When backup becomes primary...

I thought I’d put a recent discussion/debate out for opinions from the gallery:

SCENARIO:
Your .45, 9mm, .38 SPL (or whatever you normally carry for self defense) is not available.
You only have two weapons to choose from:
Kel-Tec P-32 or a Walther P-22
Both have shown themselves to be very reliable weapons.
Pros for the Kel-Tec – somewhat better hitting power, extreme light weight
Cons for the Kel-Tec – limited mag capacity, best used at nose gun distances (difficult to hold on target at a distance)
Pros for the Walther – easy to put full 10 round capacity on center of mass out to at least 25 yards
Cons for the Walther – it’s a .22…

Decision point:
6 or 7 .32 ACP rounds accurate to maybe 10 yards (or less depending on stress)
OR
10 .22 LR shots accurate to at least 25 yards

I see advantages to both.
I picked the .32, but I’d like to see the discussion…

Using your conditions I would pick the KT. It might be hard to justify a long range self defense. Duty to avoid and all that.

I also would chose a .32 ACP over a .22 LR. Most self defense situations usually happen within 7 yds anyway, and like Wagon said about justification.

My vote is for the KT. I think the 32acp ammo is more reliable and then of course it has a little more punch than the 22. I own a P32 and it goes with me just about everywhere.

Scenario ?? don't know were some of you guy's come up with some of them, I live in a real world "reality" all the time. One gun, for what ever happens, no bugs, no tactical, and not the biggest cannon you can carry. ;)

P-32 without question. I have put over 1,500 rounds of every kind of ammo available with never a FTF or FTE. Accurate enough out to 20' to hit vitals and if 8 rounds of .32acp won't do the job, then 10 rounds of .22 sure will not either.

id use my sig:) i know its not one of the options u gave, but its what i carry most of the time now cause its so small and it has a 1up over the kel tec cause its a .380! it the same size as the keltec though! sigp238:)

I'd pick the Kel-Tec because, IMHO, rimfires aren't reliable enough in a semi-automatic. Now, if I had the choice of one of those nifty 9 or 10 shot .22 revolvers (particularly a .22 Magnum) the choice might be different as pulling the trigger again cures a misfire.

My backup & primary is the same gun .Tried to carry revolvers ,then fullsize & compact autos .Then I said too my self. When was the last gun fight I was in ? So now I only carry a SEECAMP .Always carry something.

dont underestimate those .22's. You take one to the vitals or the head, it'll kill ya. You do not want to stand in front of a .22 to assert your 9mm or 45 dominance, it'll kill ya.

Your .45, 9mm, .38 SPL (or whatever you normally carry for self defense) is not available.

That's why I have 2 .45's, 2 9mm's and 3 .38/.357 wheelguns. With good gunleather for each of 'em.

If all 7 of those are down and out... well, I've got a pair of .44's to reach for.;)

In all seriousness, it just makes more sense to have a redundant copy of your carry gun for when your "primary" needs some gunsmithing. GlockFection aside, every gun goes into the gunsmith sooner or later.

My favored carry gun right now is a CZ-75 full-size. If it were in the smith's right now, I'd have my Colt 1911 on my hip instead.

But, If I were weaponless for some reason and had to choose a .32 or .22 in a nearly-unstocked gun store, I'd choose the .32.

Ive also heard lots of problems on the p22 zink slide.
I have heard people talk about not liking them on principle b/c of the zinc slide, but I have not heard of an actual problem.

My first pistol was a P-22. It was a great pistol. I used it as an HD gun. It wasn't perfect, but with restrike and a little familiarity to take care of a malfunction I felt like I was adequately armed. If I only had one centerfire and sent it to get fixed somewhere or something I wouldn't feel naked with a P22.
