Where are you buying actions?

Looking to do a rifle build and am just in the beginning of my searches. Where does a guy go to buy an action/bolt assembly? I'm looking at doing a Savage action/barrel into a rifle chassis system to do some distance shooting/hunting trips.

It seems like I can find stocks/chassis, barrels, triggers but can't seem to find actions/bolts.......

Thanks for the heads up fellas

The easiest way is to simply go down to your local pawn shop and pick up the most forlorn looking Savage there. Get the raggediest looking rifle they've got. Use your negotiating skills, and let them know that you're really doing them a favor to get the rifle off their racks. When you walk out the door with your rifle, you'll have a Savage action, barrel and stock, along with some other goodies. Then, start piecing together your dream rifle.

What sort of chassis stock are you looking at?

I had a custom rifle built by Match Grade Arms and it was much cheaper to buy a complete new rifle than just the action.

Gun show? I picked up a Lee Enfield that need some love for $100 and used it to build on. Worked for me.

$100 gun
$250 26" sporter barrel
$75 stock
$15 bed the stock
$140( after $40 rebate ) Redfield 4-12x40 accu-range scope
$70 Leupold mount and rings
I had a bi-pod and sling
Did the trigger myself.

$655 for a scoped sub moa 30-06 just the way I wanted it.

I am curious why you have your heart set on a Savage action if you aren't planning to use a Savage barrel?

The best feature of a Savage is that barrels can be changed at home with no gunsmith required. Buying a Savage action allows you to get into a high quality match grade barrel cheaper than other brands.

Savage Freak!!!!!

That Savage action, with a properly bedded action and floated barrel makes a fantastic rifle for anything, varmint, target, medium and large game depending on what caliber you choose,,, the best part is that they are so easy to make repeatable, meaning shots frequent the same hole....;)

Working with a Savage action is a good idea. I found a Stevens 200 in .270 at an Academy store for $179 and bought it just for the action. Cost me around $185 to rebarrel it myself with a Shaw heavy magnum barrel to a 6.5x55 swede. Its a nice shooting rifle now. Told some of my shooting buddies at range we are members about the clearance priced Stevens 200s and think between them, maybe 10 or so Stevens were bought just for their actions before they sold out.

Suggestion of buying a junker pawnshop rifle for the action is a good one. I've done that too.

Well I currently own a bone stock Mod 11 non-accutrigger Savage with the factory synthetic stock and whatever Bushnell scope came on it in 308. The gun will shoot at or just under MOA when I'm on my game.

I'm just wanting something a little more "wow" I guess. The thought has crossed my mind to change this up and turn it into a 300 WSM and get a heavy fluted barrel, a rifle chassis, nice trigger, and a nice optic up top and just keep my other parts around "just in case".

I really don't know what I want to do yet. I suppose I'd better start scouring gun shows this fall and keep my eye on gun broker and the like for "worn out" and "ugly" Savages/Stevens to get the actions out of.

Thanks all.
