Where are all the M-1a/ M-14 fans?

where are all the M-1a fans? Sound off! it's one of my favorite rifles, but i don't see much chatter on it, other than the fal crowd telling me how much better the fal is than the M-1a. Design wise, the fal MAY be better, but it feels like your holding a Maul with the heavy end out, and a pistol grip on the handle. Does anyone have happy stories to tell, or am i alone, a lone M-1a gunman in a world of FALs?

Alright, I'll sound off. I LOVE my M1A. Capable of accuracy far beyond my abilities at this time. However I would like an FAL in the collection. I wouldn't trade my M1A for one, but it would be nice to have....

I'll join the chorus. My M1A, a standard model with a synthetic stock, will out-shoot one of my friends' supposedly super accurate hunting rifle. I wouldn't trade it for any other gun and those FAL guys can keep theirs (my safe is full anyway).

I've got both a FAL and a M1A. With thousands of rounds thru both, without a doubt if the SHTF I'd grab the M1A first. Zero reservations. I see no advantage in the FAL (other than cost). The FAL is got more itty-bitty little parts than any battle rifle I've every seen and the front sight arrangement is totally unacceptable IMO for rough use - very easy to knock out of alignment. -- Kernel

Oh geez. I can't wait to post complete pic's. You know rifle with stock.
I will have this SA M1A

Karsten, that stock is SWEET!

Did you do the painting yourself? nice...

Sounding off! I was too busy cleaning my rifle to answer earlier. Just love it!

Another 'satisfied customer' of the M1 A! Great 'fun gun' and it would be my 'first grab' if things really got dicey.

Not an M1A, but...

How about an M14NM? (Don't forget, M1A is the exclusive trademarked designation for the Springfield, Inc. semi-auto version of the M14) This one's going out to a 600-yard tactical match later this weekend...

I'M a fan of the 14.

I was trained with the M-14 in Basic and Advanced Infantry Training and was then issued one during my time with the 24th Infantry Division when they were at Fort Riely. My only complaint was the long marches at Sand Hill at Benning it did get heavy. I qualified expert using it.

The M-14 is an excellent combat rifle in the 7.62 NATO class. The standard issue was very accurate and dependable in harsh environments.

I had friends that used the 14 in Vietnam (early deployments) and it served very well. The only complaints were the ammo weight (basic load) and the weight and length of the rifle. One guy said the "wait a minute vines" would grab the end of barrel without mercy. During my tour in RVN the only 14’s I ever saw were carried by our BN’s snipers and a Combat Engineer group that worked in our area.

My first M1-A was a standard model and it was a great shooter. When I got into High Power Service Rifle shooting I purchased a Super Match. My SM will put the bullet where aimed if it doesn’t it’s the shooters fault not the gun. I like the standard issue better than the SM (for general shooting and carrying) due to the weight, sights and stock size. I really enjoy shooting my M1-A but last year it stopped being fun when I topped it off with a 3x9 scope and every shot was x ring, x ring, x ring off the bench. It will shoot where pointed. When I want to have fun the scope comes off and I just blast away.

Yes the M1-A does cost more than a FAL but if I had the choice as to which type of 7.62 NATO rifle I’d carry it would be the 14.

That being said if I had the choice of any rifle going back into combat my choice would be a M-16A2 but fitted with a 1:11 or 1:12” twist barrel shooting M-193 ball. Any targets over 300 meter and we’ll let the 60’s take care of them.

Just got mine

A stainless "loaded" model with a walnut stock. Ordered a fiberglass stock from Fred's for "custom paintjob" and bedding experimentation.

Shot about 240 rounds through mine so far. 200 rounds Radway Green and 40 rounds Federal Match. What a blast, definitely shoots where it's pointed.

Right now it's newly cleaned, waiting for it's Leatherwood Sporter scope to be mounted (ARMS mount) and taken back to the range.

Woo hoo!

Regards.

You might get lucky at http://www.gunbroker.com with an M1a but then you also have to remember shipping and FFL fees. Also http://www.sarcoinc.com has some (I forgot the name) for $995.00. But really $1140.00 isn't bad at all.

Yes I found a used handgaurd and vented it, filled in the selector cutout with JB Weld and painted the fiberglass stock. I used Tamiya Flat model paint, a few coats of clear, a light coat of some MUD Tique stain and finished with Testors Dull Coat.
I don't know where I got some woodlands/desert sorta mix but it works for the Utah area kinda.
I painted this the other day

That is a great looking cammo job also.

Karsten, is that last photo an SKS that uses the AK mag?

If it is I sure would like to know where you got it.

I have an SKS Sporter carbine that uses the AK mags, the stock is a thumb hole design that just stinks. I have been trying to find a new stock with no luck, they are all the same, made for the standard SKS.

PS: My M14 would be the last gun I would ever part with, well! Maybe one of the last two my BHP belongs with the M14 when they are gone I also will be.

B9,
No it is just a standard SKS with the fixed mag removed and duckbill mags.
As for looking for a new stock look into th ATI Dragonov stock. CTD has then for about $50.00 anf the LOP and wieght is great. I do think the CTD stocks are seconds however, the one I got needed to work which is unlike my one pictured. They take paint well also.

Another thumbs up for the M1A. I have a very early Springfield receiver sporting a stainless Krieger barrel. The stock is a kevlar/graphite composite with an aluminum bedding block the entire length of the receiver. Everything is national match quality, except me!

This is my favorite rifle. Get one!

Hey the reason the M1A guys post less is because we shoot more. Let the FAL guys have fun , but pleeeese the M1A just rocks. I have one with the fiberglass stock so it can go out in bad weather to play. I love my civ version of the m-14. I like ar's and ak's too, but in any real battle I would want my springfield.

Rather than post here, here is a link, A former IDF sniper repatraited to the US and the receiver replaced with a semi springfield receiver and a NM barrel. Although I am sure springfield meant these to be collectibles, I prefer to shoot whatever I own.
