which $1000 battle rifle in .308

With one notable exception, I'm seeing very little
response for the AR10. Is there a reason for
this or does it just not get the blood boiling
like the other two?

Howard

Howard,
if you are thinking or wondering about why no AR10 has been mentioned PRICE, you had better double your budget. Armalite AR10 16inch carbines start at $1300. In a .308 you want more than a 16 inch barrel. So I amagine you are looking at an $1800 rifle. Then if people are claim M1A mags are expensive thry AR10 mags at $110.00 each. Add to that a scope, mounts, bipod and case and you are approach the $3000 mark.

Down boy, back to the M1A and Fal's

Perhaps, but I do know the eagle arms version
is listed as $995 retail. I don't know the
difference b/t it and the "real" armalite version.
You can see it on their site if you don't believe me.
Good point on the mags however, but I haven't
factored that into the decision as yet anyway, or
else the FAL would win immediately. The dsarms
austrian FAL does seem more and more like a steal
however...

The Eagle Arms rifle has a one year limited warranty. The Armalite has a limited lifetime warranty. There is probably a reason for that.

One reason I have not spoken sooner is that a lot of guys do not consider an AR-10 a true battle rifle as it has only seen very limited use in that role. Price is the other reason I kept quiet.

The fact is, I have been very happy with my AR-10A4 carbine. It has performed flawlessly, and I like the fact that it is basically an AR-15 on steroids.

Hi Howard.
The main reason I pushed the FAL in the first place is that I think the general consensus here is that, small preferences aside, the weapons are very similar as far as "battle rifles" go. Souping them up for accuracy is another story.

Given that we have essentially a toss-up, then, the magazine availability/price issue SHOULD be considered.

Oh Geez, The defence for the FAL can post no accuracy, no reliablity or any evidence to support the claims of a superior weapon. I do believe you Honor that in light of this the Mag discussion should be in admissable. Claiming a lesser price are the current date has nothing to do shoulds the Fal be BAN entirely, Hence Ugly Parts Bill escollate to include imported, used Battle Rifles with attached Pistol Grips and in-expencive detachable mags along with a flash hidder, I move that they are BANNED from further discussion.

Sound familiar.....How many times has it happened?
They have to back off a bit with a USGI style weapon as they would not want to DIS them selves.

NO I AM NOT BATF.....HONEST

No evidence??? Try the T48 trials. M14 accepted primarily due to similarity of design to Garand. Gov't felt it would be too difficult to acclimate troops to a pistol grip.

I like both rifles, I just prefer the FAL. It fits me better, and it has proven itself more reliable to me. Of course, the best advice is "buy what YOU like MOST". Don't worry about minor considerations. Get the one you like the looks of most, and like the feel of. THEN you'll be happy.

Oh, Mr. Rex, I'm still waiting to see your resume.....

Dude, I have both (M1A and a good smith-built FAL).

If I had the choice of which to take with me off a sinking ship. . . I might go nuts.

Start planning for both. . . .

Battler.

I'd like to chime-in (for the record) in favor of the VEPR. I was undergoing the same decision-making process when I discovered this beauty. It's only drawbacks have already been defined (high-cap magazine availability), however, I am rolling my dice in hopes that G.W. will let the ban expire and Robinson will begin to import the high-caps (please, Lord.) The rifle is a sweet shooter, with accuracy results very favorable. Just think about it, it's a Kalishnakov design, built on a reinforced receiver, has a chrome-lined barrel, and has a price tag that's easy to explain to the wife. It is also equipped w/ a scope-mount rail located on the side of the receiver (standard Kalishnakov design.) And talk about easy to field strip!

The only modifications that I want to do to this rifle, is the addition of a peep or ghost ring site and a conversion kit to accept the FAL mags (only dreaming.)

All in all, this is a great rifle! It really fits the bill for my needs, and I saved a LOT of money by not getting the others. I'm really looking forward to mastering it as I have my handguns.

I have an AR-10A2 carbine. It won out over the M1A when I was deciding because I like the controls better. The m16/ar-15 motor reflexes were already in place. In the event a fast reload was ever necessary the AR type rifles are hands down the fastest to reload. Not a huge tactical consideration but a tie breaker with all else equal. It has near 600 rounds down range now with no malfunctions and excellent accuracy. It is definitely a keeper and I doubt I would ever sell it.

The M1A was almost purchased and will be next in my collection. The choice here is standard or carbine first?

I am unfamiliar with the FAL’s and would need much convincing that they were superior in any way that is noteworthy to either the M1A or the AR-10.
