What's YOUR Upland Shotgun?....

Upland

Funny you should ask. Grouse (ruffed) season opens today. This year I am going to start the season with a Model 59 Winchester. I have been shooting it well and, at just under six pounds, I can carry it all day pretty easily.
Some time between now and the end of January I will take out the old Parker for a hike with the setter.
I took my first grouse with a 20 ga. O/U. It didn't get used last year and so it will this year.
I have a fondness for muzzleloaders and there's a Navy Arns 12 ga SXS that is definitely part of the Upland equation this year. Along with that, I have a 16 gauge fowler on order; it's being made for me by Mike Brooks and is due to be in my hands sometime in November.

We only have quail that qualifies as upland, and I haven't hunted quail in 20 years, but my first choice back then was my LC Smith 20 gauge sxs. If I was heading out tomorrow, I'd take my Win. model 12 16 gauge. If I was heading out Monday, lol, I'd take what will be mine tomorrow in trade, an Ithaca mod. 37 20 gauge.

Remington 870 20 gauge special field. Had it since I was a kid. I have shot countless birds as well as rounds of skeet with it.

Well since upland around my area mostly consists of squirrels, it is either my Mossberg 500 or my Franchi Al 48, both in 20 guage. The Franchi was just added to squirrel hunting this year after I had the barrel tapped for screw in choke tubes. I have been shooting modified chokes in both.

Saturday evening the Mossberg and I took 6 tree rats in about 2 hours. Tonight, the Franchi and I took 1 (only had shots at 2 and I rushed one of them).

Now, if I ever decide to dollar up for a quail farm hunt (between agriculture changes in my area and the proliferation of coyotes) our native quail are long gone, it will be the Franchi with the imp cyl choke. It is a sweet pointing and swinging gun.

upland in my house means dove and quail. got out yesterday with the wife and the dogs and put a few quail in the freezer. I'm carrying my trusty 20ga beretta white onyx and my wife shoots a benelli montefeltro silver also in 20ga. dogs are 04 and 06 model german shorthairs.

Well,well,well....

A theory of mine just got confirmed. I expected to see a cross section of action types and gauges. And that's what happened.

There's both kinds of doubles, a smattering of autos of divers makes and vintages and plenty of pumps.. There's new guns, old guns, cheap guns and Parkers, Elsies and Ithacas. There's sub 6 lb Franchis and 7 lb plus Bangamatics. There's about as many 20s as 12s.

IOW, good uplanders are not scarce, nor do they all have 4 figure price tags.

One surprise, no single shots. I expected some.

And no bolt actions. No surprise there.

Let's keep this rolling and see what bobs to the surface.....

Well Dave, it ain't mine but my dad just put in his order for 4 boxes of .410 shells and if he manages to get out this year they'll be fed to his Mossberg bolt action that he's been using for the past 35 years. 1/2oz of #4 makes pretty decent squirrel medicine.

Yes it does, John. You made three firsts in this thread. First 410, first single shot, first B/A.

There's many paths in Shotgunland.

Used a Browning Citori White Lightning, 20ga, 28" for doves in third week of season. Started out with IC/M, and switched to M/IM when we realized the birds were flushing way out there.

Going to take it along for quail, with a Beretta 391 Urika 20ga, 28" as well, in case we find lots of coveys.

L.C. Smith 20ga for squirrel (M/F)
Mossberg 500 20ga also for squirrel (Extended M)
Mossberg 500 12ga for pheasant (Extended LM)
Remington Sp220 SxS 12ga 20" Bbls for early pheasant, quail (IC/LM)

Lots of variety, and some very personal statements.

Some of us have selected specific dedicated shotguns for specific purposes or even quarry.

Others have used the shotgun they have.

It's all good...
