd have to go with the Colt.....ymmv

BTW, I have found the Kimber Target II 9mms (3) to be reliable, trouble free guns. And for a little more $ I have found the STI Trojan 9MM to be excellent.

Thanks for the info. Maybe they will have both and others to look at a gun show I am going to today.
I don't have much experience with the 1911, as I only have one in 45 cal. a Ruger. I enjoy shooting the 1911 and shoot it better than my other pistols, just thought a 9mm would be good addition to my pistol battery at this time. Thanks for the responses and good shooting to all. Rudy

Springfield range officer 9mm

They are made extremely well and the one I rented at the range a few years ago was an absolute tack driver. Like shoot the eyeballs out of a squirrel at 25yds accurate. Springfields are well made, are usually fitted very well and have a great warranty if you need it. It will be less expensive, there is one for sale at my local gunshop/range for $750 brand new. They are also series 70 so have no drop safety and have the mechanical possibility of a nicer trigger. Their forged parts and known to be very strong

I was in a local shop this morning ..that had one of each.../ trigger in the Colt had a much better trigger...trigger in the Springfield had a lot of slack and some really irritating creep and was breaking up around 6 lbs..( not good ).

But since either one are entry level guns ...they can be cleaned up for around
$ 300 .../ but I still think you'll have to find them locally, and find the one with the best trigger out of the box - because gun to gun, they seem to vary a lot.

I've been shooting a Range Officer for two years. Didn't care for the trigger, my local gunsmith did $50 worth of work on the trigger. It's accurate, reliable, easy to shoot and available at a good price. It shoots as well as my STI Range Master; it's just not quite as pretty. Both are 9mm.

My son has an older RIA 1911 in 9mm that he enjoys very much and that has become his favorite range pistol.

Here's a very good deal on a Bul 9mm single stack. Bul makes Magnum Research 1911's in Isreal. From what I have heard they have Kimber sight cuts and very good triggers. For an added bonus they are series 70 and have front strap checkering. That said I have a Sig traditional match elite in 9mm and it has been a very good gun. It runs like a top. They run about $950 online.

I've got one of those myself, but mine is the more "basic GI" type.

I'm not ready to say it's my "favorite" just yet, but it's headed that way. Really nice shooting gun. Coming from an old revolver guy like me, that's high praise.

I've got a new RIA tactical (now called Rock) in 9mm and I like it very much. It's very accurate and it has performed flawlessly. The new ones do not have the big lettering down the side but a nice small logo on the top rear of the slide. It was a well spent $500 (almost).

I have 2 RIA FS GI 9mms. Both shoot about the same as my other FS 9mms. I bought them expect to take advantage of the sweet 1911 trigger and hope shoot better. Not really!
Many 1911 9mms have reported slide stop not locking the slide back at the last round. Both of mine (with OE MetalForm 9mm mags) have the issue when arrived, simple fix by spreading the mag follower open a bit to engage the slide stop better.
I would say having 1911s in 9mm if you really like 1911s but want to shoot cheaper ammo! Otherwise, stick with the good old 45ACP especially if you reload.

By the way, I got my RIA 9mms $300 after rebate, no complaint!

No wrong choice

The 9mm 1911 is perhaps one of the most enjoyable handguns in the world to shoot. My thoughts on the RO are documented on this forum. Great gun for the money. You will undoubtedly find things you want to change about it. If you know what those things are ahead of time, it might make sense to save up and get a different pistol ( like the STI Lawman ), but it is a good buy and you can customize it over time if you are into that kind of thing.
Mine has had a magwell added and blended, sights have been vigorously filed down so that they aren't so sharp, Dawson front fiber optic, vz grips, and it is about to get front strap checkering and a few cocking serrations added to the front of the slide. Then it will get a new finish. All in all, I'll be in the pistol for well upwards of $1000, but it will be EXACTLY what I want and I was able to shoot it and get to know it while I got it there.

It's a one horse race because the Colt has already crossed the finish line and the Springfield hasn't left the gate yet.

Which 1911 in 9mm?
Easy...Browning HiPower.

A very fine gun (I have many) but not one of the OP's two choices.
