When you target shoot, how far back do you go?

Mouse guns and derringers, 25yds.

All of my other hand guns I go 100yds.

Rifles go out to 120yds, but only because that is where the range stops, I really wish I could find a range that has NO end.
 
CCW practice, 10'-25'

Rifle, 100-300yrds, cause thats all there is. I too would love an endless range, like you Wyoming Shooters have:D
 
Using various types and sizes of paper targets,and shooting unsupported, 25yards is my usual distance for target practice.

no doubt, but different practice for different techniques.

About 30 rounds of my practice session yesterday was drawing my PPS and firing from the hip at a piece of 24 x 24 cardboard at about 3- 5 yards. I had drawn a pair of 4 inch circles on it, one near the bottom the other at the top. I was trying to rapid fire 2 rounds into the bottom circle then a follow up into the top circle.

I also fired another 100 with the PPS using a 2 handed grip at 12 yards, 50 - 75 with the CZ at 12 - 15yards and 150 with my 1911 at 25 yards using conventional targets. As soon as I get a scope for my Blackhawk I want to try some 100 yard plus shots with it.

I could spit 100 yards :eek: I think if I tried, my lungs a kidney and my toung would probably follow the golly out of my gob :barf: :D
 
They let us shoot pistols at the rifle range as long as we predominately shoot rifles. The minimum range is 50 yds. I figure that if I'm doing OK at that range, closer will only be better.

I have a number of neglected pistols that could use some exercise. Next time out I'll post some results.
 
I usually go about 5 to 15 yards for about 20 minutes and then do 20-25 yards for the last 10 minutes at the end when I am warmed up. It also depends on the gun I am using, some are just not meant to be target guns so why force it.

It depends.
For a hunting gun, which means a T/C Contender .30-30, I'll practice at 75 yards usually while sitting on the ground, arms extended across my knees.
For Bullseye shooting - indoors it's 50 feet. Outdoors, it's 25 and 50 yards.
For the .22 Free Pistol, it's 50 yards.
For non-target pistols, I'm at 25 yards, though I'll take the .44 out to 50yds.
For small guns. like a .25 or a .32. it's three to five yards.

With handguns generally 7-25 yards and rifles I usually shoot 25-75 yards. This is with iron sights. I have 20-15 vision and would have problems beyond that with iron sights.
I look at our handguns as self defense tools so most practice with them is within 10 yards and even do a few rounds as close as 3 yards as that would probably be practical self defense range if attacked in my house.
 
When shooting rifles I will shoot anywhere between 25-100 yards generally with most being around 50 yards.

With handguns we generally go through quite a bit of different senarios. We will shoot anywhere from 10" (yes 10 inches) to 25 yards. I think it is important to know what to expect in close range fire and how to use target focused shooting, in other words just pointing and shooting without using the sights. This is the way I was taught in the police academy and I have passed it on to my wife. I believe if either of us were ever caught in a real situation this is how it would be, most of the time I don't think you have time to aim.

One other good exercise is to load snap caps in with live rounds, so when you get a misfire, you can develop muscle memory on clearing it without thinking about it.
 
I shot pistols at 25 yards for years and when my son started shooting with me I always would find one more hole on my targets than I shot, and it was out in the 5 or 6 ring. So I pushed my targets out to 50 yards and was surprised to find that it was doable and reliable and after a month that extra hole started reappearing on my targets reliably. Doing double taps we can go out to 25yds, I find that I have a habit of forgetting to use the front site if I come in closer.

Pistols from about double arms length out to 25 yards, with most time spent between the 15 & 25 yard lines. I have access to an outdoor range where we can set up multiple targets, shoot & move, combos of steel & paper, etc.

Range partners and I have shot other stuff for kicks, like 12 inch plates at 100 yards with pistols.

Carbine work ranges from 25 to 200 yards, with most work done between 50 & 100.

Shotgun is 15 to 25 yards usually.

sorry, but shooting well @ 200 yards with a pistol requires 30-30 eyeballs! lol.

seriously though, for pistols, i usually shoot @ 20 feet, 20 yards, and occasionaly, 50 yards. with the rifles, 50 yards for the 22's, and 100 or 150 for the bigger stuff. i have to find a different place to shoot to get over that distance.
