when can you call them out?

When theyve gotten themselves too deeply buried in a pile of bull poop?

When it comes to firearms on a professional level?

case in point, a coworker of mine. Hes going to be doing the state police academy thing soon. Claims to have 5 "degrees" in combat handguns from an actual college. Yet cant even give a model number for his so called duty handguns

just "38 caliber smith and wesson snub and a ppk"

Miraculously he did the fbi type qualifications for his degrees with a standard semi automatic.

Try not to embarrass him, there's a chance he'll become a real firearms aficionado and he'll look back and appreciate your not calling him out.
Embarrass him now and we may lose yet one more supporter.

Ask to see the degrees and what the course work involved. It won't stop him from talking smack, but it will stop him from talking smack to you.

You have to be careful that you do not become the smug one after a conversation with him. When I was working, I always left people an out. (Well, mostly always!) Because of that, I had others approach me with questions and concerns. They knew I would not embarrass them when they asked questions.

I only "call people out" on gun issues if I have a real good reason for it; otherwise, I let most stuff I hear that is obviously BS pass with no or little comment.

Two times, the same guy approached me to see if I'd buy two firearms: USAS-12 and an UZI (UZI "what", I never found out). On the USAS-12, he asked if I'd pay $800. I asked if it was registered, and he just gave me a blank stare and said he didn't know anything about that. I simply said "not interested". A few months later he approached me asking if I wanted to buy an UZI for X$. He was all over the board, mentioned $800, then $400 - I just told him to stop lying and that I don't want to buy ANY guns from him, EVER! This idiot was beyond being just an ignorant pest - whatever he was up to it was either illegal, fraud or both. No this was not an ATF sting - he was a business acquaintance I had known some time prior to this - didn't like him then either.

When he gets to 7 does he know Kevin Bacon?
Bacon used a Winchester 94 to blow away Graboids in Tremors. I bet if you asked, he would just refer to it as "the rifle," or maybe "a .30-30."

To lots of folks, including professionals, the gun is just "the .38." That doesn't mean they don't know how to use it.

Unless the guy is posing a real danger, it's not my business to give him a hard time.

Let it ride !!!

Happens every day and not personally doing you any harm .... ;)

Never try to teach a pig, how to sing;
It's a waste of your time and annoys the pig. .... ;)

Be Safe !!!

Just leave him be.....We are inundated with "my rifle will put 20 rounds into a half inch at 100 yards in 30 seconds" (actual post on this board now) or "X brand AR15 is the best for close range combat and clearing houses from room to room" (from someone who's learned to do it on video games) kind of posts continuously on these gun forums. In order for many of us to keep getting a good chuckle every day they should be left alone to perpetuate their misinformation....that is unless it is dangerous to someone who just doesn't know better.

Just smile and be polite....they can most likely sense that you know what they are telling you is pure BS. I find it's much more entertaining to watch them flounder.....you can tell by my post count that I keep my trap shut most of the time.

I wouldn't waste your breath. Some people just need to feel superior. I find the best way to handle knuckleheads like that is to invite them to go shooting with you. Let him put his money where his mouth is.

I am not aware of any college offering degrees in combat handguns.

At best, there may be trap and skeet shooting course or two at some schools.

This ^^^
I worked with a boss was an ex USMC cook. I have no disrespect for either the USMC or cooks, but he did tell some whoppers.
My favorite was how he:

"Qualified with an M-1 Garand, even as just a cook, because all marines are riflemen, by putting all 10 rounds into a quarter at 1,000 yards"!

Amazing! a 10-shot M1-Garand & awesome eyesight, seeing a quarter at 1,000 yards.

I like to reply, "Why, THAT is fantastic."

...... as in "having the quality of fantasy". I don't say the second part aloud.......

Just let him feel like a hero in his special little world. When you confront them, the idiocy goes to level 63.

One of my brothers works with a guy that's been telling him for years, about his "matched pair, sequentially numbered, full auto Beretta 92Fs with rotary bolts" ;) and his serial-numberless "special forces gun" that is so super secret it has no markings whatsoever, but his dad was able to keep it when he left the SEALs...

Of course, any time someone asks to actually see said handguns, there is some ridiculously convoluted and unbelievable excuse as to why they're completely inaccessible. (It usually involves loaning them to his father or the SWAT team, because their weaponry wasn't good enough for a special mission; or something involving the firearms being locked in an 'uncrackable' safe that they lost the combination to. )
And the guy is almost 40 years old!

As the wise Pahoo stated :

Happens every day and not personally doing you any harm

Remember he's a BS'er, consider the source and keep on steppin.

FWIW. If he's not careful there's a very good chance his BS personality will come out in his mental eval. that's done by most LE agencies prior to hiring. That will not bode well on his possible up and coming LE career.

Idk about your rifles, but my Tavor is the best for clearing any structures or any long range engagements I may encounter. I have found it to be even more devistating when, mid shot, I fall flat to my stomach seemlessly without losing accuracy. My Call of Duty experience has taught me that much. Maybe you should try it sometime you may learn something!!! [/sarcasm]

In all seriousness though he's well past due for calling his bluff, but that really just depends on if you are the kind of person that does that. Me personally, I just let people keep blabbing about whatever they think is right. If I feel there is too much misinformation being fed to a third non-knowledgeable party I will interject some thoughts or facts as I see fit. Other than that I just hear noise.

I wouldn't call him out, but that's not my style. If it's bothering you that much, call him out by asking a few simple questions. Specifically asking him the name of the places that he got the degrees from would be my first.
